The music theme is classical music. Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Its a famous piece used in many films.

The entire soundtrack is one of the most unique. Been searching for this on CD for years.

Mr. Bartholomew spelled out the purpose of the game, and the reason of forcing Jonathan out: to demonstrate the futility of individual over 'corporate' effort and achievement. The short story the film is based on was more subtle in its message, but more comprehensive. Rollerball was created with the purpose of finding individuals with strength, endurance, courage, intelligence, and leadership ability, and put them in the game until they were disabled or killed, so that they would never represent a threat to the power of the corporations, or lead a rebellion against them.

The announcer was Dick Enberg who was an actual NBC sportscaster. Director/producer Norman Jewison was astonished when businessmen approached him for permission to form an actual rollerball league.

Science Fiction was a WHOLE different genre before George Lucas blew up the Death Star. They were all cautionary tales against progress for its own sake, too much power in too few hands and the loss of individual identity and freedom.
Rollerball was the gladiatorial bread & circuses to keep the masses dumb & distracted. With the side-effect that that all of the players were killed or maimed before they could become individual stars who might inspire people to consider their own individuality.
They needed Jonathan to quit because he was getting too big. They kept changing the rules to try and get him killed on the track. The final game was no penalties, no substitutions no time limit. A fight to the death until there was only one man left standing, regardless how long it took. Since it’s a movie, Jonathan wins in the end.

Love your reactions! Bever change! 🔥🔥🔥
It’s about the individual vs. the state. He was being too individualistic and not being a sheep/NOC, subservient to the state.

This wasn’t just about the character individualism it was also about corporatism and how they control everything and control the narrative, but it could have easily been about governmentism where the government was controlling everything but the writers and the studio chose to go with the corporation angle instead. The sport’s aspect was based on the U.S.’s love of popular sports such as Baseball and American Football along with Basketball and motorcycles and racing. With the use of violence. This was the way the corporations could control the people though distracting them from the real world. This is often seen today in real life by corporations and government entities today but not as over the top of the movie or at least yet.

They didnt choose to go corporation instead of government. They SHOWED what a government is under capitalism. A dictatorship of the bourgeoisie and not a true democracy.

After this reaction, I think you are ready for “Deathrace 2000” (with David Carridine and pre-Rocky Sylvester Stallone).

There is a sport called roller derby. One person tries to complete as many laps, while the other team tries to stop them.

Its a bigger analogy than sports. Its about corporations control over humanity and Jonathan's struggle in the face of impossible odds.

Come on man its not that difficult. The corporations wanted no stars. Its not about individualism but the common corporate good. Thats why they wanted Jonathan E to quit. He proved the individuals actually were more important.

The game was loosely based Roller Derby, but was never a real sport. I heard a promoter asked the director for the rights to the game but the director thought that ran contrary to the message the film was trying to deliver and refused to give the rights.

I understand the basic concept of the movie where corporations need to eliminate individualism and that there are no more countries - just conglomerates who pacify the masses with bread and circuses. But what is the end goal? Is it that the elite (the beautiful people) get to live a life of opulence while the rest have all their basic needs taken care of as long as they remain content and docile as cattle?

In the late 60's or early 70's Roller Derby hit UHF TV as kind of a follow on to the Pro Wrestling shows all over the place but it didn't last more than a couple years. Some studio came up with this flick around then which was probably the 1st James Caan film I ever saw. I think it did OK but wasn't any blockbuster. After that I've probably seen every James Cann movie since so I guess it launched his career.

13:42, the society in this future is one that doesn't tolerate any symbols of individualism. Jonathan has become one, therefore he must go.
    One way or another.

If you're going to critique a movie you shouldn't smoke pot first.
The movie has a very simple plot. Jonathan was so successful at Rollerball that his level of compensation in a society based on corpocracy "the Majors" was putting him at the level of an executive of the Energy Corporation, the most powerful of the six major corporations. And who is the head of the Energy Corporation? None other than, Mr. Barthalamew "The Crocodile". In short, you don't want athletes showin' up at the swanky elitist galas corporate all-night soiree mingling with aristocracy.

Christ, did this movie go over your head. Jonathan needed to retire because he was excelling at a game that no one should excel at, a game that glorifies violence. You almost had it when you remarked about people applauding when the guy got punched in the face at the party.

He’s told to retire because he’s too good…he’s become to much of an individual for the Corporation’s liking.
