I don't think it was that she "didn't care", it was that she felt uncomfortable and was smiling uneasily because she doesn't know what else to do. I do feel like she was in the wrong for using the situationship as an excuse for being with someone else. Being in this situation many times before in my early 20s, the best thing for this guy to do is to completely remove himself from her and start pursuing other girls who will actually want to be with him.
