Thanks for quick reply, eventually it did not work...because seems to be a problem with the SSD. brand new, can store files on it. set up as time.machine. but bootable device dont work. tried a few other methods...but keep getting errors. Formatted 101 times proper way no use😢 so for me dont work, but thats not up to this video and great explanation. im going to.beng my head against a wall 😡
Very helpful video, thank you! I still have one issue. Once you partition your external SSD to Time Machine and ,,PC to Mac (exfat)'' can you add single files to your Time Machine Volume ? I did the same steps like in your video but my Time Machine Volume is now ,,read only'' and can't be changed. Is there a way to fix it ? Thank you
Hi, at 62yrs old, this was an education and a really accurate and well explained lesson in Time Machine. I have one Q, I have an external Hard Drive permanently connected to my Mac which has my photos and Photoshop Actions, Brushes and more. If I back up using Time Machine, will it back up that connected hard drive or will I need to highlight it?
Help I have a new Mac with less storage around 512gb then my previous iMac with 2TB. My external HHD has the time machine backed up but when I got to set up the new Mac I get a message that I don’t have enough storage with 512gb. My question is that I have a new external SSD 4TB drive is there a way to use the external as the main drive for the new Mac. Apple is telling no since the time machine is encrypted.
Thank you for this! I followed the steps that should have made my hard drive appear on my desktop, but it's not there even when I search for it in Finder. I can only view it when i go into Disk Utility. Any advice on how to get it onto my desktop is appreciated! I have the Samsung Portable SSD T7 and a 2022 Macbook pro (with Monterey). Any help is appreciated-thank you!
Hi my M1 Macbook Air is not detecting the SSD after i first formatted it and transferred some files over. The PC can see it but can't do anything to it. Pls help!
Do you have any suggestions for the following - my external SSD drive slows down when copying files to it. It is connected with a thunderbolt cable and very often starts transferring at speeds of 4-500 MB/s. Then it starts to slow down to around 150MB/s. I have used AJA System test and Black Magic Disk Speed Test and they confirm this. Which ever test I use it starts off fast for a while and then slows down. Is it something to do with caching of the SSDs? I am transferring video files most of the time. Any help or suggestions will be gratefully received.
I want to upgrade my 21in Mac to ssd enteral hard drive where are your instruction on how to do it. Your detail instruction are easy to follow. Thanks.
guys. if you followed everything step by step, there might be a problem where the you might have accidently did "Mac OS extended Journaled" for both (Time machine and PC & Mac). The creator accidently formatted both as MacOS Journaled. So you want to have that transferring between Mac and PC, do the ExFAT while partitioning.
So, in this video, the word "format" is used, but in order to "format" one needs to select/click "erase". There is nothing called "format" in the pop-up menus. Still, an excellent tutorial!
depends. That could be because the SSD is broken/damaged. Or it could be the cable or even the port where you are connecting it. If you are using a hub than its best to directly connect to make sure enough power is getting to the ssd so it runs.
@@TechandDesign thanks for the reply! The SSD is brand new, but maybe it could be fabric defected. I’m using the iPad cable so I don’t think it should be an issue and directly connected to the computer
HI CAN SOMEONE ANSWER ME HEHE I HAVE 256 GB INTERNAL SSD AND IM THE SYSTEM AND OTHERS IS CONSUMING MORE STORAGE THAN MY APPS DOES BUYING EXTERNAL SSD WILL HELP ME? This is so helpful. I’m a senior citizen who is just a little computer phobic and this was a wonderful tutorial.
such a genuine and sweet comment, glad it worked out for you!
I appreciate your extensive how-to review. Our computer is a late 2015 iMac with a external 500 GB capacity, of which we have used 17%
I gave up and threw my ssd in a box because my computer wouldn’t recognize it. I had no idea I had to format, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! 🙏🏾
Glad I could help!
This is a brilliantly clear demonstration and explanation of how to install an external drive on a Mac desktop. Thank you so much!
Thank you for such clear explanations of the HD works, internal and external!!

Thanks a million for this video!!!! It was perfect and very helpful!!!
This video helped me a lot, thank you so much!!
Can we use this as a long term solution? Does the external SSD like a T5 heat up if used always to boot up and run as a primary disk for an imac
Thank you, this was very helpful, great you presented this methodically step by step.

Very clear and thorough, thanks 😁
You sir are a LIFESAVER!! Thank you for making this video and explaining it so well.
You are the man my boy!! Appreciate the info, now I'm wishing I would've bought a 4T just for the Partition part lol 💪
Thanks for the video. I can use the same ssd with apps to store files?
Great stuff brother, very well explained, and love the zoom in on icons. Keep it going :)

So when exactly should one format an external SSD to APFS?
Thank you this was great! ExFAT is great for me.
OMG. This instruction makes so much sense. I am desperately trying to backup and save safely so as not to depend on icloud ever again. I can do this.
شكرا لك ، لقد استفدت من هذا المقطع لتهيئة جهازي الجديد 👍

what if I already have things on my external hardrive but they won't open on my Mac
Should do an update to this video bc everything reading for my m1 MBP use APFS for the external drive I’m setting up.

Great video wow nice
Hi! I have tried all these things, it is not working. Any other ideas?
I have a new Lexar NVME 1 tb SSD. I've used CCC to clone from a smaller ssd. The new drive is not bootable and I can't figure out why.

did you ever figure this out?
When using a external SSD for booting, can you still use the internal HDD if needed?

It says "operation failed" after hitting erase. Please help
Nice

Your SSD heats up and slows down because of this.
Yo bro when u coming online now
Thank you!
thanks dude!

No matter which option I try the erase always fails?
I have a question I bought a portable SSDT7 touchDo you do the same set up on the video
👍 same setup
I also bought an SSDT7, but without touch, the set-up should be the same.

Thanks for this tutorial, unfortunately mine failed in the process , prompted to click done, now It can't even be identified as external
never unplug the external hard drive without ejecting it first, or else things like this can happen
So, in this video, the word "format" is used, but in order to "format" one needs to select/click "erase". There is nothing called "format" in the pop-up menus. Still, an excellent tutorial!
This video is great and so useful to me and also for all.
Then why no views
because people never share the video 😢

the iPad cable is the problem. Use the cable that came with the SSD. Cables can transfer more/less electricity

No. Your internal needs space to function properly. Move files/apps to external.
@@FEARisCOLD How about the others?? huhu
Mine says Failed to Erase
My SSD does not show up in Window after partition.
"PC and Window EXFAT" should format into EXFAT, in the video, it was formatted into OS X Extend.
How do I delete a backup. I tried but it won't delete.
you mean a time machine backup or ?
I hope you setup the correct way to start things off just like in this video
I am actually buying the macbook air m1 2020
Just dropping files on a large drive will just create a mess. Make some folders at least.
Wow! You covered several things. I would suggest you only cover one thing at a time.
!
He surely has bad memories with internal it’s like his worst enemy in this video
?
@@TechandDesign just joking about you saying that we don’t press internal
First
Excellent help but too much information and unfocused.
agree
You hunt around the bush a lot.
Too much unnecessary explanations that can makes mistake for nonexpert users.
well, if you watch the start , its fine for the basics
