Same here Whenever I'm down or feeling bad about myself- I watch this scene. It always cheers me up and, stupidly enough, gives me a smile to keep going.
Herbie really teaches us to be kind to one another. He’s adorable little bug. Deep down inside it shows us that anybody can suffer depression and loneliness. I remember watching this as a kid. I didn’t understand what it meant. I see now how very dark it is. People suffer through this everyday. We as a society should we should be there for each other. The good and the bad times.
Though I doubt the fall would have really "killed" him, he survived being thrown overboard a cruise ship and left in salt water for a long time, why he was in such good shape afterwards be fought a bull then smashed apart a crappy Cessna all while driving countless miles through South America, little bugger's a tank!
Herbie felt like he was worthless. He knew where the bridge was. He made a conscious choice to jump. Suddenly, this old Disney movie is a lot more deep than I thought!
2:17 - You know, saying that the car just saved Jim's life is actually pretty funny. The way the cop says it can sound like Jim was trying to jump off the bridge, and Herbie was trying to rescue him. The irony makes gives this dramatic scene some much needed relief.
Well, in a way, you are both right and wrong. On one hand, it was Herbie, who was trying to commit suicide while Jim was trying to stop him, and talk him out of it. It took Jim slipping and hanging onto his bumper for dear life, knowing that he was sorry for taking him for granted, (not to mention, Jim saying "I can't hang on much longer!") For Herbie to get out of committing suicide, reversing back onto the bridge, and, in turn, saving Jim's life as well.
I don't think so, because even with his headlights blown out (theoretically his eyes) he could still drive as if nothing had happened but he had been crashing all the time. I think he also used the rearview mirrors and to look behind to be able to guide himself where he was going.
Just a thought, I wonder if the writers were at all influenced by The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. We think of Herbie as being a car with a life of its own but, when watching this scene back now as an adult, I wonder if Herbie was a human who became trapped in a car and that's all part of the depression. Almost certainly not, and I am over-thinking this. Btw, I know it's all fictional lol!
Herbie was willing to off himself for feeling betrayed and worthless... but he wasn't willing to take Jim, the one who made him feel that way, out in the process. He still cared about Jim.😢
This scene always upset and depressed me as a kid. Thinking that Herbie put all his heart and effort into making Jim a proud and successful race driver, only to be betrayed because Jim couldn’t bring himself to admit the truth that Herbie was the real racer and he was a fraud. Or in his own words from an earlier scene “only half a man” 😢
This is why the Herbie sequels after were simply just not good imo. I mean this is what brought herbie to life for me. He did everything he could to make his owner happy, and Despite his best efforts, Jim couldn’t see that he was alive. Heartbroken, depressed, and in an act of desperation, Herb decides life is not worth living anymore. All the films after were just made for cheap laughs. Except the 97 movie; that one got deep
And that's who Herbie is. Even if he felt Jim didn't want him, even if he felt like everyone just wanted him gone or dead, he still cared and saved the one who stood up for him once...
Does not stop peaple committing suicide you can take pills from a shoo and do the same job drug overnight is another way even if they ban selling cheap drugs in shops make a illness and you can kill yourself on the medication the NHS gives you
Sadly nowadays no one would even dare attempt this kind of storytelling in a family movie. As I said film making has lost its edge by dumbing things down and softening them.
I love this scene it was always really dark but I find it hard to take seriously when Jim is hanging from herbies bumper over a massive drop and he’s speaking so casually lol
Fun fact; this was Dean Jones' first scene on the film, so he wasnt sure how the scenes were going to go or how they'd look, he was just trying his best going in blind. Compare it to the scene where Herbie nearly gets crushed in 'Herbie the Matchmaker' here on RUclips and you can see how much he settled into and embraced the role. :)
If only Disney put as much time and effort into their side live-action projects such as this. That's not to say Pirates of the Caribbean series isn't good though. It is and Johnny Depp is excellent but things like The Love Bug/Herbie series just had a cartoon-in-live action innocence about it.
