Thank you for stopping by John and Maria's! I've been dying to see this video uploaded because I was that dish boy near the back door (I'm surprised I made the cut LOL!)
Pres has been to like 5 CT pizza places and he summed them up faster than I ever did and I've lived in CT my entire life. If the place has Foxon Park you know it's legit pizza
What the name of the really famous in in CT? Not sure where exaclty. is it pepes is that the one? May be spelled incorrectly. Was in CT for 4 years and never tried it gotta go back. Is it pepes? Something like that
Being from CT I can vouch for the sodas. Foxon Park, Hosmer Mountain and Avery’s are all legendary around here and their sodas are sold in only the best local restaurants.
it's amazing how one small area in CT just crushes pizza. I've been to many of these places, every one is so damn good. My favorite is sally's but the dark horse in the New Haven area is Olde World in Hamden.
You're right about Olde World, that place is sick! A guy that used to work at Modern opened up Olde World, I used to go there every once in a while but it was a 30 minute drive. They can legit go toe to toe with with Pepe's and Modern. It's strange how under the radar Olde World is, that place is Wooster St. quality, they don't get the buzz they deserve.
This was the first Barstool review I ever saw, had never heard of them before that. The review got some buzz in the local paper so I checked it out. John & Maria's used to be one of my "go to" places back in the day. Don't get me wrong, it's a quality pizza, but Pres. scored this 8.5, which is what he gave Pepe's. Sorry, but that's just wrong. I don't think I've ever heard any local say John & Maria's is as good as Pepe's. After watching him review pies for five years now(this was the first review I ever saw him do), I'm shocked he gave it such a high score. Not because it's not an excellent pie, it is, but it was so soupy and "molten", which he usually hates. For whatever reason, the taste of this pie just hit him the right way.
Back when I was a kid, a soupy center was typical for most central CT pizzerias. Some of the best tasting pizza I ever had had a somewhat soupy center. Old folks remember the now defunct Baccos in Waterbury (1930s through the late 80s or so).
I imagine the drink company getting excited about a boost from this video, until he says "its goo.. its not good it just means you have good pizza" amazing
There are so many good pizza places in CT that I honestly cannot keep track of them all. As a kid, we used to eat at a restaurant called Little Rendezvous (Okish) in Meriden CT and Amore Apizza (pretty good) in Wallingford. The good pizza places stops once you get closer to Hartford (and when I say good I mean New Haven charred). Yes, it is true that if you see Foxon Park cola sold at a pizza restaurant it tends to be good pizza. I'm not a soda drinker, but it also happens to be one of my favorite sodas. (Hate the birth beer).
@@lethrneck4 Abate's admittedly catches some overflow when Sally's and Modern are packed, but I've been there several times and wouldn't go if it wasn't worth it. Pizza is excellent although not quite at Modern (1) and Sally's (2). It's also a full restaurant as well. I'd also be interested in Pres' review of Abate's.
Foxon Park is an East Haven soda. They're only like 5 minutes from John and Maria's. Their cream soda is great, but I love their kola too. Never tried the diet one you had though.
8.5 - champions league score. Hope John & Maria know they need to deliver that every slice now on, they've been given the biggest spotlight in the game.
I visited Connecticut for 8 years straight every weekend from nyc and we went all over that state … the entire time I had zero clue there was ANY good pizza out there… crazy

I grew up in Staven and when I was visiting people from Naugatuck, they said “Let’s get a pizza.” We all chipped in, gave our money to Andy, and he came back with my first non New Haven style pizza. At my young age, I never had any other pizza. It was from Dominos and fucking cardboard doughy garbage. We were lucky to have such great pizza for sure in New Haven area.
You should try Illianos pizza in East Lyme, Connecticut! Very very similar to John and Marias except not as messy and the slices are bigger! Definitely a 8.1-8.4
Only discovered this channel about a month ago so I am late to the party to give my two cents. NY has Boylan soda. The black cherry, creme and orange are so damn good.
Foxon Park is the best thing with Apizza in New Haven. My Dad likes the orange, I like the root beer, but when it comes down to the clam pie, white or red, Birch Beer for the win. Actual beer is for after, of course.
Bro thats literally down the street from my house and i had no idea he went there! They are good but used to be alot better pre-renovation and switching of the ovens.
CT food in general is the best anywhere in the country. Idk what it is, but it’s not just me. A bunch of local new haven restaurants including Pepe’s moved into Boston and are absolutely demolishing the locals restaurant as
i'd contend that the plethora of farm to table restaurants in vermont that source all their food from within 5 miles have connecticut beat by a long shot. but you guys got the pizza.
