  • Here is a quick video about the 1970-77 Chrysler 3.6hp air cooled outboard. This was the final model in the line that dated back to the 1952 Elgin 2hp. These are fine little motors, tops in the low-priced motors from that period. Be sure to check out my OddJob Motors website for the complete discussion of these little motors under the Elgin tab.

I have to admit that i learned something new with this motor, i did not know that it had a water pump until Tom called me about the water pump you were looking for,and i had to look it up in the parts book because i did not believe that it had one.

Ben, glad it added to your knowledge, your videos have helped me many times! Tom was great helping me find that impeller, I was having no luck in these parts. You are lucky to have a dealership near you that will help with the older Chryslers, our guys don't want to even know they were made. If the fall weather remains decent and the lakes don't freeze, I'll try to run it in the next week or so.

My Elgin 3.5 is water cooled also. It has no cooling fins anywhere on the motor. The head is flat

I have a 1947-48 Elgin 3 1/2 hp with recoil. The numbers dating it are on the gas tank and so is the recoil

I bought a 3.6 not knowing anytihning about it. I was told it runs well but may need some carb. work.
I regret not being mechanically inclined.

"Swinger", that's a riot Art! At least they didn't name it the "Aspen". I wonder how you get the shroud off with that recoil in the way...I guess you will get many questions answered now that you have reconnected with the Elgin folks in heaven....

Great video, I can use some help with my 3.6 Chrysler. It runs for about 5 minutes in boat, then dies. I am suspecting the water impeller(which I did not know it had). The year apparently is 1971(after limited info), Model#32HB and ser#5970...I cannot find an impeller or other info. Got any ideas who to contact??? Thanks, Jeff in Northern Ohio

The impeller may be available through your local Mercury dealer - if they are willing to look for it. The part # is F390065. Your problem sounds fuel related - better check to be sure everything is ethanol compatible, new fuel line, float needle and that the air vent in the cap works. Those tanks are cruddy steel, be sure it is clean and not filling up your bowl with muck.

Thank you so much, got it for the boy because he likes to bass fish at Resthaven Wildlife Area in Castalia, Ohio. Will try that. We have run it out of water but thought being air-cooled it wouldn't hurt it. I used to work on boats but did not know much about this one..Thanks again and God bless....

i believe mine is a 1970 and i just got it and know nothing about it like if its been kept up well or not so im trying to see if anything is visibly wrong and i cant figure out the lower unit. like how to get it off for starters. just to get to the impeller. and also i see on most outboards there is the drain and fill screws on the lower unit for the gear oil... well i have one screw on the bottom below the bullet that im assuming is a drain screw but it doesn't look like there is any fill screw.. i am truly confused now any help would be hugely appreciated!!

One fastener is directly above the prop on the underside of the anti-cavitation plate. The other is behind the clip on the leading edge just above the anti-cavitation plate. When you have the L/U off you can simply drain and refill slowly through the single screw.
Good luck finding an impeller - they have become very scarce and quite dear when they do turn up.
Heed my warnings about the fuel/oil mix - 16:1 using aircooled 2-stroke oil is the only way to go. Don't listen to the so-called experts.

I found the screws and found out the bullet was bone dry. But the pinion and ring gear are still in good condition. So I out gear oil and I def. Took your advice and got enough oil to make the 16 to 1 mix. Last question, is I got the screws off to make the lower u it come off... and it was lose and dangeling. But it wouldn't cone off the leg. There was 1 screw right above the prop. Right below the fin. And I took it out but it was somehow connected at the "back" of the leg. So I couldn't get to the impeller or water pump witch is right above where the lower unit was dangeling.

Take off the flywheel and clean the points - get a new plug too. You know that most of the R/R is covered on my OddJobMotors.com website on the Elgin outboard page.
