- Foreman and Wilms go bush for 13 days in a canoe on a wild river with a Jack Russell Terrier. Deep in the woods of Maine the Allagash flows north for 100 miles through large lakes, towering trees and beautiful scenery, a perfect setting for a magnificent adventure.

At 55 years young I paddled the Allagash solo, however I paddled to Locke dam on Chamberlain and portages there. Then paddled eagle to the trains and on to pump handle site . I left mud brook site at 5 am and was at pump handle at 3 pm. The trick to catching trout in late September is deep water . What you were catching have two names , chubs, fall fish. Best trip I have ever done. Looking forward to the rest of this series.

I remember pulling out at this campsite when I was 13. We put all leftovers together and made absurd sandwiches. Bacon peanut butter snicker and jelly with mac and cheese. So awesome.

This brings back memories. I canoed this in 1975. We did it the beginning of June. The water was cold. We put in at Chamberlain Lake. It inspired to move here 4 years later.

I've always enjoyed Mr. Foremans unique narration delivery. He just has a way with words. But hey, us Canadians have a way with words as well you know. Like, "stay where you're at and I'll come where you to". Just one of many. Always enjoy your videos folks. Always look forward to the new ones.
Greetings there. That trip was the closest I've come to Canada so far. looking forward to crossing the border hopefully in a year or two. In addition to the Yukon river there appear to be plenty of great adventuring up your way. I'm guessing I might need some wooly socks!

Trout are a bit harder to find up here in Maine once july and after comes along. Deep water and smaller spring fed brooks and tributaries from bigger rivers are the key to finding them. Great series. The fish you were catching are called chubs or fallfish
I was thinking the trout might have been down deep. Now the chubs, it seems that name is a generic term for a number of species in the carp family not native to the USA and the name fallfish is a US native. I've had mixed feedback on the status of the fish I was catching in Maine but I think they were native fish best released back to the wild. Is that the case or are they invasive?
@@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures Lifelong Mainer here. Indeed we call them fallfish up here. They're actually a type of minnow in the 'chub' family. They are native, but a pain in the ass for trout fisherman like myself, lol.

so many childhood memories of doing this trip year after year, we haven't gone in ten years since our grandparents health declined, but maybe one day we'll do it all again! it's quite something to see someone else starting at the same spot! and even camping in the same places that hardly look changed. those spikes of land at 11:35 are a popular place for bears to poop.

I was on the river at the same time just ahead of you and that was an unusual warm week for that part of Maine. In fact much too warm for me and I did not use any of my warm clothing. We were thinking of cancelling our trip since the water level on the river was so low but at the last minute decided to give it a try. But, this time we cut off the last portion of the trip due to the low water level and came out at Michaud Farm. I would have been on the river this week but again it is low, we decided to cancel since it was even lower than last year. Nice job putting the video together.
It’s a spectacular trip down that river, the fall colours and the lack of people in the off season made all the canoe dragging worth it. We were out for 13 days and had a few big storms that bought the river up a little though it was still a bit tough and the bottom of the canoe took a hammering. Did you end up going for a swim in chase rapids? We certainly did.
Let me knock on wood as I reply............no, I did not end up on any unplanned swim.......just luck. On other trips the rangers will not allow anyone to shoot Chase Rapids since the water level is high and the rapids are too dangerous. Making the trip with a low water level has its own challenges of trying to navigate to the deepest water which many times requires standing in the canoe for a better view of the river flow. Standing and using a pole rather than a paddle can be fun and allows you to stretch your legs.
We have some rain in the forecast and I am hoping we can still do the trip in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to the next two videos in the series.

The Disco is doing well but the roof rack setup needs some re planning for a canoe on the roof so we took summers old car from long before we even met.. We've finished filming the series 1 intro and have almost now stripped it back to the chassis. we were planning on releasing that video and subsequent restoration videos after the Allagash series

I believe this fish is a chub or also called a fallfish. It seems they are native to the region but I still have more research to do to be sure.

The hat is an Aussie brand called 'Akubra'. The model I have is the 'Coober Pedy' with a little Opal and Wilms wears the 'Coolabah' with a Croc skin band. 'Hats by the hundred' was a website that may stock them. Covid shook things up a bit but hopefully things have returned to normal. They do shrink so if you get one make sure its the next size up for what you would normally wear. It'll be loose and floppy at first and gradually become a good fit.

Keep an eagle eye out for those Canadillions, they're a canny lot. There may be thousands of them lurking about over there, just awaiting opportune moments to take advantage of your love for most-beautious places and things. They could entrap you, as those sweet singing mermaids of olde; from the deep that Johny Depp played amongst on the silver,,,, er, video on the TV.
Anticipation builds within my breast as I await what will come nest, er, next. (blush).

Greetings Maurice. We filmed this video 3 or 4 years ago and at the time I don't recall a need for permits for a drone but things change quickly, especially with the popularity of drones. I just don't know the current conditions so you might just have to ask when you get there. Hope you have an awesome trip!

Chub is the fish
I’m considering a bent shaft paddle, is the side you use optional? I’ve never seen anyone use it like a “scoop”.
Greetings Kevin, In that film Wilms was using the paddle the wrong way round by my advice, which was incorrect of course. We hadn't encountered this type of paddle before and I just made assumptions over research which always get one in trouble. It's a trend that didn't catch on and now Wilms uses it the right way round. I can't imagine they are too good for the guy at the back however and I continue to use the traditional type.

I have wondered, how do you like the US verses Aus? I have always had a dream to move to AU but i would need to find work there. If i could find work in AU i would make the move.... But was wondering your thoughts on America? Is it better living in AU or here? Thanks just was wondering.
Greetings Km4fsi. In regards to living in one place or the other I'd loosely say "same, same but different." Both places are really great, population is a noticeable difference and Australia has some great long distance off roading. The US is blessed with so many incredible places and the only drawback being in the peak season the press of people so we get around that by putting up with less desirable conditions and go off season. Ultimately, in regards to your question I don't think you lose either way in either decision. You'd go from one good place to another or back again.
Ahh the strange land of Canadia, home to some of the most beautiful women on the planet. BTW what happened to the Landrovers? Repair bills too much? I'm also seeing some very intensive obedience training for Cricket on the cards! :)
The discos roof racks weren't suitable to carry the canoe across the US so we took Summers wagon. Otherwise the disco is doing well and gearing up for a October expedition, 4x4 and canoe trip in Utah which could be a good one. The old series 1 is now almost stripped to the chassis and under restoration. It's in surprisingly good shape so hoping the repair bills won't be too high. I'm getting very good at drilling out rusty bolts.
@@ForemanAndWilmsAdventures Uncle Arthur used to soften them up with an oxy torch. He used to own a Caltex garage somewhere around Inglewood.
