    Incredible! I wouldn't have thought that certain foam could rust the armature in an animation puppet. Love seeing how kitbashed these creations are too!

    • @MLTharme
      @MLTharme Год назад +2

      It's one of those unspoken truths about stopmotion, same with the tensioning of joints, which I'm really glad Adam brought up. People just assume because it's steel joints that it's not prone to maintenance or breakage, it's far from the truth.

    • @MLTharme
      @MLTharme Год назад

      What was your method of deburring back then? Was it a sand tumbler or would that have been more for the finishing? 🤔

    • @rc4688
      @rc4688 Год назад +1

      @@MLTharme I don't know the names of the tools. First I used fine grit sand paper on the flat surfaces to remove the biggest burs on the edges. Then a short triangular knife on the edges. An "s" shaped rod with a sharp edge for curved edges. A drill bit (used by hand, not a power drill) to smooth the edges of the screw holes. Then a rock tumbler for polishing.

    This was a brilliant episode, i love seeing people gush over the armature as much as they do over the finished puppet. For those who are asking if they can buy armatures, i work for a company in the UK called Animation Toolkit, and we make kits and custom fabricated armatures for hobbiests and industry folk alike, everything from generic humans, to Tippett Velociraptors, and even the odd Harryhausen and O'Brien gems too.

    If you want an internal structure, use wool (genuine, sheep's wool). Not packed tightly, it's pliable, it retains its shape well.
    For a cored out figure, no internals, just put some polystyrene and melt it down before painting with acetone injected via syringe.

    Couch cushion foam? I thought that these things had silicone or similar material put into an injection mold with the armature?

    • @MLTharme
      @MLTharme Год назад

      That's when you have a budget, the method they are talking about here is called the "build-up process" which goes back all the way to 1925s The Lost World and 1933s King Kong. Marcel Delgado was a master of this method of puppet making and it's still practiced today by many hobbiest and industry professionals for it's quick and gritty natural looks, rather than the time consuming sculpting, casting and injecting of silicone or even foam latex.
