- The massive Cyclone Racer roller coaster in Long Beach, CA., was used in a number of Hollywood movies and TV shows during it's lifespan between 1930 to 1968.
This entertaining chase scene was the climax of the 1936 movie "Strike Me Pink". It is said that 2 stuntmen suffered broken legs during the filming of this scene.
Lot's of great footage of this once popular coaster, and some great background scenery as well.
I used to ride the Cyclone Racer as a teen until it was demolished after Labor Day in 1968. I ditched school that day and watched it being demolished. It was a sad day.
In 1967 I rode the Cyclone Racer twice in one night. It's the only roller coaster ride I've ever been on. I'll never forget it or the sound the wheels made on the tracks. Incredible ride!
this clip is so cool, just everything about it. I am no SPX person, but for 1930's this is damn awesome. Love the roller coaster and cyclone too! Just a gem this is for sure!
Hi, There is a movie that was made in the 1950s. The name of the movie is ' Gorilla At Large '. The movie was basically filmed at the Long Beach Pike. They filmed a scene right inside the Craze Maze which is the house of mirrors. The movie has great film footage of the Cyclone Racer! You'll also see a short film clip of laughing Sal and laughing Sam on the Laff In The Dark fun house!
The actors are,
: Cameron Mitchell
: Anne Bancroft
: Lee J Cobb
: Raymond Burr
: Charlotte Austin
I am glad people had fun, for me this only brings tears as my mom died on the cyclone in 1978, her name was Sandra Magana, her maiden was Sandra Motley. not alot of people knew she had a son as I was born when she was very young. I am Ken Motley, I love you mom, I miss you, I wish I could find the rest of the family, my grandfather, James William Motley, my Uncle Rich Larmen and my dad, John Adrian, where is the rest of my family?
This is the original Cyclone Racer in the film which was demolished in 1968. The new one took it's place soon thereafter. It was a smaller version.
Plenty of tricky camera work there but also lots of great stunts. Nice clip.
Thank you swampfoxer for this find. I really hope the ride could be rebuilt someday. Moreys or something would be idea and in its WICKED not tamed state.
There is one shot in the movie Its a mad mad mad mad world of Cyclone Racer, You basically have to pause the movie but its near the end in the chase scene and shown from a distance. Beautifull.
very entertaining clip!
That was great!
Unbelievable action sequence!
Really good stunts. You won't find any park willing to run one car on a track followed by the rest of the train - even if it's filled with dummies or one hanging off the back end - impressive.
Yes, you are correct. Jeanne Eagles came out in 1957 and there are some really good Cyclone Racer shots in that movie. Some POV as well.
Wow that's awesome!
The anti-rollback must be tough on the old backside !
I remember the Cyclone Racer. That's Downtown L.B. in the background.
My dad told me so many stories of riding this ride when he was in the navy. He said several people died on it.
XDDD Okay, that is hysterical!
I am using the Cyclone Racer in "The Dead Fisherman - Honeymoon for 3" not surprisingly set in San Pedro- Long Beach, L.A. in 1937. It's the sequel to Frisco The Dead Client.
Lol early proto type of X- multi dimensional coaster at 3:45
Corny, but I like it. That is pure slapstick comedy.
Wow.
MORE!!!! somebody download the whole thing!!!
I sometimes wonder if that fire never happened at this park, and Colossus at magic mountain was still built then turned into twisted colossus which is good okay, would this cyclone racer still be at it's place all classic wooden dueler, or be rmced?
Well who knows? And wish California still had this racing coaster!
Just for fun, in a old Roller coaster tycoon scenario of mine I edited which is Woodworm Park, I built a nice recreational cyclone racer coaster which turned out very nice, but had to make it much less taller cause of bad stats!
How many movies and tv shows this ride was in ?
Cute footage of the coaster, but it is easy to tell that most of the footage was shot on a soundstage. Granted, you are not supposed to take the chase seriously. It is escapist entertainment, but let's face it...Eddie Cantor would have been killed when the train came up behind him and he fell backwards into the front seat.
More likely he would have gotten run over
