. This is fantasy-land. I don't think it's wise or even possible to simply choose a country that you believe will give you a fast track to EU citizenship. I have moved twice from UK to Spain and then toFrance. I know how it works in these cases. You have to choose a country were you want to actually set up home. Is a resident of the US or anywhere else going to move to 'Latin America' for two years' on the basis that this will, possibly, allow then to then move to Spain? Will that Latin American country allow this person to do that? Will this country not have its own requirements for being there? It certainly will. No country allows people to rock up and stay, on a whim. There are dues to pay, everywhere.
@@christophernation4793 I'm also from uk and would love some advice on your Spain and France travels. Is it possible to email you or do you have any other social media as YT does not allow dms now 🤦
Portugal is the quickest but you'll need a bank account in Portugal. Depending on which Embassy/Consulate you apply through, some say a 11,000 while others say 20,000 in savings.
I recently obtained EU citizenship because my grandfather was Spanish and Spain’s specific “historic memory” law applied, but I was asked to renounce my US citizenship which was ludicrous because I am a naturalized American and very much value my US citizenship. But the consular official assured me it was just a formality, and he was right, so I’m now a Spanish and EU citizen but remain an American.
Hi, I am Cuban-American and I applied for my Spanish citizenship por la ley de memoria democrática. I’ve been waiting for more than a year. Can you tell me how long took you to receive your Spanish citizenship and what is your country of origin?
If your a UK citizen check if you have any Parents or Grandparents theat where born in the Republic of Ireland. Many do. Then you can obtain an Irish passport and therefore the right to travel, live and work anywhere in the EU.
Okay, so a lot of comments here seem to be misinformed about Spanish dual citizenship for US citizens. Yes they require you to “renounce” US citizenship when you swear in. As far as the US is concerned though you are still a US citizen and will be so until you renounce to the US and pay your (expensive) fees. Even though you say you renounce to the Spanish official, they cannot control if you officially renounce to the US at a later date. Honestly, I doubt they even care…

I was hoping to simply fill out an online form and job done. Not find a country, apply for residency, re-apply after years, learn the language and get citizenship. Barking mad. Although I've heard if you go to Dover you can get a cheap boat, one careful owner, to go across the channel in to the continent. It's never busy as most of the boat traffic is coming the other way.
Portugal have a backlog of 3 years on applications for citizenship. After 5 years it still can take another 3 years for your application to be processed.... Application Vortex with no improvements...
No mention of Luxembourg here, in my opinion clearly the easiest way to EU citizenship by natualisation. The requirements are basically five years of residency (shorter if you are married to a local), a very basic language test of Luxembourgish (in spite of the fact that French is the language you actually need in daily life here), and participation in a compulsory course on history, law etc. without an exam (i.e. just attendance required). There used to be a programme for people with Luxembourgish ancestry, but I think this may have been discontinued.
You need millions of euros to invest to get residence in Luxembourg, or you need a high passive income generated from another EU country to obtain residence in Luxembourg. It is one of the more difficult countries to obtain residence as a third-party citizen, ie non-eu citizen.
@@jeremyleonbarlow I agree that the investment option is close to unavailable. But residency based on employment is definitely possible, even if EU nationals have priority.
Confused about Schengen travel while living in France on a Visa de Long Séjour Visiteur. Can I visit other Schengen countries while on this visa & residing in France even though I will have used my 90 days out of 180 days residing in France?
I live in France with a Carte de Séjour. I understand that this allows me to be present in France while the CdS is valid without using up days from the 90/180. Otherwise put: I am limited to 90/180 in (the Schengen area excluding France) and I can be in France as much as I want.
Please clarify! Right about 4:29 minutes into the video you stated that after renewing the French Visa Long-Séjour - Titre de Séjour (VLS-TS ) 5 times (5 yrs) someone can apply for: "Either the French Permanent Residency OR French citizenship." Is that correct?
You could apply for both because they are completely different procedures. The sensible thing to do would be to apply for a Carte de Sejour - residency - and then apply for citizenship. I will be eligible to extend my 5 year Withdrawal Agreement FR CdS in 2026. Most likely it will be extended for 10 years. As a seperate procedure I could apply for citizenship - best done after confirmation of continued residency.
FT traveler (almost 10 years out of the US, greetings from Madrid, 3 months in South Korea starting in a week). Early retiree. Ok, so anyone know about the Northern European countries as they don't seem to have a path, that I have found, for a retiree and partner. I know Ireland might work, but I would much rather go to any of the Nordic countries, Germany or Switzerland. Also note - barely can speak English well (my partner speaks 5 languages), so there is no way I am learning another language. Ideas within my parameters?
Sweden, Norway and Iceland give you free classes on the language. Norway has done away with their language requirement and you have to live there 6-ish years (I don’t remember exactly), but Sweden is easier to get into and it’s 5 years. Ireland has the shortest time, only 3 years, but Iceland will let you vote at 3 years into their 5 year process. Not sure about Denmark or Finland-I think they’re more like 8-10 years. Keep in mind the joke is: there is one Scandinavian language; the Swedes can’t write it and the Danes can’t speak it. You’d have to research the Baltics, and I have no idea about Germany because they’ve changed it several times in the last 5-8 years. Also, Portugal has changed quite a few things that are mentioned here in this video. Hope that helps! Oh, and Ireland is the only country that will give citizenship if your ancestor is farther back than great-great-grandparent; it’s called citizenship by affinity. I did not see a language requirement on any of the immigration attorneys’ websites that I came across last week.

I turned away from Spain's 10-year citizenship plan as it states that renouncing the citizenship of your home country is a requirement to obtain Spanish citizenship. Plenty of other EU countries permit dual citizenship through naturalization, so maybe Spain will drop their requirement.
I doubt that will happen any time soon. Meanwhile, even if you have renounced your US citizenship as far as Spain is concerned, the US still considers you a citizen until you formally go through the (expensive) process in the US to do so.
@@lindav1403 fair enough, but since Portugal allows dual citizenship and requires half as much time for naturalization, they easily come out ahead of Spain. Add to it that there's no illusion of citizenship renunciation that Spain could use against those who don't follow through with the process (if they felt the need).
@jamesuhl3995 - James, have you researched the tax brackets of Spain and Portugal? That could be a defining factor since Portugal got rid of their 10 year tax break.
@charlielipthratt7291, great point - and yes I have. I'll be covering my expenses from savings (untaxed, except interest) and a $1000/mo pension to keep my taxable income in Portugal's 18% scale. Spain was going to hit my entire portfolio with a wealth tax, which further helped steer me away.
I have question. I think I would have an easy time getting a Euro 0:27 passport through Germany. I was born there, as was every family member on my mother’s side. I resided there for 15 months & then we came to America. My dad was stationed in Frankfurt at the USAF base, which makes me a naturalized citizen. Getting a Euro passport through Germany should be easy, shouldn’t it?
@ I am not considered a German citizen because, right after WWII, anyone who came from Germany to US to be a citizen had to renounce their German citizenship. Since my father was an American citizen in the US Air Force stationed in Germany, I became a naturalized US citizen. My mom also became a US citizen & was proud to be so, then. The renunciation did not last long but was still in effect in 1954, when my Mom & I came to US.
There is a quicker way, at least in Germany. Get there as a temporary / permanent resident, pass Deutsch B1 level language exam let's say through Goethe Institut and live there for 5 years -> you may get the passport. Pass Deutsch C1 (almost native level) and be well integrated for sure and 3 years would be enough. To confirm this way, search for New German Immigration Law 2024 or Germany new Naturalization Act 2024.
No, you can only live and work in Portugal, but you can visit other EU states without a visa (Schengen visitation rules apply). Speaking as a D7 permit holder!
When I arrive at a French airport can I renounce my American citizenship and ask for Political Asylum? So I can get on a fast track to becoming either an EU or French Citizen? I have a guaranteed income of $1200/mo. with my SSI and Social Security.
You would have to renounce your citizenship at the U.S. Embassy, at a cost of over us$2000. 😡 However, I think you should wait until you have secured a second citizenship first.
If you renounce your US citizenship, you should also check to see how that might affect your Social Security. Not sure how that works but would be a good thing to check beforehand.
If you renounce your US citizenship without having another citizenship at that time, then oviously you are "stateless". You are no longer citizen of anywhere. And you can't renounce at an airport...Are you serious?
@@dawsondrewberry751 This is true. Asylum is only granted to persons in peril of their lives and the lives of their immediate family. Just wanting out of the US - a perfectly reasonable idea - is not enough.

Three years ago I heard that perhaps the easiest way of all to get an EU passport is first by living for a very short time in Curaçao - a Caribbean island which is part of the Netherlands. Apparently the government of the Netherlands will recognize and expedite an EU passport for people who use residency in Curaçao as a springboard. I don’t have the details at hand, and I ask that anyone who reads this to receive my comment with healthy skepticism. I don’t want to spread misinformation. However, this is definitely worthy of further investigation.
I investigated this one. You have to invest approx $400,000 (eg, buy a home) to get residency. After 5 years, you can apply for Dutch citizenship, but there is a language requirement, so you will have to learn some Dutch. During your residency period, you can't live in the Netherlands, you can only visit under normal Schengen rules. The biggest issue is: the cost of living on the island is very expensive!
Spain does not allow dual citizenship for citizens of non former Spanish colonies. Americans would officially have to renounce their American citizenship.
This person making the video hasn’t a clue, for start Spain doesn’t allow dual citizenship, Netherlands is one of the few western countries that bans dual nationality. There are 27 countries make up the EU each have their own rules on citizenships. Austria Bulgaria Croatia Estonia Latvia Lithuania Netherlands Slovenia (exception extraordinary naturalization) Spain countries disallowing dual citizenship for foreigners
@@AureliePoulain true. But there are some discussions about easing travel restrictions to allow for long term residence between the UK and EU countries
Not so. Absolutely not so. The central plank of the Brexit 'Leave' campaign was the abolition of Freedom of Movement aka the myth that EU immagrants were 'swamping' the country. UK is now a 'Third Country' like Guatamala or Uzbekistan. P.M. Starmer is a lawyer. As such he is politcally determined not to appear to row back on the legal decision of 'The People' that UK leaves the EU, with all that that entails. Having a UK passport gives you no more than any other Third Country entitlement to be in the Schengem Zone - 90 days in any 180. Once you have clocked up 90 days you must be out of the Schengen Zone for the next 180. There is no recourse to 'resetting the clock' by returning to UK or a non-Schengen country such as Ireland or Malta before the 90 days is up. As a registered resident of FR I am still bound by this rule. I can spend the rest of my life in FR but as a UK passport holder I am still bound by the 90 day rule in the rest of the Schengen Zone. The only way round this is to apply for FR citizenship after 5 years in FR.
@@dbreardon Yes, there are discussions. There have been ever since the disaster of 'Leave' won the vote. Meanwhile, people who bitterly regret the result of Leave, as I do, have meetings and and discussions and put forward proposals. They are all meaningless and have, so far, come to nothing. The EU have discussed this at top level and rejected it. The law of the land - the UK result of the vote - cannot be finagled by 'discussions'. It will only be changed by legislation in UK matched by legislation in EU, jointly approving the measure. Do not hold your breath. There is no problem establishing a 'long term residence' in any EU country for a UK citizen., as I have done. However, as you see from my post below, this does not mean you are not still subject to the 90 day Schengen Zone rule - you are.
You are NOT eligible. You may be eligible to extend your residency permit. To become a citizen of an EU country you have to apply to become a national - a very different matter. For one thing, a language competency test will be part of it.
First of all a citizenship is not intended to acquire benefits of it without contributing to the society. Otherwise it's a rip off. Think about living, working, paying taxes in the society before trying to become eligible for the benefits that come with citizenship.

Not interested in the EU and certainly do not want an EU passport. We voted Out in 2016 and to date no British government has acted on that vote. This is simply crude prooganda.
But of course we were lied to on a number of fronts so frankly were conned out of the EU and now the financial issues to Brexit are becoming abundantly clear, our economy is suffering and the UK is a hugely poorer place for having left.
@SimonPilkington-g3i ,Utter nonsense. The EU is a cesspit of corruption. Never had its accounts signed off and of course it is a front for a One World Government which is why Kneel is so keen.
That is true. As the resident of a country that is a member of the EU you have certain rights and privileges. These are not necessarily universal throughout the EU. For a basic example, the rules about what you must carry in your car in the event of a breakdown are differnet in FR and ES. Two reflective triangles in ES, one in FR. The vehicle safety inspection in ES is annual. In FR every two years. But as the passport holder of an EU country you have the right to live/work in any other EU country.
Absolutely bad information. Minimum of 7-7.5 years in Portugal total. The AIMA is 400,000 applicants behind. 5 years is the residency requirement only! After the five you can apply for citizenship which begins the wait of 2- 2.5 years of processing
Spain doesn't allow dual citizenship. Only people from Latin American countries, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, and Andorra can get dual citizenship. You should get your information right. And the Spanish language test is hard. You have to have at least a B2 level to pass it. Getting advantage of hysterical people is wrong.
In practice, you state you will renounce US citizenship, but, do not go through the renunciation process for the US at an embassy and pay the renunciation fee of $2350. You are still a US citizen in actuality.
Without another citizenship? That is illogical, because then you are a citizen of nowhere, "stateless". You must make an appointment at any US embassy, which could take a while depending on the location. You may wait months.

No. The 90 days applies to the entire Shengen Zone. I am a registered resident of FR [a UK passport holder] I can be in FR as long as I like but the clock starts ticking down to 90 days as soon as I cross into another Schengen Zone country.
Yeah enforcement is very relaxed
Cool, thanks !

I turned away from Spain's 10-year citizenship plan as it states that renouncing the citizenship of your home country is a requirement to obtain Spanish citizenship. Plenty of other EU countries permit dual citizenship through naturalization, so maybe Spain will drop their requirement.
many do NOT allow dual citizenship - spain is not the only one ❗️
I doubt that will happen any time soon. Meanwhile, even if you have renounced your US citizenship as far as Spain is concerned, the US still considers you a citizen until you formally go through the (expensive) process in the US to do so.
@@lindav1403 fair enough, but since Portugal allows dual citizenship and requires half as much time for naturalization, they easily come out ahead of Spain.
@ If you were born in Germany that should make you a German citizen. I would contact your local German consulate to establish that premise.
Okay, great. I'll go back and be born again in a country of my choice.

Yes but probably a question of money...

Easier as you get access to Ireland. And it seems like they are negotiating some new deal that will allow some freedom of movement
The UK (British passport) is NOT in the EU, so it isn't as easy as you may imagine. Or vice versa.

Easy, move to the EU, find a job, learn the language, pay taxes, after five years you are eligible.

First of all a citizenship is not intended to acquire benefits of it without contributing to the society. Otherwise it's a rip off.
Think about living, working, paying taxes in the society before trying to become eligible for the benefits that come with citizenship.
Why not. Most of the illegal migrants coming to EU do so to get benefits without contributing.

There is no such thing as "EU citizenship."
