Just as a follow-up: I ended up playing through the rest of the game right after making this video, it's just that enjoyable. Took about 2 hours and was a blast the entire way through! The lack of a savegame isn't a huge deal, as there are only 5 levels per episode.
I love this kinda game too. I'm picking this up ASAP. Especially for four bucks! Have you ever played Iji? It's like Another World meets Metroid meets Duke Nukem. Fantastic game. If you haven't played it, download it as it is free, and make sure you get the better soundtrack. Such a -fantastic- game.
"I've seen a million and one NES modern retro games" Yes! That was my thought exactly! Which is why when I decided to make a retro throwback myself I decided to go with the C=64 style. Some of my favorites from this era were Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure and Dangerous Dave and the Haunted Mansion. Retro City Rampage was really done in a NES style. The guy who developed it even originally wanted to make it an actual NES game. He showed a video of a prototype he made running on the NES. Here is a link to the video. The Making of: ROM City Rampage (Retro City Rampage) It looks pretty good, have a good one man. ^_^
I was about to recommend the game to you, knowing how well it fits your playing history, and then I saw this video pop up. :) It's a lovingly crafted game from someone who knows their reference material very well. My favorite kind of retro homage.
I bought this game immediately after finishing the video and just blasted through the first episode. I cannot thank you enough for bringing this amazing game to my attention.
Just wanted to say thank you for recommending this game. Wouldn't have noticed this one without LGR. Great little gem, love the enemy design and odd story
well you have done it!! darn you lgr i am now hands down into these early dos games !! this looks really fun to play and your love for dos and these kind of games is really great to see!!just like my love for japan! great game great review great everything!!!
Oh the beauty of EGA graphics. I grew up with dos games, they were great. I have been meaning to go through my dads floppy archives because there were some really great games. I wish I just remembered the names of all the great games that I played because I always had some simple name for the games, some I do remember like Alley Cat and Aldos Adventure, but there was one platformer game thats name I dont remember where you would control guy that looked like he was in a grey space suit and it had different weapons and maybe branching paths. So many memories on old DOS games, they are the best.
This game is great! I had only just heard about it two days ago! There's actually at least four other indie devs working on DOS-style titles right now. On the subject of Retro City Rampage: It had actually been originally developed as a NES homebrew title, before the author decided to scrap the Rom format, and create a PC friendly version of the game. He actually eventually went back and built the game as a proper NES Rom, the emulated game is now an easter egg in the newer releases of the game.
This is soooo cool. I remember Christmas when I was 6, it was a choice between a computer, and an NES, and I wanted the NES, but instead my parents bought me the computer, and was that an awesome decision - going against my wishes, and giving me something that when powered on showed a bunch of crap that wizzed by, and then a blinking cursor at the C:\ prompt. The guy who we bought the computer from showed me a few tricks and tips on how to use it, and from then on, it was Cycles, Commander Keen, Leisure Suit Larry, Duke Nukem of course, and a ton of other games.... Those were the days, but they were just as good as my next computer which allowed me to play Doom, Heretic, Hexen, and the rest.... I got the NES the next Christmas, but by then, Sega, TG-16 and the Neo Geo were the systems to get, but way too expensive. I played the NES so much, one day I was not being a good little boy, and my dad, pissed off with me, just took it and smashed it. I cried forever, but I still had my PC, and I'll never forget it and all these games that were so cool back then.
I grew up playing DOS games, in 1990 we got a brand new 486, and we had so many DOS games, and when we started using the internet in 1996 me and my brother found sites to download shareware titles and fell in love with the Apogee sidescrollers, and you started playing this game I first thought Duke Nukem 1. We need more of these, I would like someone to make a FPS in the style of Wolf3D
Not only do I see influences from Duke Nukem 1, but also a little bit from DOS Mega Man, Commander Keen, and BioMenace. This game looks perfect! I wonder how the developer managed to replicate all those classic DOS effects, and with what engine. I'm glad you also are excited by the prospect of DOS imitation games being made, particularly ones which adhere to the rules and look of classic Apogee platformers, because I totally want to do that once I become a game designer.
I think something was wrong with the 32 FPS mode on your system because it's not supposed to go that fast... Me personally, while I don't think there's anything majorly wrong with the game, I don't think it really reaches the same standards set by those old DOS platformers. But then, that's the beauty of these modern titles that take after older games: We're each hit by nostalgia differently. For instance, I loved Retro City Rampage! :) I also find it ironic that you gave the main character the voice of Duke Nukem given her gender. ;D
Insta-buy! This is such a nostalgic game for me cause I grew up on these kinds of games, especially the first Duke Nukem. You're right, it does really feel like a genuine DOS EGA game and that's pretty impressive imo.
OMG! The shareware is amazing xD So much nostalgia when looking at the screenshots of the full game.. reminds me so much of JJ and other shareware's you would find bundled. whauw.
I would definitely love to see more new-gen games with old-style DOS graphics like this as well! Though I would prefer a tad bit more, if not a lot more depth, just in terms of gameplay features.
I had actually never really played the early DOS platforming games. The only DOS game I played was Doom and Duke Nukem 3D. After completing this game I now feel like I might need to take a look at them and try out the actual DOS 2D classics. Because this was legitimately fun.
Oddly enough Retro City Rampage actually started out as a true NES game. The NES version is even included with RCR as an extra. It's kinda basic, but the core mechanics are mostly there.
I'd like to venture a guess at the PC sounds - if they're coming through your speakers, then they will sound different than the internal PC noises. I noticed this when I was fooling around on my older PC and listening to "wav recordings" of pc speakers on the net. The wav recordings sounded sharper, even though they were "the same sounds". I'm convinced it has to do with the echo of the speaker inside a computer housing vs piping it through a more advanced desktop speaker that is developed to handle CD output.
If you haven't already, check out Daniel Remar's other games - he's a pretty prolific developer. Iji, Hero Core and Hyper Princess Pitch are seriously three of the best freeware games I've ever played. I liked them so much that I bought Muri the moment it was released, simply because I felt like I owed the guy some money for all his hard work.
Oh yeah - Hyper Princess Pitch is a pseudo-remake of the old DOS shooter Operation Carnage, and Hero Core uses a super-low-fi monochrome art style. Iji feels kinda like a 2D System Shock.
most VGA or some EGA supported dos games I.E. Commander Keen 4-6 can patch the Brown to Dark Yellow when needed, Commander Keen uses it for Dark Yellow stuff on VGA only, for example!
Of course, nothing is stopping people from making their games actually a DOS game and having it launch via DSOBox. Like the Atari Age people who strive to make things that run on a real 2600, not just looks like something from the 2600.
This is the style of games i grow up with.. its awesome!! It reminds a little of Electro Man and Mopsy... and about you: SELL YOU VOICE! If i had your voice i would be a voice actor!
That looks like an old scool game. To bad they don't make that many old scoll PC games(like you said). I played a lot of those shwareware game back in the 90s.
:D - looks like a good retro game, (that character with no colour you had difficulty killing for a moment looks like the hardest character on it). I do have just one question about the game Clint, what happens when you chose the "Return To DOS" option, do you go back to Windows or do you return to a retro-style DOS screen (first)? Just wondering, thanks!
Makes me wish some indie developers will now also develop games similar to the VGA games of the 90s such as Wing Commander, Secret of Monkey Island, Ultima, Strike Commander before the PC developers went all FPS and RTS (don't get me wrong, I love Doom, Half Life, Dark Forces, Command and Conquer, and Starcraft). And while we are at it, please indie developers, also make some Amiga like games from its golden period (titles such as James Pond 1&2, It came from the desert, Fire Force, Walker) before developers focused on bringing the PC experience to the Amiga.
cool game, but i prefer the graphical era just right after this, like a slight little bit more advanced with more blood etc in the effects ;) especially Blackthorne / Blackhawk is really a game i will never forget as that is probably the coolest looking platformer ever made :)
I'm currently trying to develop a retro dos game, but I lack any artistic abilities. Plus I ain't played as many as a kid to get into this style properly, I guess. Great video, by the way.
You should play Space Quest 0 , it is done in dos but they did remove the dos exe and replace it with AGI emulator , but it is stil very well done for a 1986 type game
I also bought this as soon as I saw it on steam :). Check out the .sav file in the steam directory with notepad there's a message from the devs and some cheatcodes
Dude! This is SO awesome! Sold! Actually - dude, I made a similarly (though not quite as) oldschool game. Is there some way I can get in touch with you to give you a review build to play?
(Of course it's way more like duke... With all the corridoors and pickups and such... And the lack of suction cups for hands :) But that awkward jumping, really, that's Cosmo.) Btw, if you haven't played Cosmo, you totally should :) That was one of the most awesomest platforming games I ever played on DOS.
Lazy Game Reviews Thanks, I know i know :) I wasn't that serious :) just that the partiular jumping animation happened to strike a clearly discernible Cosmo chord and I needed to mention that very enjoyable platformer. Video after ideo of you makes me remember, even relive all kinds of situations from my childhood, many of which I am remembering for the first time in 15-25 years (literally) and it rocks.
Now they need to make a demo version that is made like a shareware version. Also they need to let your purchase a Steam code via mail and send it to you via floppy disk.
Is that any retro game that is similar in concept to X-Men Rise of Apocalypse? Some PC that works on Windows XP. I love their plot and love that you can choose between so many characters. Love the idea of teamwork. Don't know if this counts as a Retro Game, though. I own it, but don't know when it was released. Doubt it is old enough to be retro ...
This game is great. It does look like early Apogee game. One thing that it lacks is the ability to turn on the Adlib-style music. Also the main protagonist reminds me a lot of android from Appleseeed and a little of metroid (female suit. This definitelly must be a female suit XD )
I don't know anybody that had an IBM computer back in those days. They would cost about £1000 which would be like double now. All about Amigas and stuff, man.
Not in the US! I didn't know a single person with an Amiga, but almost everyone I knew with a computer had an IBM-compatible (and even a few with an IBM.)
What's also really cool about this game, is that (the demo at least) is only 3MB!!! And it's just an executable! As a programmer, I would love to know how they crammed this game into 3MB on a modern Windows platform executable. I can't even make a window pop up in less than 6MB!!! Also, if you get this game, play some Adlib music in the background. It makes it 10x better! I like to put this track on loop: ruclips.net/video/PEb5vJwYn-c/видео.html
Just as a follow-up: I ended up playing through the rest of the game right after making this video, it's just that enjoyable. Took about 2 hours and was a blast the entire way through! The lack of a savegame isn't a huge deal, as there are only 5 levels per episode.
are you getting sims 3 roaring heights?
***** Yes. I cannot freaking wait for it, honestly.
MudPuppit *Cosmo's, but yes :)
That game is seriously challenging, especially being that it was aimed at a younger audience!
Lazy Game Reviews would you recomend this to someone who likes platformers but has never played a dos games
I love this kinda game too. I'm picking this up ASAP. Especially for four bucks!
Have you ever played Iji? It's like Another World meets Metroid meets Duke Nukem. Fantastic game. If you haven't played it, download it as it is free, and make sure you get the better soundtrack.

It looks pretty good, have a good one man. ^_^
The picture of the protagonist at the title screen looks... fabulous.
For some reason, Cujo reminds me of the heroine from 'The Guardian Legend.' Look similar too, save for the lesser CGA graphics.
This will be more than the hundredth video I've watched on this channel this weekend so far.
I was about to recommend the game to you, knowing how well it fits your playing history, and then I saw this video pop up. :)

oh I need to pick this one up, looks like a whole lot of fun

Finally a retro throw-back that actually looks & sounds like it could have been made back then.

Picked this one up after checking out your video of this one. It was a little short, but still pretty ace. Thanks for the heads up brotha!

The best thing is when people not only work within the limitations of old hardware, but also push its potential, like those crazy C64 projects.
Your reviews are brilliant educational and wildly entertaining...keep it up!
Man, I would of swore this was something from the early 90's until you mentioned it was made recently. Neat stuff. :)
Dude, there is one more DOS style game: You Have to Win the game by Pirate Heats. Freeware exploration platformer with a retro 1980s PC aesthetic.
There's something oddly soothing about spartan PC-Speaker sound effects.
sick duke nukem voice dude haha
I knew you were going to make a video of this once I saw it on steam!
The armor's shape and color scheme reminds me of the Psychic Pokemon, Mewtwo (minus the tail). This game looks really fun to play! :)
I'd like to venture a guess at the PC sounds - if they're coming through your speakers, then they will sound different than the internal PC noises. Retro city rampage has a 486 Dx dos/win3.1 mode that fits on a disket and runs on a real 486 Dx on dos now.
As I've covered, yep.
ruclips.net/video/Il65FIKWgEk/видео.html
That game looks pretty awesome, definitely got my interest. :D
A mechanical keyboard being used to play the game really makes this playthrough.
I don't know the older Duke Nukem games too well but the lighting effects are exactly the same as in Commander Keen 1 to 3.
i played dos games when i was little :D I should get this game. looks fun as hell
Of course, nothing is stopping people from making their games actually a DOS game and having it launch via DSOBox. Like the Atari Age people who strive to make things that run on a real 2600, not just looks like something from the 2600.
Cool, this was made by Daniel Remar who also made Iji and Hero Core.
If only other so called "retro inspired games" could be more faithful
The fact that you can bounce off enemies hearken back to Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure. The only suck point of CCA was the frame-rate.
Update: The price is currently $4.99. I just want to let everyone know.
Im feeling ashamed for having missed this game. Rectifying my mistake right now !
Anyone reminded of thew retro style game Iji at all? I loved that game.
I saw your review on steam.

I do have just one question about the game Clint, what happens when you chose the "Return To DOS" option, do you go back to Windows or do you return to a retro-style DOS screen (first)? Looks great. Here's hoping it'll make it to other distribution services too, preferably Desura.
Clint you should do another Top 17 list with your favorite DOS platformers!
Yay, another excuse to stand up and not cook dinner. =D
I love you LGR. ^^ You know, in a totally platonic and non-creepy way ...
BTW I wonder if this game will be ported to other systems also, as it would even work well on touch screens.
The game reminds me a lot of Super Metroid in its artstyle, hud, and weapons
I think you will be happy to know, i am working on an EGA and CGA texture pack for minecraft.
this looks so cool!

My "gaming career" started out on my dad's computer and his collection of shareware which included things Duke I, II and Haloween Harry.
cool game, but i prefer the graphical era just right after this, like a slight little bit more advanced with more blood etc in the effects ;) especially Blackthorne / Blackhawk is really a game i will never forget as that is probably the coolest looking platformer ever made :)
If you want to see more EGA type titles then start a Game Jam? Developers like a challenge and there are other specific Game Jams out there!
this game reminds me so much of commander keen!! :D
You gotta do a vid on Biomenace clint.. That game was badass.
looks awesome
You say that this feels like the original Duke Nukem? Let's wait for some sequel if the main character's body is now red.
Wow that´s impressive, i don´t know this game. It looks realy like Duke Nukem and the first Commander Keens parts.
im going to grab a copy , this game (16fps) looks awesome, i could write a longer message, but im going to go play Commander Keen now
"Retro City Rampage didn't do that, this DOS"
Dude! This is SO awesome! Sold!
Actually - dude, I made a similarly (though not quite as) oldschool game. Is there some way I can get in touch with you to give you a review build to play?
The game looks fine and fun but I wonder how well it would look with better graphics.
No no, not mostly Duke Dukem 1... Much more like Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure. Look at that jump stance!
Considering Cosmo uses the same engine as Duke did and is made by the same lead developers...
*some game that works on Windows XP.
Changed my mind mid-sentence on how to word that. =P
This game is great. It does look like early Apogee game. One thing that it lacks is the ability to turn on the Adlib-style music. Also the main protagonist reminds me a lot of android from Appleseeed and a little of metroid (female suit. This definitelly must be a female suit XD )
Need more DOS style Games.
That's look badass!
Maybe if they added a little jetpack noise to the jump and added a tiny sprite animation, the jump might seem more fitting.
i like how the character kinda look like a bunny humanoid because of the ears and the form of the google part XD reminds me of overgrowth to much
"Cloaks and spells" is another interesting approach on rebuilding a retro feel. Unfortunately is not that spot on like Muri.
I don't know anybody that had an IBM computer back in those days. They would cost about £1000 which would be like double now. All about Amigas and stuff, man.
Not in the US! I didn't know a single person with an Amiga, but almost everyone I knew with a computer had an IBM-compatible (and even a few with an IBM.)
looks like a mecha Mewtwo without the Tail
RCR can be run on an original nes ... just whit a bit less happening on the screen (dudes & stuff spritelimit)
What's also really cool about this game, is that (the demo at least) is only 3MB!!! And it's just an executable! As a programmer, I would love to know how they crammed this game into 3MB on a modern Windows platform executable. I can't even make a window pop up in less than 6MB!!! Can you review "Iji", it was made by the same guy.
Some sound efx. sound just like Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure.
Interesting. It's like someone made a cybernetic suit stylized after Mewtwo.
The only thing this game needs is fixed 4:3 aspect ratio!:D
LGR You have to play Iji. It's a free pc platformer. I wont say anymore just check it :P
I'm sure 32fps is for younger audience that are used to 30 fps atleast. I know my cousins get weird game lag playing older games with me.
Pre-Carmack EGA choppyscrolling! I love it.
Also, I could have sworn Muri was a girl. It has girly hips and boobs! It's MAGENTA.
