Very good video topic. Most gear disagreements among bass players come from the fact that we need vastly different tools to do our jobs, depending on genre. Especially if you're an older musician playing a basic genre like blues or classic rock, you need to develop an understanding that there's more to life than P bass into Ampeg with no pedals.
I've been lucky enough to have some great instruments and amps. Over the years, I had a terrific custom cabinet made, a TL cabinet with an EVM-15L speaker, over the years, powered it with an Ampeg V4 (the guitar head), but later, a Fender 300PS, basically Fender's take on an SVT. I've always like Fender better than Ampeg. That was my favorite amp, but I hated moving it! I had a custom 1977 Rickenbacker 4001, but had lots of problems with the neck, until TWA snapped the headstock off in 1979, and with the settlement, I bought a used 75 Carl Thomson bass, which I eventually sold, then bought back, and still have it. I've also got an Alembic Distillate that's amazing, but if I could have anything, I'd love an Alembic Series II, along with the Alembic F-2B preamp and the SF-2 Super Filter, to MacIntosh amps (pretty much the old touring rig of Phil Lesh.) And I LOVE Phil Jones equipment, I've played some of their compact and mid-range amps, and they're absolutely amazing! While I don't own any amps these days, (I've been playing with Amplitube 5,) I do use Phil Jones headphones, which are spectacular.
That was awesome, completely out of reach for most but still awesome. I really enjoyed fantasizing about top of the line gear as i am the proud owner of a super fabulous Affinity P-bass that came in the Fender Bass Starter kit i bought in december 2020 as the Covid pandemic was keeping me home. Anyway, cheers Gregor! EDIT: Oh my bucket list bass would probably a Sandberg California 4 string, 24 frets perfection.
Klegor's not just endorsing particular guitars here -- he's also saying something about passive versus active instruments. Just look at his favorites. And even in the category lists, the active instrument is often a throw-in because sometimes you need one. It's an interesting point.
Gregor, I love German basses made by Klira. I have a 1965 Klira Arkansas bass in fire engine Red color! It is a jazz style with offset body and 2 pickups.
Since I'm on the other side of the Atlantic, I can't afford ANY of the basses & amps shown here; but my perfect rig would be: a Sterling SUB with an HH modification and maple fingerboard, any jazz bass with 21 frets and maple fingerbord with an active preamp mod , a Dean Edge VI fretless and just a Focusrite. As for amps, I'd go for an Ampeg SVT (after I sell my kidneys). Anyway, great video Gregor. Greetings from Argentina.
Would love to see a good breakdown of the differences in fretboards. Mainly between Maple, Ebony, and Rosewood. I've never played a maple fretboard, only rosewood.
If you were gonna do a funk, slap type with a brighter sound, so I'd say the none flats which I'd assume would be round wound, which bass would you use for that? Either would be a great choice but which bass would you be picking?
@@adamdixon6326 tbh you can do funk on any of the classic three (P, J, and Stingray) - slap is better on a J and a stingray. personally i’d choose the stingray for funk and slap. check out Fernando Rosa, he does all that on all kinds of stuff
WONDERFUL VIDEO!!! At the end with the Quantum Dimensional Gregors I laughed my head off!!! 😂 Bucket List Bass: I'm A Simple Man. A Vintage 60's Fender Jazz Bass!!!
My dream rig is the B&G Big Sister, Cort A4 Ultra, Cort Elrick NJS, or the Cort Rithimic (yes I love Cort basses a bit too much it seems lol) Amps its between the Aguilar Tone Hammer with the Aguilar SL410 Cab, or the Bergantino Forte HP with the Bergantino NXV410 cab. Pedal/Non amp either the Nueral DSP Quad Cortex or the Line 6 Helix. I already use Helix native on my laptop and love it.
I got my absolute bucket list bass two years ago and you may find it a little bit unusual, it's a 1976 Ibanez Black Eagle. I still can't believe I got one after wanting one for all my life since I was a kid...lol.
I have a number of basses, including a P, a J, a Ric and a Stingray; I bought them all new in the 70s, and a number of amps. Today? I use an Alembic Elan+ six-string bass and a Kemper profiler for virtually everything. There are few basses that can match the versatility of an Alembic, and the Kemper has essentially all the amps and speaker combinations one could want in a single box.
I have a 5-string Sterling by Music Man Stingray Subray5 HH. Two humbuckers, two band EQ of bass and treble and 22-fret maple neck with maple fingerboard. Maybe not so much the single humbucker sting rays, but the double humbuckers are grate for Hard Core to mild technical death metal. I also have an Ibanez SR306EB 6-string bass with 24-frets and a 3 band EQ with Bass, Mid, and Treble. It also has a coil selector switch on it. Now that thing will work grate with extreme technical death metal especially if you put new stainless steel round wound strings on it. Of course you can play other kinds of music with them. But for basics, I have a 4-string Silver Tone P Bass with 20-frets. completely passive. I got that as a birthday gift from my family in 2006. So that thing is very special to me.
Dear Basstheworld! The simpliest stuffs for rock and metal music. Basses: Precision,Jazz,Rickenkacker. Amps: Fender Bassman, Marshall Superbass, Ampeg SVT. Warwick Alien acoustic 4 bass with flats and a fender 200 rumble. It’s all I need for all the jazz situations I find. The money you guys spend is nuts.
Towards the end (11:16) you show a very small combo amp by "PB" that you refer to as a "briefcase amp." I don't see it listed in your video notes...who's the maker?
my fave electric bass jazz rig is a fretted rw jazz w/ flats and ashtray cover bridge mute, or my Ibanez srh500F. If I'm bringing my upright and/or fender/ibanez I use my GK MB150E amp for both. Jazz is rarely loud so it works perfect.

My current dream rig would be two Eich T1000 classics, and an Eich XLCab. As for basses, It's really hard for me to say anything other then my Benavente basses, but those Marleaux Diva's are just so perfect for fretless, and good J and P bass. Great video!
I'm really digging Lākland basses, all of them. But I'm dying to try out some Sandberg, they look great. Amps... I'm not particularly impressed with class D stuff. And I'm not super impressed with the tube reissue stuff. It's just ok. If I could get my old V4 back that'd be cool. I've never tried Glockenklang, they look cool, put that on my list too.
Hey Gregor! Nice video as always 👌 Just a little suggestion for future videos; I noticed you did mention an italian Amp, the GR, but no italian basses so I think you REALLY should check out Manne, Laurus and Meridian. Laurus is perfect for jazz, it sets the notch so high. For Pop, R&B and stuff, Meridian makes a great choice, better the other brands you put on this list. And finally, Manne... it's mainly used by jazz and rock players but, believe me, Manne basses growl so hard they would make Dingwalls pale out. I got one, a "basic" model, 5 string and graphite fretboard, and though I played dozens of basses no one compares to this model. Give them a go, you won't regret it 😎
It will be great to see the list with beginner or budget options from toman, and ofc for working musicians but with limitations on budget. It is a great video, for jazz I think you could also add a 6-string Yamaha from JP. But overall great video.

If money is no object, I want a Testore (father or son, I don't care) and a Prescott 5 string to shake the orchestra off of the stage (you didn't say it HAS to be an electric bass). Then a vintage precision, as old as I can find. I would like an eight string, but don't know enough to make a specific selection. Lastly, I want a six string Electric buck down to a low G instead of a high c. I'm fairly open to Brand on that as well, Maybe I try one of those German bases that you were mentioning. I love the Rheingold preamp/ EQ pedal, and I also want the Motown DI. I would like the classic SVT with 8x10 cabinet, but to that I would add some sort of modern rig. It is not a terribly decisive list, and I think it's clear that I have not really explored all options that are out there. I guess I am just used to using what I have playing it as well as I can. My Peavey T40 has served me well for decades.

Hm... bucket list gear. I'd like to have an Ibanez SR5000 OL - but passive (I don't like active basses). I doubt that there'll any to buy... but I can still dream. Other than that maybe a PJ Briefcase Combo and a Peavey T. B. Raxx Preamp. Had one decades ago and still regret selling it. To be honest: these are all nice things to have. Do I really need them? No. Just as you said: bucket list gear when money is no concern😉
My bucket list P basses would be the one owned by Michael League from Snarky Puppy, or the one owned by Paz Lechantin. After that, nothing else would matter.
I agree that a P, a Rick and a Music Man are the perfect combo for all types of music though I would not recommend a Music Man for a 5er since the neck is so narrow. As for a Pre-amp, you can't go wrong with the good old Sans Amp. The early "Tele style slab body" P basses are cool but I don't find them to have a definitive sound nor are they indicative of any style of music or player. The Fodera? Pffft. Had one. An overrated, overpriced toneless wonder. The Aquilar is nice but I don't like the tone controls. I have a Mark Bass and it works fine. As for cabs -- they're so personal and there are several good choices. I mix a Bergantino with a Hartke. It gives me a clarity along with a punch that suits my styles, but that's a personal choice. And for a jazz gig, I can take just one cab. For fretless, I go with a Fender Jazz. That's the classic fretless sound. The SVT is cool, but honestly, the Sans Amp can get you close. As for the big cabinet...I don't see the point. Any time you need that much volume you'll be going through a P.A. anyway. I also have a place in my heart for Ibanez basses. Clean, clear, active sound, looks sleek and doesn't break the bank.
I would also like to hear the GR Bass units live . The 4-10 weighs 33 lbs. in carbon fiber , a 2-12 28 lbs. Nothing like a live show with a top player to see how it sounds .
@@basstheworldofficial I own it also, and you're right, it is big fun. My subwave and synth no longer seem to work anymore though. I still use the compression, drive, and chorus, and I use the separate outputs to run to separate 4 ohm cabs. I love how much power it provides and it still sounds great, so I still use it. Cheers!
I want two five strings one fretless with flats one fretted with round both active/ passive, comfortable, light, reliable and versatile. Don't care about the name on the headstock
I wouldn't buy a Sandberg from Thomann, I'd order directly from Sandberg with the options I want. Thomann's lead time is months, so you'd be waiting if you went through them too.

I still use the compression, drive, and chorus, and I use the separate outputs to run to separate 4 ohm cabs. I love how much power it provides and it still sounds great, so I still use it.
Cheers!
No Alembic for a dream bass rig?
Welcome to the 21st century 🙂
Would add darkglass and sansamp to the Metal list
Looking forward to the review of my mom.
5:33 a $16,000 bass?!?!?!
Mesa Boogie with Darkglass and an LTD Bass
Best Metal combi
I want two five strings one fretless with flats one fretted with round both active/ passive, comfortable, light, reliable and versatile. Don't care about the name on the headstock
ah yes this reminds me of myself 15 years ago when i used to look for the most important bass gear on thomann that ill never ever buy. fun times.
Ich schreibe mal faulheitshalber auf deutsch. (Faulen, grammatikalisch falschen deutsch)
So this is like me sitting on the toilet as a kid with the big Sears catalogue.
Strandberg Prog 5 for jazz and metal...
That tony grey sig looks so fucking sexy
If money was no obstacle: GRETSCH TOM PETERSSON SIGNATURE 12-STRING FALCON BASS while continuing to learn to play so I can enjoy it.
I wouldn't buy a Sandberg from Thomann, I'd order directly from Sandberg with the options I want. Thomann's lead time is months, so you'd be waiting if you went through them too.
Sandberg doesn’t sell directly
REAL TITLE: ALL THE THINGS YOU CANNOT AFFORD IN 2022

He talks like Arnold Schwarzenegger epic also thx for your wisdom
I WANT ONE OF EACH GREGOR
SansAmp BDDI = Rock
Ooooor, you go for a Japanese-brand 4string PJ-Bass or 5string double soapbar Bass and a Line 6 Helix and never have to buy anything else again.
Please ask your dad Frank to play again...
What ? No Ashdown ? No Trace Elliott ?? No Gallien Krueger ???
👍👍👌
That metal category is missing a warwick instead of that spector ^^
Really, you don't have a B15? Really?
Hi, No Fender J-Bass, really? ….but it’s all dependent on personal taste.
sorry, I am not a miljonair 😀
The more expensive the bass is, the uglier it gets 😂
First
