Sound and the Fury - Fanny

- Although I wrote this song lo those many years ago, I love it. Recorded by Fanny mostly at Apple Studio on Saville Row in London, with Richard Perry producing and Geoff Emerick, engineer. The pedal steel was Sneaky Pete, overdubbed in LA early '72 (the basics were done Dec '71). I love what everyone in the band was doing, in my opinion they played perfectly for the song. We were listening to music eclectically then, from heavy metal to Motown/funk, to country western and blues. No one opposed me in doing this song, which I am so glad for. Alice's crisp sounds, groove, and every lick are perfection (and by that, I also include *driving in my meaning), Jean is as usual honkin' the bottom with that inimitable way she did, and Nicky could be accused of overplaying slightly, but again - it's actually perfect. Never got in the way. This is on tape, of course, which makes it sound even better!
Jean's on harmonies, she could even be doubling my vocal in some places, I can't really tell. Our voices are so similar that even I can get tricked!:))
Incidentally, a note about Sneaky Pete: we saw him playing with the Flying Burrito Brothers and I was smitten. He was so - o-oo good! You could say I stalked him until he came over to the house, but it didn't take much ... we became excellent friends and he showed me a lot of inner movement, just by doing it (playing) in front of me. I will always be grateful.
And lastly, I regret to say that the track kept acting like Wile E. Coyote, behaving perfectly fine one second, and then doing that awkward skip at the top and missing the first word, "I." I thought it was behaving when I did the "share," but Wile E. got me! Maybe I'll ry again to correct sometime, but right now I've got to move on. (although, who knows, the track might behave!!:))
Photos are by Linda Wolf, Oliver Strewe, Bob Riegler, and also provided from the June and Jean Millington Collection. Enjoy!

Dolly Parton's jugs take up too much room .....no vacancy. No room for Fanny.Maybe they'll have a shot at the country music hall of fame??!¿!
I meant that pro Fanny. ...June had a nice one
haven't checked in on FANNY on youtube for a while now
delighted to see so much more available now
looking forward to checking it out
thanks to all involved
I wasn't expecting a country song from them. They were so diverse.
So long ago, but so timeless... This song should play over the closing credits of a movie, it's so evocative. And Sneaky Pete makes everything just a little better. Great job, June and Fanny!
Well said.
Listening to this, I am getting quite emotional. It's my age. Not the song - beautiful though it is. But the cruelty of passing time.
We were fans of theirs in the UK in the early seventies.
Circa 2000 I had arranged online to meet June in a bar in their hometown in California. I was humbled and terrified in equal measure when she walked in.
I ended up spending the day with her, Jean and Alice in Jean's house. It was very surreal.
Jean was a little cool at first, but understandable as I was a stranger invited into HER house by her sister! Once she warmed up, all was good.
And June was just one of the sweetest human beings I have ever met!
They are all old ladies now. And I am an old man. But how I loved those days!
Well, time move on but the music stays ... I'm still performing. xx
When I went to work on the Alaskan pipeline back in 1974 this is one of the 8 track tapes that I took with me. Still love the music, thanks FANNY!!
I still listen
Beatiful song. I'm so happy that after all these years I discovered Fanny (at the age of 66 ....).
Finally!:)) xx
In a fair world, Fanny would still be as well known as the Beatles ❤❤❤❤great song ❤
Yes indeed. Thanks!! xx
Great pics! I love this song!
This was one of the greatest eras for music. Never heard this song before but it sounds great! I'm very happy to know the members of Fanny are finally getting recognition that is long overdue.
Thank you!! xx
I love the band, the music and also this video.
Fanny's foray into country-rock with Sneaky Pete Kleinow giving it some Flying Burrito Brothers flavor.
June, thank you for sharing with us! I have all the studio albums of such a wonderful band Fanny and enjoy listening to them. Thanks again and all the best!
Visited the "Rock n' Roll Hall" on the weekend. There's a kiosk that allows you to nominate a band or performer for entry. There's a scrolling list of performers, showing their number of nominations received. I slid over and nominated Fanny, considering they were the first all female band to release an album on a major label.
To my astonishment, it was their first nomination!
David Bowie said it best...
"They're as important as anybody else who's ever been, ever".
Rock on June!
I love this song!
It’s one of my new favorites :)
Awesome. The piano at 0:42 reminded my of Lovin Cup by the Stones. Probably Ian Stweart. This is excellent! 😀😀
Excellent song and great to hear that Sneaky Pete slide in there, too. Fanny was such a pioneering LA band. Talented women who in my opinion were under appreciated. I met you, June, at a Ruth Denison's Dhamma Dena Desert Vipassana retreat waaaaayyy back in 1986. I was the cook at that 3 week winter retreat and recall that you arrived in the wee hours. I answered the door at 3am and lo and behold, recognized you as soon as your gorgeous smile flashed!💥 You've still got it!! Thanks for posting this "new" oldie! Great lyrics.
Dhamma Dena! Fantastic. Thanks,
sister. xx
At least for now this is my favorite June song. And that sneaky steel only adds to my pleasure!
So glad! This stands up for me even now, and I loved Sneaky Pete so much ... xx
One of those rare perfect songs. It’s always been one of my favorites of yours, June. Thanks for posting it!! 🫶🏼🤘🏽😎🤘🏽🫶🏼
aint that the truth. i love how it feels like the fury is in another song and this one is just peaceful relief
This is beautiful, June - your lyrics & that Sneaky Pete pedal steel, sharing your comments & memories, and the awesome photos! If only I'd been a few years older, I would've been going to every Fanny show that I could hitch a ride to! 👍🤘
I love that!!
Just heard this today for the first time, (Christmas Eve '23). Just a fabulous piece of work, June!
Merry Christmas, June & Ann!
Thanks for posting the music, June, but also for the photos - proof that Fanny were over here in the UK! If only I’d been old enough to catch you live back then.
Beautiful song. Didn't know about her until a year or two ago and liked her immediately. 😍😍
Also, Beautiful pic of June and Richard Perry ! You both look so great there !
Thank you June for that beautiful song with relatable lyrics........and........that visual trip back to the 70's - that was a rush! Those were wonderful times for me :-)
Yes indeed, and you're so welcome. xx
that was a lovely song! Love you guys x
Very nice!
Wow! What a delightful song! And recorded at Apple Studios and Produced by Richard Perry with the help of engineer Geoff Emerick!
You know it:)) xx
I play it all the time
Good to know!! xx
@@JuneEsWorld my fav -- thanx
Love this song from the first time I heard it, 50 + years ago, and that pedal steel. Awesome. The never got the credit they deserved. That they never got into the Rock hall of Fame is pretty disgraceful.
Appreciate the sentiments! xx
Really nice early Seventies country-rock vibes.
Love you guys you need way more recognition 💕💕
❤❤Can a beautiful song I love ‼️👍
The thumbnail and the opening photograph have been taken outside Lancaster Castle. The group must have had a gig at the nearby university.
I can't really remember, but a photog was assigned to us on our last tour of "the Continent" - on te bus with us. xx
Lovely song. Enjoyed you since the early 70's..... Soooooooooooo glad you're getting recognition on youtube. Michael. PS. Been listening to Flying Burrito's & NRPS since before you {Fanny, that is.} ! LOL
I love Fanny so much, can't describe it in words. I'm not joking when i say that i'm headbanging to this song. Thanks for uploading June :)
One of the best songs ever written in all time❤❤
Love that 70's California country influence!
This is one of my favourite songs and tells my story
Who played pedal steel on this
One song I plan to record and send to you
Beautiful. I love the vocals and harmonizing. Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic, you and Sneaky Pete both!
Lovely music, lovely band.
Fell in love with Fanny in '72 whilst serving in the Royal Australian Air Force in Butterworth, Malaysia. Bought Mother's Pride and declared they are the female Beatles.
Bought Fanny Hill album a short time later, and it didn't surprise me at all that it was recorded at Abbey Road (in the number 2 studio no doubt).
Like Jack Nicholson's character, Melvin Udall, from As Good As It Gets, I feel so privileged I got to hear the greatest female band when so many didn't.
Wonderful, thanks. But actually ~ we recorded at the Beatles Apple Studio, which was just below their offices ... close, tho! (with Geoff Emerick, who was/is a master:)) xx
That's a very nice song, great sound. I enjoy all the pictures and appreciate all the info in the description.
Nice picture of you with the guitar and little tape recorder
A lot of songs that we all know are created that way
Very good sound in this recording
Love this song and the steel pedal guitar
Best wishes from Holland
One of the greatest song by June, she has all ! Thank you so much June :-x
Thank you so much. xx
@@JuneEsWorld In this song, everything sounds perfect : The tune, your lyrics, your voice, your slide guitar... The perfect song, proving that Fanny was much more than a rock band. June : you can't imagine how your music changed my life since january this year... Thank you so much for making your music alive for ever.
Wowzer! Great song. And I love the country feel to it, with the pedal steel. I guess my all time fave is still the cover/revamp of "Hey Bulldog," but I like this sort of softer (musically, not lyrically) song. Great writing. Thanks for posting.
thank you, one of my hidden faves ...
Talent and beauty what a package!!!
This song has graced the Red Dog Saloon's patrons in Long Beach, CA many, many, many times. Guilty!!!
Fantastic! Y'all were so tight.
Ya never disappoint.
:)) love that. xx
This sounds great June, good stuff.
Love this! Thanks, Jean, for putting this together and posting it!
That was great June
Love you Girls!
Holy shit! Were does a new fan at 60 start? Well 60 in 2 days lol. The sound was fantastic. Production and all that engineering bs. But the song, Jesus! I love it. I kept trying to place all the great bands that literally flooded my ears, btw I got some new kick ass noise cancelling headgear too eh, but I just tried to groove on the vibe that was pure Fanny and no one else.
love em
Great song!
Thanks! xx
Thank you :)
Love it!
What a superbly beautiful song!!!
Thank god for piano on this song ( instead of organ ). You June - your voice was like you were so pop smooth but me loving that vintage leads you played WoW! . What i want to know is if you played some longer leads in them early days because I'm pretty sure did? We are pretty lucky to have the footage we have from back then.
👍🏿✊🏿
Shit! That’s a great song! Evocative of Dead Flowers but better!
🥰😍🤩😘
Hi June. Hoping that you are well!
Aaaaahhh those light shows. 1:16
We need a repressing of the Reprise LPs, maybe a box set? Mine are well played.
Thank you so much for sharing this, the description is informative, the pictures great, but best of all the song has always been one of my favourite Fanny songs! Incidentally round about 2:36 into the song there is a faint "hey" in the mix - whose voice is it? I always listen out for it lol x
Banda maravilhosa ! ❤❤❤❤❤
nice one. how do you get so many great singers in one band
Absolute luck! Hey, you may wanna know about this for tomorrow evening, 10/21 at 7 PM EST:

Sounds like Have you ever seen the rain -CCR
Does Land of a Thousand Bridges have an audiobook version?
Are you still playing with your sister?
If you are, I would love to come play/jam with you. I'm retired so I have plenty of time. Was fortunate enough to see Fanny in the 70's.
If you click on my icon, I have one of my songs there. It was written for my grandchildren. My friend describes what I normally play as 'Heavy Surf'.
Certainly Sharon Osbourne will vote them into the R&R HoF? Who cares, they're great.
Thank you!

I thought I knew all the good bands of the 60s-70s but was happy that I had one I hadn't discovered :) Thanks to RUclips's algorithm I heard Hey Bulldog (live 1971) for the first time. Awesome stuff! Did you write all the songs?
