      @theapplepaul День назад +2

      @Low760 True, a well sorted auto can outperform a manual. It's just not as engaging. And it can't be jumpstarted by rolling the car iand then letting out the clutch in an emergency. Also, you can't slip it in and out of neutral with a clutch pedal because you don't have one. Numbers favor automatics- driving fun and control favors manuals. If a car has just stupid speed and acceleration a manual may not work. Formula One. Or most hypercars. I have driven and owned both. By both I mean auto and manuals, I have not owned or driven a Formula One or hypercar. Yet.
      My 306 hp FK8 ( Type R) is best with a manual. Which is why it only came that way.

    Good to hear, that the auto doesn‘t suck too hard. I can‘t use manuals - so there‘d be a chance for me.
    The Mk 4 was heavy, though, despite all the tech. More than 1600 kilograms with a full tank, but no driver. I had a non-turbo manual one following my 100hp Smart Roadster for an afternoon and the driver said in terms of uphill acceleration, he couldn’t claw back what he lost in corners. Power to weight in the same ballpark.

    These came out when I was of College age and into my young adulthood. The 2nd and 3rd generations of these cars were very popular and moderately priced. But this generation had that currency slip that impacted the other Japanese sports cars so there were very few in number in my area. Prices in the mid $50's was just too much for a young person to afford back then as I paid $110,000 for my first house in 1998. A few years later I was doing some work for a Mitshbishi dealer and it got much worse for the last year of the 3000GT with those prices really exploding causing a serious lot rot.

    Another factor in buying now is whether they have been modified. To find a stock car with a manual will become more difficult and costly.
    There was a YT show in the US a few years ago to test tuner cars in different conditions. There was a Supra with drag tires that developed 800 plus hp. It would spin its the tires and lose lateral stability in 3 gear when the boost kicked in.Then you had to slow it down ...

    The JDM cars were never 280bhp, that was just a gentleman's agreement between the major Japanese manufacturers, including Nissan who also quoted 280 on the RB26. The difference with the JDM engines were the use of ceramic turbines in the turbos. These spooled up faster but could delaminate at over 1 bar of boost. The export cars had steel turbines in the turbos. I've run the JZ in a Land Rover discovery with a 5 speed manual and now have one in a 1970 Jag XJ6 S1.

    You can get away with 800hp on the stock parts. That is why the Supra became a legend. Beefed up, the sky's the limit. That was in an era when it was unthinkable to modify a Ferrari or Lamborghini. Mclaren F1 had 630hp and sure it had top speed. But you COULD modify a Toyota Supra for the 200mph club. There were no Skylines in the states either, til the R35 in 09. The "not another LS build." That specific turbo prepped block wasn't in the Lexus SC300, the SC300 is not as popular.

    I'm astonished there are still unmodified versions out there!
    The driveby is a bit disappointing featuring mainly tyre noise.

    take out the secondary cat, increase boost to 1.2bar and it instantly goes to 440hp. Peak of Toyota engineering, prices have dipped especially for ones in need of TLC.

    Vehicles built in Japan have tremendous build quality, and none more so than Toyota, of course. That said, the other factors of possible import, may be comfort, style and ride quality. Most folk who own a Ferrari or Aston Martin have a sense of the ephemera in their cars, which is not available in mass market cars. . So, people seek exclusivity. Not me, however. It is reliability first, with everything else a cherry on top.

    Whoever signed off on those wheels must have had stocks in an after market wheel supplier, right?
    In general, that Supra cried out for some personalising. It's a symbol of untapped possibilities.
    Which is not a bad thing, actually. I like making things more personal. 'That's mine, as you obviously know'. Plays havoc with retail price, but I'm not in that game.

    • @Tacko14
      @Tacko14 День назад

      That's actually a nice game to play: if you had one, what would you do to it?
      Me, I think 350hp would be enough as long as it was revvy. A manual. Light LSD. Pro shocks, that's a must have. Wheels and just a bit lower rideheight. A nice sound, something close to a grA rallycar, that light, chirpy sound. After that, cosmetics. Something to make it look just a bit less smooth, it really was an egg on wheels.
      Colour? That's tough. I could go over that for days and still not know.
      And I'd loose the rearseats altogether. Just make it a two seater and lose the pretense. I always hated that 2+2 chicanery. It was just lies, but you pay for some fine leather seats anyway.

    When they took the Supra racing in Japan back in the days they still got beaten by Nissan on track so Toyota pulled out the brilliant 2JZ to replace it by (I believe ) the 3S-GT four cylinder to save weight and finally beat Nissan.
