This video helped us out so much, our driver side was rusted inside the metal tube. However we ended up losing our rear drip channel, which is a discontinued part. Luckily we found one on ebay. I took many pictures along the way to help us when putting back together. Thanks so much, for making this video. You did a wonderful job explaining and teaching. It saved us a lot of money doing it ourselves.
One morning my sunroof was stuck open. I sprayed the channel’s pretty good with PB Blaster, waiting about five minutes or less, tried to close it and it worked.
I went ahead and bought two new cables and the cable housing. Those copper looking tubes. Surprisingly the new cables came with all new hardware, complete new slide assemblies! All together and works but I think it's not programmed properly! Thanks for the vid.
Great Video! The part where the MoonRoof stops when you test ran it after change out, They are suppose to do that. I believe it’s a Safety. They all do it 😁 Just thought I would mention that.
Great job and thank you. Really only took this on after watching a number of times. I did come up with a tip/trick for removing the A Pillar grab handle screws that are glued in. I made a phillips head bit to fit in my soldering gun, heated the screw and that melted the glue making removal easy. Note, be careful obviously because of the heat, and time as it can melt or soften some of the surrounding plastic, but patience and care will get them out easily without an impact driver.
Great video!! Appreciate it, going to have to go through this, already replaced the motor on the sunroof of my sequoia and still got stuck on tilt today had to take the glass off and sprayed some lube on the track, got it to close but still seems like it's jammed found a lot of grease gunk on the worm gear of the motor most likely clogged😢.
Awesome video, man! Thanks for the help. I fully rebuilt the cables and cable tubes and sunroof is working great. However, when closing from the fully open, I’m consistently getting 2 stop points: about 1/4 closed and 1/2 closes. Also, when it’s in the tilted up position, and I click tilt down, it automatically goes into the auto open and starts sliding all the way back. Any insight on these two issues? Do I need to reset the relay or something?
Hey man, appreciate the video a lot. Mine was pretty bad and I really had to fight to get the damn worm drives out of the copper tubes. Actually broke one of the tubes cause I was pulling so hard. Got it working (doesn’t sound pretty but it works) for now. The only thing is mine stops like yours does (25:56) when I’m closing it. Were you solve it stopping? It’s not a huge deal, I just have to press the button down again to get it to close, but it would be nice to just work.
I mentioned to the video creator that all 3rd Gen 4Runners Moon Roofs Stop mid point when closing, I believe it’s a Safety Cause I own 6 4Runners and they All do it! Nothing wrong with yours
Hi, out the gate you show 8 little screws that you took out. Do they need to be taken out before the track will move (to get the worm drives out)? I do not see those screws. Sunroof is already disassembled and glass out. Does the sunroof need to be in any certain position to gain access those screws? I think its current position is closed/non-vented because the brackets that attach to glass are parallel with the whole assembly.
My cables loose ends are coated in a plastic. Not grease or rust. But I can't access the two screws to remove the other ends and can't slide the unit. I'm gonna keep working it.
Nice video man. Got a question though. Do you happen to have some pictures of the roof with the whole assembly out? Looking at mounting points mainly. I have a 99 that someone put an aftermarket sunroof and a crappy headliner job in. Got a factory headliner and realized the sunroof opening was bigger from factory than this aftermarket one.
Sorry for the delay - I checked, and no I don't have any photos. Check out some other videos of headliner removal and see if they show those mounting points better.
Did your cables have a white rubbery film on it? I noticed yours didn’t. I am trying to put it all together. I got one spring in and the other side is so difficult.
I didn’t show that, but yes that’s the common failure. The factory grease gets contaminated with dust, dirt, etc and solidifies over the years. Getting the other side out is going to tough but you may have luck yanking it out!
Yes, you can replace any parts you'd like as long as you can remove the old ones. In my case, the worm drive cables were so adhered to the inside of those tubes, I couldn't realistically replace them. It was easier for me to get a sunroof from a junk yard and take those cables out to clean and regrease to prevent them from going bad. I cover this in the video - the steps you can take to evaluate the repair needed in your own circumstances.
@@anygiventrail I'm gonna clean mine up like you did and try to get by without buying anything but just in case it's good to know replacements can be had.
Can’t thank you enough for this video. I right in the midst of this on a 97 runner. However I’ve run into a couple of snags that I hope you can advise on. First, all of those little tiny white plastic tabs are either missing or have broken off. How important do you think they are and do you think the unit will work without them? Secondly, I’m missing one of those little plastic caps you referred to. Again, can the unit live work without it? Lastly, on the very back end, one of those 3 inch black pieces that slide into the channel, that help with the lift is totally broken. There is no way I would think that any place would have that part. Any advice would be so, so greatly appreciated.
Thanks! So- little white caps - likely not a show stopper. White plastic tabs- important as a safety measure to like the sunroof motion. I believe these would be needed, or without them the sunroof would become misaligned quickly.
@@anygiventrail thanks for the response. Do you have any idea where one might get these tiny little nylon pieces, or those 2 little black pieces that elevate the rear of the lift mechanism? Thanks, again.
@@keithfagan9118 you’d have to source from either a pull yard or eBay. I can’t imagine they’re sold new any longer, but you could try talking with your local dealership
On second thought, you’re going to need those white tabs that drop down. Otherwise your entire sunroof will start to slide backward before it drops down below your roofline to clear it. It’s a sort of mechanical timer for the track.
@@anygiventrail Either I’m gonna try to get it back in place and live without a functioning sunroof or I’m driving over to Rancho Cordova, California (2 hours) to buy a used one for 500 bucks! Thanks again for your responses.
The seal is attached; I didn’t buy the glass actually, just the frame (no motor, sun shade, etc). Some pull yards charge by each individual part rather than just an assembly, so I left those behind.
I’m inclined to say yes as there doesn’t appear to be any differences in that part of the body, nor would Toyota have multiple designs for this where they could rearrange the interior controls to keep the motor in the same position. I’ll see if I can find a parts diagram for the Surf and get a better feel from that. Jealous you have (or are working on) a surf! I saw my first one in the US actually delivering rural mail in SC. The RHD was ideal 🤪
@@michaelh8854 you can do it! It looks like a lot, but it’s just a couple of screws and sliding metal pieces. If you get stuck, refer to the video or comment again and I can help

Are there 4 drain tubes, or just 2 in front? 2006 4R
There are 4 on a 3rd gen. You might want to look up a video about a 4th gen.
Hey I'm trying to take off this and on the part of the finger that hold one bolt, i did what you said but it doesn't go out
The finger? What time stamp in the video are you referring to?
Sunroof stops on closing to protect fingers from being squished. So you have to press the button a 2nd time.
