The problem is not about willingness of anyone to take part but how our elected representatives get picked to stand.
To much power is in the hands of political parties, particularly their ideologues, activists, apparatchiks and leadership.
So all you get are party insiders, to often folk utterly detached from the lived reality of most actual citizens. This is true for sometimes different reasons for the different parties but its true for all parties.
This situation is exacerbated by the FPTP system which locks out new parties who might chose to do things differently and also makes standing for parliament a personally risky thing to do if your not in a safe seat.
Imo a few simple changes to the rules are required to break the power of political parties and open up parliament to folk ordinaire.
NOTA on the ballot paper with Compulsory voting.
If NOTA votes win a seat then a candidate is elected from a list of qualified citizens who chose to put their name forward.
Qualification being stuff like not been a member of a political party for the last 10 years, no criminal convictions (perhaps with a time limit) etc.
For party candidates. Strict rules like 5 year party membership, 10 year residence in the constituency to start with. Then selection at random from all local members who choose put their name forward. (IE not selection by a committee of apparatchiks or central office dictate).
And the entire Second Chamber of an agreed number of members should be appointed for 10 years at random from members of Joe Public with 33% being replaced every 3 years.

@@duncanfyfe485 in undermining the influence of the party leadership etc. You negate also the influence of those billionaires on the leadership. The aim is to give a real chance of being an elected representative to a much wider if not the widest possible set of folk.
With that a more representative parliament the influence of those folk also goes down.
We also need better laws on media ownership (eg no foreign ownership, no individual or individual family can own more than 5% of any media platform and lobbying needs to seriously restricted.

The two Party system ( major Parties) has allowed politicians to be incompetent for decades, because they could take turns to be in power. All that does is to perpetuate incompetence and it gives the voting public scant influence. The system created an elite, many of whom are interested only in personal wealth and aggrandisement plus appeasing any minority group who’ll vote for them. The current Labour government is packed with people who probably couldn’t get or do, any job involving skills and hard work.
