Sir, I got a 0 in class six, but today I’m working in Core AI. Everything I’ve learned, I taught myself, and honestly, self-study can be incredibly challenging. I even enrolled in an online MSc in Math but had to drop out due to a lack of guidance. I’ve attended some of your lectures, and I couldn’t help but think-if I’d had a teacher like you earlier, maybe I’d be working at Google or Microsoft by now. 😅 Unfortunately, I never had the chance to work with a mentor. However, whenever an intern or junior comes to me, I make sure to explain things as clearly as possible. Recently, one of them even wished me on Teacher's Day. On that note, happy Teacher’s Day to you, sir.
when I was in my school I was really curious and math was my love even though I didn't had internet or other resource I liked to play to with number (mostly liked to find the pattens in square of a number, prime number …) and always like to go deeper in the basics of the math's, science till 9th std, after that in class 11 I joined coaching in kota for jee and it was a disaster for me, for 4months everything was excellent was within top 10 always, was always amaze by the new concept but then I was really sick for 1week and my backlogs began and I don't know why I didn't like to go to class after that. Now after two years, today, as a 1year student(joined previous month) not from any IITs(regret not studying), I am loving learning the art of math's again from your 2017 calculus of one real variable and putting effort to know more eg. Fermet's other 2 theorem. Thankyou sir for igniting the passion for math's again, its 12:30 am and I am full of energy to continue with basics of calculus.
this is my dream to have a room like this filled with mathematics history books and mathematics technical books. I want to have Mathematicians pictures on my wall room and a telescope in balcony. There is a Grear professor Prof. Mahan Maharaj. I saw him at TIFR Mumbai with bhagwa clothes dhoti and dupatta only when I went for interview there and then I read about him. He is absoultely a great legend.
Sometimes I think that how we are solving math problems aren't the right way of doing that. It may be needed to grew a deep analysis and knowledge before doing fancy problems like integrating √tanx. I am still confused with doing questions like that. But I essentially tried to learn the fundamentals. And for that reason some of my school teachers teased me that learning limit at 10th level might damage my 10th board exam. Though, I secured the highest aggregate in my school, Patha Bhavan. Sometimes the surroundings try to dominnate me. As a 12th standard student, there is always a pressure on me by my family to crack IIT and get admitted in the best in class Engineering colleges. But, when I try to solve the MCQs , it leads me that I am not learning the correct path. And also, I am also afraid of Chemistry. So, it leads me to do the problems of maths and physics in tricky way without knowing the exact knowledge. Sir, If possible please try to take a live class of Calculus of one Real Variable at least once in 2 weeks. That should always influence me for having a deep knowledge. And it will be prestigious for me for getting a chance to touch the sky of mathematics and getting live lectures from my Richard Feyman of mathematics. One thing that I may miss that, The Calculus Course is such a wonderful course that I recommended this to everyone of my batchmates who really confused with Calculus.😊😊 And at last, sir, ভালো থাকবেন আর আমরা যেন এইভাবেই সারাজীবন আপনার সংস্পর্শে থাকতে পারি এই কামনাই করি।

As a young student like you at your age I faced the same dilemma and I still tell parents that forcing young minds to do the IIT coaching is a great disservice to them because it takes away from them a very important thing..science itself. I fully agree Souvik, math is not about tricks, it is about concepts and it is about being deep. I was thrown out of the organic chemistry class at RKM Narendrapur since I said can I see the chemicals with my own eyes rather than just seeing the fearful formula. Chemistry is an experimental science and needs to be experienced and this blind writing of formulas is of no help. Richard Feynman is my scientific hero and I when I am down and unable to progress I just go back and read about him or his amazing lectures and it uplifts my spirit. Respected Professor Dutta, I have been going through your NPTEL courses on Multivariate Calculus and Mathematical/Convex Optimization in an attempt to do research in Machine Learning Theory. Your teaching style and your joy in teaching Math is truly inspiring and infectious. I am overjoyed to find your new series on Linear Algebra and Optimization for Data Science. I also am thrilled to learn how deeply you value Geometry, since as a school student I too found Geometry to be most interesting; reading books like Problems in Plane Geometry by I. F. it is the cycle of life to be getting old but i am a little bit upset to see teachers like you growing old I am happy to find you from nptel courses and follow from there to here; thank You sir ❤️❤️❤️
Hello professor! I am glad that you share such experiences with us. Looking at your channel, I can't help feel that you want to give the world what your received in good grace which is the guidance of minds in their journey (however long or short) in Mathematics. And in true evolutionary spirit, you want to move beyond what your teachers did (teach students in confined space of the universities/colleges) towards teaching for all who wish to learn - by using ICT and other technologies at your disposal. You do this at the cost of time you could spend with your growing daughter, and family - even your own intellectual or artistic pursuit. For this me and the internet community will always be thankful.
I became a fan of your teaching (and math) when I took your course on Calculus I and II via NPTEL. Your way of looking at math is beautiful and you make your students look at things in that way, starting from basics and unveiling complex ideas in the simplest manner. The way you explain proofs and ideas seems to the listener as if they invented it themself, it is so natural. I have completed my graduation in commerce and went to a school that followed the SSC board, so I never had a good math teacher (or math education). The way I studied math in the last 23 years was much different (and at a superficial level) than what math really is. But now I take problems and keep wondering about them all day, and hit the solution in the most unexpected times. I was once playing with a compounding problem when I noticed that as n gets bigger and bigger, we get closer to a constant whose value is 'e'. That was a very powerful moment for me and I realized that math is unending; it is the greatest truth in this world. Even though this realization is late in my life, I have my entire life ahead and every breathing moment to unravel the beauty of math, and that is because I once found a great teacher, which is you. Thank you for so passionately delivering your ideas to budding students. You truly own the power to change lives. I look forward to your book!
I feel very honoured and humbled at the same time. I am happy to that I played a little role in your developing a sense and love for mathematics. Do let me know if I can be of any help in the future for your mathematical learning.
@@kamrupexpress It is an honor to receive your reply, as it is to be your student. Your book suggestions have been very helpful to me (I did not understand many parts at first but I realized that if I think about a problem for long enough, the solution becomes clear). I will definitely mail you if needed, I appreciate your offer to help, it is very kind!
Hii sir, i am currently pursuing research in operations management, from a very reputed institute ...and trust me I am a big fan of yours, i have already watched your NPTEL lectures... I feel really sorry that in my BTech from one of the NITs, I wasn't taught the way to teach.... someday after my PhD I would love to meet you sir at your convenience. Thanks for contributing selflessly.
Sir, thanks for sharing your math story.I want to say their are lot of common elements in our story, like 8th class ,two week from exam, difficulty in factors, and to getting highest marks.Like suddenly a mechanic appear in form of teacher and he tightened a screw and everything work finely.Such a overwhelming experience!
My math is very bad, it takes me a whole day to do one question of jee advanced but I don't get upset, I love mathematics , numbers are like personalities to me, and btw this is coming from a mentally challenged person, but I'm not going to give up
Thank you so much sir I has completed your one and multi both. I am Grateful to you for teaching calculus with full of fun and great ideas and techniques. After watching your videos i feel very positive and energetic😊 Thank You sooo much sir🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😊
thankyou sir for your words. I don't know whether my story you might read or not. It was class 12th preboard (2014,) I got failed in maths exam and in CBSE there were 6 questions of 6 marks at the end. I got 32 out of hundred and it was 32 out of 36 indirectly. In class when sheets were distributed, my teacher (respected Ashok Sonavne sir), told the whole class that this fool failed in maths, but did a question correct which 39 other students didn't even attempted it.
Thank you prof Joydeep sir for such an insightful story, you too are transforming lives much like all your professors did who taught you and helped you in this remarkable jorney of yours in becoming such a profound mathematician. Thank you for everything.
05:58 What, how and why things changed due to the story telling sessions about Euclid by your teacher? How could you suddenly make sense of shapes? Was it easier to understand tangible shapes/geometry than abstract notation of algebra? Was it because you're a top down learner that needed to know the overall concept to be able to make sense of the forest of details? Recently I got the same experience after understanding the insights behind Calculus and see them while decoding the notation of the formulas. I could suddenly perceive what the overall pattern was and what was incidental to the particular problem.
@@kamrupexpress if we can figure out *why* such transformations happen it can mean so much in helping students avoid/overcome fear of maths by matching the learning method with the teaching method. Mismatch in learning/teaching methods may be the number one reason for high aversion to maths in schools. "A Mind for Numbers" by Barbara Oakley talks about how new techniques from cognitive science are helping people learn maths/science in a more tuned way. For me I need more overall map of the topic to act as the compass while navigating through the forest of math. Details are disorienting without a way to reorient myself to the overall picture. This is top down way of learning. However throughout school details was all I was taught (bottom up way of teaching) without the overview of what exactly was the aim/goal. In college however I had the freedom to learn and think through the subject on my own.
Respected sir, I enrolled in some of your courses in NPTEL. The lectures were excellent. There, I came to know about the book "Numbers Rational and Irrational"- by Ivan Niven. That book and the cover photo are really excellent. I have seen you always mentioning good books. At around 9:50 of this video, you mentioned a book. Can you please write the name and the author of the book in reply to this comment? Thank you. Yours sincerely.
@@kamrupexpress Thank you so much sir, for your reply. Actually I want to know the name and the author's name ( the book on Analysis) you mentioned around 9:50 of this video. Thank you sir. Yours faithfully. Arijit
Dear sir, are the books by Sir Thomas Heath on Archimedes, Appolonius and Diophantus great? Will you recommend reading those books after completing Euclid's Elements?

Sir , hello...I came to know about NPTEL and from there about you. I was an average student ,and after 12th I took BSc Physics because I was good at physcis , it was a subject in which I was interested.. and one more thing is I didnt understand Calculus in 12th so I got 007 marks in Maths in me boards then took compartments exam to somehow pass in mathematics. But due to some personal issues I left thorough study completely, here in Jharkhand no professors teach in colleges , nothing is being taught so I left though that I will pass someway cheating here and there or someway. But I don't feel good, my inner self has been feeling unwell due to this. So this year I decided I will start studying seriously ...so I stated looking for resources to complete my graduation course of 3years in 15months (June2022)...So I need to Understand calculus for better command at physics. Where should I start ? Where will I find more resources? And what should be my approach. Need to do good at mathematics so that I get good command at physics. Kindly help. Also is there some other way to contact you. 😶 I am lost.
I did masters in math from IIT Kharagpur. No Pure or applied tag was there. I took a mixed bag of courses. In my heart I am a pure mathematician and by profession an applied mathematics. Professor, There is something wrong with academics in the states at the moment; a form moral of decay and sickness going around, my generation filled with rage and anger about their case in the world. Feeling helpless because thats the only option we are taught. That equality is necessary, yet a “right of passage” is seen as unequal. Sometimes even feels targeting and ostracizing. The states is going backwards due to the idea of fairness and its even infecting the departments of mathematics in some colleges. Yet, the idea of hope and inspiration is seen as something that no one can take up. My wise teacher, I’m letting you know that, your words not also learn me to feel strong, but encourages me to demonstrate and affirm my situation at the moment. Because nothing in life is given and this includes the mark of a truly educated person. When I say that the most virtuous human being inspires others to follow that same path; I truly mean it, to say you are one virtuous individual. And if life was a theorem and the proof existed to explain the reasoning behind it. Sincerely, I would say that you have demonstrated how to live one with passion and accuracy. Hope to see a lot more uploads of your take on life or wisdom. My Very Best, Arroyo, Andres

I will definitely mail you if needed, I appreciate your offer to help, it is very kind!

thankyou sir for your words.

Oh wow awesome sir
Very Eagerly waiting for your Book "Coffee time with Euclid"
When will You going to publish it sir ...?
Good day sir, sir can you please make videos on how to increase problem solving skills & proof writing skills in math for undergrad students?
nice sir....keep bringing such content...
It is very difficult to say why such feelings happen...but they do...our brain is a wonderful object.

Sir I have doubt, which one you have done in masters , 'applied' or "pure "mathematics
I did masters in math from IIT Kharagpur. No Pure or applied tag was there. I took a mixed bag of courses. In my heart I am a pure mathematician and by profession an applied mathematics. In research I work on the theory and algorithms of optimization. Outside my research the thing that I am deeply interested to know more about is mechanics which I loved since my undergraduate days and geometry my first love.
A correction. It should be applied mathematician..

Mathematics is mathematics. Even if choose applied math you need to be strong in linear algebra, functional analysis and topology. The same three will be required if you do pure math.

The whole of the world has advanced because science and technology and that depends heavily on math. Does life really have any purpose. Professor,
There is something wrong with academics in the states at the moment; a form moral of decay and sickness going around, my generation filled with rage and anger about their case in the world.
My Very Best,
Arroyo, Andres
Just know that thought of your teachers live on with you. Their legacy stays forever because its passed on from you to young men like me. And it goes on and this legacy will continue. And through your words, the embodiment of your thoughts continues in the real world.
