========= Hellfighters LYRICS ==========
From a land across the ocean, to the western front where they served
Fought with courage and devotion, preconceptions turned
As the spring offensive kept churning, where the men would earn their name
See the tides of battle turning, and their foes ignite their flame
Hear the toll of the bell, kept fighting for six months in hell
As the war rages on, they fight at the edge of the Argonne
Hear the toll of the bell, over six months in hell
Out of the trenches they came
As the war rages on, at the edge of the Argonne
Hellfighters earning their name
They would have no prisoners taken, and they never lost any ground
Earned the cross of war unshaken, never turned around
As the armistice is drawing closer, the 369th
Kept on fighting until it was over, and they were first to reach the Rhine
========= Historic Fact ==========
In 1918, the Harlem Hellfighters were assigned to fight in WW1 alongside the French army. This regiment was mainly made up of African American soldiers, and they were not allowed to fight alongside the ordinary American soldiers.

Song about Battle of Kosovo 1389? 🇷🇸❤🔥
Song about Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, Ph.D, and the 20th Maine during the Battle of Gettysburg(BAYONETS!!!!) or maybe a song about the 1981 IRA/INLA hunger strike. Both are very interesting topics much your audience may not be familiar with. Thnks for teaching me about Brazil's WWII involvement and the Swedish Empire. I have a history degree and knew nothing about Brazil during The War and very little after Gustavus Adolphus and the 30 Years War.
If you are short of ideas for a song maybe look into the Shetland bus operation, this was run from Shetland to for example Norway to evacuate people and take them out and away from those occupied countries

@@lukapavlovic2253 I agree with with a song about the Battle of Kosovo, but we also need one about the Fall of Constantinople and when the Crusade of Varna finally ended at the 2nd Battle of Kosovo.
I like the return to a bit of a heavier sound after the recent stuff. Not that I didn't like Truce, but I can't really play that at full blast in my car rushing down the interstate.
I think its the theme for this album
I definitely agree, this reminds me of coat of arms / the art of war and I love that

I’m still hoping they make a song about the Redtails or Alan Turing.
Subjected to racism, almost un-recognized by the country that they fought for, but still they battled it out in what was hell on earth to secure victory. Earning fame and respect across the world. Long live the Harlem Hellfighters!
And laid the foundation for that to change same within world war II I think there was a tank battalion that was a segregated squadron of Sherman's that saved the squadron's ass unfortunately at the cost of their own lives but pretty sure the other tank commander tried to get them recognized at the time for a medal of honor unfortunately it was denied because of racist b*******at least I think that was the gist of the event but can't quite recall the details might be off

What I think I love most about "Hellfighters" is that it doesn't focus on the Hellfighters' race. It focuses on their deeds, and trusts the listener to go and learn about them after. This is how a song like this should be done.
They, of course, weren't so fortunate to be able to do so themselves. They fought for the nation, and returned to the same discrimination and mistreatment their parents had, and their kids and grandkids would face basically the same for decades more before the US even started to give them a resemblance of equality, much less make amends for past wrongs.
thats actually a cold reality to not only black soldiers. a lot of soldiers are discarded after wars, this was true even in roman times were conquering legionaries came back and were broke ,barely able to feed themselves let alone their family . still true today , the slight difference in rome they could turn to their general who paid them and the general had their loyalty not the state. thats probably why it was so much buried and the Americans only partially made black people soldiers because disgruntled soldiers isnt Something you wanna play with

I am the great-grandson of a Hellfighter. Thank you for this.
You got warrior blood br proud
As a Soldier of the Army National Guard, and a Trooper in the US Cav I couldn't admire anyone more then the Harlem Hellfighters who faced a segregated army and still managed to not only fight and win, but to survive with little to no respect or logistical support from the US army. They were only recognized by the French army after being adopted and equipped with French Equipment. Yet, facing so much other than life on the front line, they were the most feared amongst the germans. And THAT was a national guard unit.
"This We'll Defend"
I just noticed this; Stormtroopers has "Out of the trenches/the stormtroopers rise" and this song has "Out of the trenches they came". Like, two of the more aggressive WW1 soldiers BOTH rose out of the trenches. Has anyone else noticed that detail?
Wow, it's almost like WW1 was all about trenches.
One of the most ignored group of heroes of the first world war. A battalion that fought harder and more devoted than most others for cause they had no need to fight for. Only to be ignored and shunned upon return. What God damn perfect song to immortalise the Harlem Hellfighters in our current day.
Fun fact when they first got back black soldiers were actually met with decent respect even in the south. They sadly do get forgot about.
Everybody remembers the Harlem Hellfighters
@@truereaper4572 thanks to Battlefield 1
@@warmike yeah, after BF1, the Hellfighters and the Russian Women's Battalion are nowhere near ignored.
They're comparably pretty well remembered in Germany. If you know a bit of ww1 here you heard of them.
They only sad part about the Harlem Hellfighters Despite their courage, sacrifice and dedication to their country, they returned home to face racism and segregation from their fellow countrymen.
Which is why it is ESSENTIAL to repeat their story. What they and the 442nd did are the truest examples of patriotism in American history. They fought for a country that despised them, they answered a call that they had no business receiving. Yet they fought every bit as hard (if not harder) than their white countrymen, proving (even though they shouldn't have had to) that they believe in the core values of this nation. Through their bravery they show what courage really means. Not just courage on the battlefield, but the courage to be dedicated to ideals that were not being reflected in the society in which they lived. By repeating their story, we reaffirm the value of the price they paid to shout to all the world "I AM AN AMERICAN".
@@mileshill7196 Please quit pretending everyone in the US was a Democrat. Wilson got 49% of the vote, not 100%.
@@mileshill7196 Let that be a message to Black Americans on how we reward patriotism. I respect them for giving Black folks like myself an image of strength and resilience to look up to and showing that to image to the world. As much as I am against leaving my homeland, seeing how those who returned were abandoned, abused, and lynched makes me wish more Hellfighters claimed their happy endings in France. Those brothers deserved it.
@@0mg1tsbatman87Private Henry Johnson actually did get some respect after his death. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. However, I am a bit angry that the Army didn’t tell his family that they had done that and let them believe he had been buried in a Pauper’s Grave.

The Harlem Hellfighters, absolutely indomitable.
I love how you don’t focus on the fact that they were black, you focus on how badass they were.
While a great song, it's not a good way to look at their story. They were badass through and through, all the more so because of what they overcame, and knew they'd have to face once they returned home. Their children and Grandchildren would continue to face blatant racism despite ancestors like the Hell Fighters and countless other examples giving their country their very lives.
They themselves would probably have something to say to the contrary.
There were other ethnicities in the 369th. Puerto Ricans for example.
@@Joesolo13 Problem is that the unit also consisted of other nationalities.
If ever a movie should be made it should be about the 369th. Their motto was "Don't tread on me, Goddamn, let's go"
Sabaton is great to listen to in any state. I had a couple drinks and am feeling pretty good. What's good about new songs is that you can bounce around from song to song and keep coming to the ones you've previously listened because you've already forgotten how they go. Needless to say I think my neighbors hate me right now, but they getting educated now... those uncivilized swine.
I have listened to sabaton every day on my drive to work for around two years now. My brother who often rides with me (we work at the same place on different schedules) doesn't know how I'm not tired of it by now 😂
The 369th Harlem Hellfighters, shipped out as a token force to aid the French army against the German Empire. The US gov't expected them to get wiped out, ridding them of an annoying wild hair...and yet these boys were some of the toughest, bravest, and most dedicated combatants to ever see a battlefield. They earnt great respect from the French for their valor, and the bond was such that the 369th took to wearing French Adrian helmets instead of the issue Brodie kettlehat, as a sign of unity with their poilú brothers in arms. Truly one of the most inspiring tales from the First War.
That intro, damn, I think this just over took Christmas Truce for me. Such a good album. I love you guys, Sabaton, you are a wonderful break from repetitive cgi modern music!
Great song. Henry Johnson who was a member of this unit received the Medal of Honor for his actions one night
near the Argonne. The story of what he did that night is legendary and quite frankly being nicknamed The Black Death
is pretty epic. In my estimation one could consider him an unkillable soldier.
there's only one unkillable soldier
Funny enough, he was a man who died destitute because of an error on his discharge papers failing to report injuries that he received his Purple Heart for. Granted said Purple Heart was given posthumously by President Bill Clinton. He then received a posthumous Distinguished Service Cross upon discovery of his burial place in Arlington National Cemetery. And it has recently been discovered that General John Pershing provided a Chain-of-Command endorsement, presumably for a Medal of Honor, given what Charles Schumer said in front of a statue of Johnson in Albany.
Originally I just wanted to make the joke that the unkillable soldier, the white death, and the black death all died peacefully, and then on the Smithsonian Magazine website I found an article that mentions all four facts I mentioned in my post.
@@brianlance8263 Lastly on Mr. Johnson. He definitely deserved a better fate and definitely deserved to be treated
much better but sadly our society at that time was not very forward thinking then again have we made much progress.
he got his Purple Heart 78 years too late, and his Medal of Honor came 97 years too late
While the Army neglected to tell his family, he actually did receive some respect when they buried him with full military honors. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC.
This is my favorite Sabaton song since Devil Dogs.
