Really enjoyed this excellent presentation on the 701..Thank you Matt. Very much rekindles my interest to get my new old 701 finished up and flying. What a great airplane.
Congrats Matt! Good Looking Bird ... I'm also a 701 Owner (3rd Owner built in 1991 here in Ontario) original engine was an 80hp Rotax which I've swapped out for an almost new 100hp Rotax ... she gets up in a hurry and cruises at 85-90 mph. Enjoy!
What takeoff performance are you seeing with the 100hp? How much better is it than the 80hp? I’m currently pricing up my options and leaning towards the 701 with a Rotax. Cheers!
Wow, that was exciting. Congratulations on your new plane. I am impressed. Been waiting for your new video and it was great. 104 people beat me to it, but what the heck. Thanks for all the work you do to bring us great videos... Bill from Kentucky.
Congratulations Matt. You'll love the 701. I moved from a Challenger to a 701 a couple of years ago and it's been great. BTW, the offset in your flatirons is to provide washout. Simple but effective. Love your videos. Enjoy and stay safe.
Congratulations, really happy for you. I really enjoy flying my 701 and 750 in Xplane11, maybe someday I'll get a chance to ride in the real thing, hope so, enjoy your new plane while we ride along! thanks for the videos
Wow Matt that's awesome! I didn't expect to see this when I woke up this morning! Very happy for you it's enclosed and has a heater! Now I'll be warmer as I fly around vicariously with you. Looking forward to that!
Congratulations Matt, I owned a continental powered 701 for about 8 yrs. I quite enjoyed it and wish that I hadn't sold it. I was fortunate enough to ferry a 912 701 from Ottawa to London area too and build a bit of air time on it. Definitely one of my all time favorite planes
Wonderful that's such a nice plane; I have learned flying and still fly an European "copy" of this plane (an ICP Savannah) ! Have a nice day, can't wait to see your upcoming vids !
Great planes with several engine options the flying farming built one called the super 701 he does some crazy stuff in it can’t wait for more videos and hopefully you could fly down to zenith when they have there fly in at Mexico Missouri
Matt!!!!! That is wonderful. Please please give us all the info and details. CABIN HEAT!!!!! Yes! (Dont forget your co detector). Looking forward to your videos.
Excellent choice Matt! I'm happy for you - i land at the Mexico, MO airport every year where the Zenith factory is. Shoot, I think you could do some cross country with this one - c'mon over to the States some time if you get a chance (--o--)
Congrats Matt! 👍 Looking forward to seeing your new adventures in the 701. Owned one, loved it, they are super capable. Flew ours from Florida to BC. It was "7 oh slow", but what a way to see the country!
I find it very interesting that you happened to pick this aircraft up while I’ve been following your channel. I’m seriously contemplating getting an LSA this year. The 701 is one aircraft I’ve been taking a close look at. I’m glad you got one as I can now take a closer look at one, through your channel. I’m very much looking forward to seeing your adventures in this one and what you find.
I will try to share as much as I can about it for you. :-) First bit of advice, don't get one with a Jabiru! lol They are great engines but they're just not suited for STOL operations.
Congratulations on the CH701! I heard that some builders in South America added 16 inches of wingspan on each wing and left the slats off. That gave them the same performance of having slats plus more speed and the airplane flew with the nose at a lower attitude. Looking fwd to warmer weather so you can film with the wheels on the 701.
Matt, congrats dude. That is a whicked plane. Had a chance to fly the ICP Savannah last year with a 912uls, and all i can say is the giggle factor is ridiculous. Can fly crazy slow, and has an insane rate of climb. Love the Big bush tires for off-airport adventures. Wasnt a fan of the split center stick, im 6’2” so my legs interfered with the controls.
We’re building an 801. That aileron split you observe is the clever way Zenith got a “dihedral” effect into a wing that is otherwise straight, flat, and easy to build. 👍 Nice plane!!
Congrats, Sir! Nice piece of Machinery!!!! Put some bush wheels on that booger this spring and you can go anywhere!!!! We got a lot of good area for ultralight here in South Carolina but I don't see anything happening. Take care! 😎👍👍👍

As I know they are called "Junkers flaperons" . Some days ago my wife and I started to build our CH 701. We wish you a lot of fun and luck in your new CH 701 👍
If I remember right when I built one years ago the split in the ailerons is how they set the washout of the wing. The wing is built on a flat surface instead of having to build it with one outer corner up a certain amount to introduce washout so at the split there is a certain measurement for the offset to make the washout.
That's my current understanding of it too but I'm still trying to wrap my head around the physics of it. lol I get it... but then the way I "get it" contradicts what I understand about flaps. Once I get it figured out, I plan to do a video on how it works.
I believe Junkers of Germany pioneered this type of flaperons in the inter-war years, the best-known version being the Junkers JU52. I have always heard them referred to as Junkers-type ailerons. The infamous Stuka JU87 dive bomber also had them. Like all large-wing, low wing-load aircraft this is a "rudder airplane", i.e. the rudder is very effective and has similar or even more roll authority than the ailerons - side-slipping these things is interesting and very effective. It changes glide ratio into that of a grand piano - with the lid closed! This takes some getting used to and is great - once you get used to it. With it's light weight, once you return to coordinated flight, the sink stops INSTANTLY. Very handy for landing over obstacles, but be sure to practice a LOT at altitude before you start slipping to within 10-20 feet off the ground. Whenever you want to bank quickly, use some accompanying rudder. The roll rate (usually rather lackluster on this type of aircraft) becomes rather impressive. PS. If you want to become familiar with the minimum-speed attitude and behavior of your aircraft in ground effect, do some ultra-slow passes over the runway at 1-2 feet, struggling to keep it just airborne. You WILL touch down now and then, but you will become thoroughly familiar with this part of the flight envelope.
Very nice. For a transponder, give serious consideration to the UAvionics Tail Beacon. It's Mode S and ADS-B that will meet Canadian requirements in the future.. You would have to put the UAvionics EFIS, or something like the GRT SportEX EFIS to control it. But Hey, that's all for the future. Drop me a line if you have questions on the SportEX. I've installed 2 of them now. Sweet new toy, look forward to seeing your new adventures in it. Cheers from Winnipeg.
2:58 Notice the angle of attack of the inboard portion of flaperon is greater than the outboard section. This design feature will mean the inboard portion will stall first, thus giving a warning, before the aileron portion has stalled.
Lovely little craft and beautiful flying. As a pilot here in Australia, I wonder how much harder it is to judge the flare on snow. You obviously find it easy but for me - I'm not so sure! Cheers and congrats - Dave
It all depends on the light. In direct sunlight, it's no problem at all. But on an overcast day, it's very much like a glassy water landing for seaplane pilots. You just set up for a minimum sink rate and wait until you hit the ground.
@@mmatt Gotcha and thanks for the insight. The strategy of minimum sink rate and waiting no doubt works best on very large landing areas. 🙂 I forgot to add a thanks for the effort you put into making your content. I know how much goes into it and it's a real labour of love! Cheers again - Dave
Congratulations on being the first person to upload anything close to a "review" of the 701! For some reason there are tons of videos of these flying but no one talks about them in the slightest. You go boy! By the way, I dug around and looked for what kind of ailerons those were, and couldn't find any specific design name for them. They do look like the ailerons on the Feiseler Storch. I'm almost done my license as the building inspired me to get it. lol Where abouts in Canada are you ? I'm in BC. Would love to ride and see one in person. Also for the video I think if you did a voice over after with a phone recorder or something honestly it would be sweet. I love the flying footage you got though. How hard was learning ski's
I'm in NB, pretty much as far away from you as I could possibly be and still be in Canada. lol I will absolutely take you up for a flight if you ever find yourself in my neck of the woods. :-) Learning skis is easy. Easier than wheels in my opinion.
Hey Matt…..great choice. I have a 601HD with a 80hp Rotax in it. It really gets up and goes, unfortunately the wheel set up is not too compatible with off strip flying. I am happy with the 601 but truth be told I wish I would have chosen the 701. Also “Basic ultralight” my understanding is you can’t carry pax in a basic, unless it’s another pilot. I think been an instructor there may be a let, but doesn’t the plane have to be an advanced ultra light to carry out instruction on it? Asking because I really don’t know……I had the opportunity to buy a couple of different 701’s last year but decided against because they were registered basic. Maybe I made a mistake…….they’re definitely cheaper to buy when registered as a basic. Anyway….big fan! Can’t wait for more videos!
Basic ultralights are approved for instruction as long as one of the pilot's hold an instructor rating. As an instructor, having a Basic UL makes no difference to me as all of my passengers receive some sort of training on every flight. :-)
I just can not handle the center stick, I would have to find a workaround for that. It's just a feel thing if you know what I mean, other then that the Zenith is a good flying machine,
Dual sticks are an option. I like the centre stick though. I didn't think I would until I tried it but I got used to it really fast and don't mind it at all. Plus it makes getting in and out much easier. lol
Oh yes, it's very light on the controls yet not twitchy at all. The rudder is a bit weird where it doesn't want to re-center after you move it but that's easy to get used to. It's actually a useful feature because you don't need a trim tab on it; just set it and forget it. Lol
Really enjoyed this excellent presentation on the 701..Thank you Matt.

Also for the video I think if you did a voice over after with a phone recorder or something honestly it would be sweet. I love the flying footage you got though. How hard was learning ski's
I'm in NB, pretty much as far away from you as I could possibly be and still be in Canada. lol
I will absolutely take you up for a flight if you ever find yourself in my neck of the woods. :-)
Learning skis is easy. Easier than wheels in my opinion.
Haha yep definitely opposite sides lol 😂 I started flying on floats so I would imagine it’s similar like doing so fields.
Figured something like that……thanks for the reply!
Are you also a rec pilot or ppl instructor as well?
@@wade4652 I am a commercial pilot with a flight instructor rating.
Plus it makes getting in and out much easier. lol
Fantastic!
That's awesome but, but what about the X-air Hauman??!
That's Brent's plane actually, not mine. I just fly it. :-)
Does the 701 have a good control feel? Is it a fun plane to fly?
Oh yes, it's very light on the controls yet not twitchy at all. The rudder is a bit weird where it doesn't want to re-center after you move it but that's easy to get used to. It's actually a useful feature because you don't need a trim tab on it; just set it and forget it. Lol
Was importing into canada a huge deal?
I didn't import it but from what I understand, it's not hard at all.
