I believe that you would do well playing legends Arceus it has much more of an adventure game with hiding in the grass using items to lure Pokemon and minimal fighting if you really want to.
This was me to a tee, I love Pokemon, but as an idea. I never super got into the main series games like my brother did, dropping off the entire IP from gen 5, only picking up the IP again until now. I've wondered for years why I loved all of the Spin-off titles, Mystery Dungeon, Ranger, Conquest, Pokepark, Rumble, all of it, but never the main line games. Only a few months ago, I realized, I don't want to be a Pokemon trainer. It just doesn't interest me. I'd rather imagine everything else I could do in the Pokemon world, without being a trainer. I still claim I'm a fan, despite never finishing a single main-line Pokemon game.
I relate, i WANT to like it but its just not an rpg thats that good in my opinion (it's too shallow in gameplay and the stories arn't that good). I'd rather play something like persona, digimon or final fantasy. But i'd always have memories of enjoying rumble blast and mystery dungeon unlike the mainline.
@@theluminousone5883 I read your comment and was just about to recommend Persona but you mentioned it yourself. Don't sleep on the Shin Megami Tensai series, either. It's the original 'creature collecting' series that started it all and Persona is a spin off.
@@sausagesausage i beat Smt4. And own the other 3ds games. (I actually perfer it to persona because i dont really like the life-sim elements) I just didnt want to mention it because it would seem "edgy" or possibly too niche. but what i like about smt is that it has basically everything pokemon lacked for me. -theres a sense of both difficulty in the gameplay and Stakes in the story (and the bad guys arnt these incompetent crooks) -the battle system isnt generic and requires you to think about passing turns, using criticals/weaknesses, buffs and debuffs etc (meanwhile in pokemon you can just use your starter and exp share for most of the game.) -its one of the only creature collection games that hasnt fallen to the wayside and is a darker take on the genre. And many other things. Including the fact that the games and the other spinoffs are more varied than pokemon and the fact that atlus cares about the end product because unlike pokemon they arn't seemingly to big to fail. (Smt4:Apocalypse and Tms:FE are the exeptions.) Thanks though!
I think one part of Pokémon that you’d enjoy is the Adventures manga, a pretty underrated aspect of the series overall. It takes a much darker approach to the series while still having the same Pokémon vibe the main series has. It’s great for audiences that are a bit older and want a new perspective to Pokémon
@@kirbyfazendoummoonwalk9214 Yeah, That's the thing, even as a fan it can get really repetitive and its something that you either quickly love, or quickly hate. If you're using things like emulators or mods you could try and use cheats to "Skip the dungeon crawling"
@@theluminousone5883 Plus the game can be kinda unforgiving with death, taking away half of your items if you die, so you better hope you're the right level or have enough items for when the game forces you to go through potentially multiple dungeons back to back so you can't necessarily go back and grind. Just my personal experience though.

My interest in the franchise died due to timing. I had just caught all 150 pokemon in Red/Blue (Mew doesn't count), and was very disappointed by getting a reward of some lame certificate in the game. MERE DAYS after that I saw a commercial going on about new Pokemon to catch in the upcoming Gen 2. All I could think to myself is that it was never going to end and wasn't worth the trouble anymore. I was certainly right to assume it was never going to end :p
My first Pokemon game was Yellow. Having watched the anime, I used to be super excited to turn on my Purple Gameboy and go on adventures with my very own Pikachu. I even had a stuffed Pikachu plush that I adored.

I saw that game on th shelf. I wanted to try it out so baaad. But I hated the Wii so much x.x I practically skipped the Wii for the wiiu, and forgot to get it.
Diamond and Pearl was a falling away point for a lot of fans, honestly. But you can be a Pokemon fan without playing the main games. My nieces started out with the TCG and plushies, but have since moved up to the core games. As for you, if playing the main games is really something you want to do, I suggest you do as follows: 1: When possible, play the region's 3rd game or a remake to better enjoy the new region. This is so you can benefit from new story elements, features, or in the case of Kanto, playing the remake means you don't have to worry about your box being full and being unable to catch anymore Pokemon. However, there are some distinct differences between Ruby and Omega Ruby, so I don't blame you for using playing the original. 2: For Black and White, you have to play their respective sequel. This is because the sequel to Black has White's box Legendary. There are other reasons as well, but that's the one that matters to me. 3: Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon are better than Sun & Moon. The only reason to get Sun & Moon is for Zygarde. 4: Don't play alone. Most of the fun from the early days of Pokemon came from trades and battles between friends. And as one final note, if you plan to play the physical games, keep in mind that the batteries in the cartridges may need to be replaced. The games are old, after all. Ones with an internal clock have their batteries die much faster as well. By the way, you should look into modding that smashed Game Boy if all that's wrong with it is the screen.
@Rafa7034 Notice I said "a falling away point", implying that there were multiple times that Game Freak lost a chunk of their audience. A number of people also fell away before Gen 3. I didn't even know the GBA games were out until I saw it on a shelf. I bought Sapphire, which is odd because I was a day 1 buyer of Pokemon Silver and a Pokemon Pikachu 2. I still play the games because I enjoy training Pokemon. I miss trading and battling friends, but I think things are finally close enough that I can at least try to battle friends online.
I miss the old pokemon songs, especially the tracks from Pokemon Kareokemon, nowadays the localization doesnt even rlly bother to do a hit anime theme, smh
FOAF: I'm going to beat Pokémon Ruby Steven Stone: *cackling in the distance* (also I recommend Omega Ruby because there's a new post-game story where you can catch Rayquaza)

Thank you for continuing to make videos I appreciate your content greatly. Oh I forgot my dad got me and my sister into the card game when it first came out. Haven't really got into them at all since.
Just because somebody objects to criticism (not specifically talking about the topic at hand, I don’t even disagree with it) doesn’t mean they think the thing they like is perfect. “Criticism = hatred” is not the result of “toxic fandoms” (which don’t exist), it’s part of capitalist culture that indoctrinates us from youth and encourages blind loyalty. Also, be sympathetic to people who are afraid to criticize what they like, it may be something with a special meaning that they don’t want to let go of.
@@diamondminer5459 he didn't finish even ONE of the games! He only played the first ones as a kid and couldn't complete it ( i don't blame him because i had the same problem. You saying that misty liking ash wasn’t canon, tells me that you don’t remember the episode where she chose to support ash over a guy that she thought was a perfect person to date, confirming that she realized her affection to ash. And the dude doesn’t finds out at all. The guys that wanted to date misty then loses the battle and says that ash is a lucky man for having misty and ash is just dumbfounded. This shit stayed with me and was like “wait, what does that mean? What!?”
Oddly enough the main Pokémon games is the only part of the series i still get excited about. I haven’t followed the anime since the end of diamond and pearl series and the side games were interesting up until the wii . It’s great to hear the thought of other players of the series. Keep up the great videos.
YEAAAHH POKEMON SNAP, I'm so amazed, litterly two weeks ago I told my friends that it was my first pokemon game and they didn't knew it and thaught I was crazy for not playing the main games. But I guess I'm not crazy at all :)
I never really collected the cards, the only card I really remember was a kinda rare card I found on a playground floor. My friend told me that is was super rare, and maybe even worth £100 (I'm British), when I got home and researched it, it was worth about 8 quid, and it was damaged, so about £3. I still have it taped to my door.
I feel you FoaF, I too have never been able to finish a pokemon game. Though in my defence, I did make it to the pokemon league in pokemon emerald, but for the life of me I could never beat the champion. That guy's grass and water types straight up nuked my team with their poison attacks, even when I had the big legendary Rayuquaza on my team! (I'm really sad they never did a remake of the middle of the road games like emerald or crystal because those are the ones with legendaries I actually want.) I think one reason I'm so off and on with these monster catching/battle games myself is the character designs. That's probably why I've been more invested with the Nexomon series that was made by an indie developer; they just have cooler looking monsters. I'll admit, there are still a handful of pokemon I will always find cool, (Sceptile fan for life!) but Nexomon just has a bigger cool to uncool ratio than pokemon does nowadays. Plus the parents and friends of your playable character are way more fleshed out and actually have sever impact on the plot itself; and there's also a crime fighting team of super sentai lookalikes.
6:05 ACKHCHUALLY, I clearly remember that they liking each other romantically but not confessing their feelings was something that was teased very often in the show, and while not explicitly stated, it was very clear that Misty was infatuated with Ash. So...

@@mr.redguard6702 From what I could find, granted I don't have the sources at this time, canonically the series was supposed to end after red and blue. Indigo league was the one and only season for Pokemon. After the huge success, they decided to milk the series for another 25 years so Misty and Ash getting married was retconned away.
The frist time I played pokemon, I was in like 5th or 6th grade and started with diamond pearl and heart gold soul silver. Yet my faviorte pokemom game is saphire (on my brothers game boy)
I love how I don't even need the music or sound effects put into it the video, I can just look at the images and instantly it plays in my head... God they were great games back in the day. Anyone else?
This strikes incredibly close to home. Gen 3 was the last gen i played/cared about as a kid, and i basically didn't think about pokemon again until the 20th anniversary/sun and moon hype train pulled up. It was realy weird rediscovering this thing that I know i super loved as a kid, but somehow completely forgot about. Im glad i did, Iove it again but it also makes me feel a little weird/sad thinking about how many other things or people that were important to me once have I also forgotten about? If i could have forgotten something as big as pokemon, who knows what else might have slipped away.
I've always preferred the Pokémon themselves, rather than the games, although sometimes I went through phases of loving the games the the exclusion of everything else.
This is a really great video, I found myself relating to your thoughts quite a bit actually. I am a huge fan of Pokémon and love the main games, but they were never the focus. It could be nostalgia now (I don’t think I’ll ever have nostalgia for swsh) but I don’t honestly know why I love Pokémon. I guess it’s just Pokémon itself.

@@theluminousone5883 And that's perfectly alright! we all have opinions and no one deserved to be attacked for their own.
(I actually perfer it to persona because i dont really like the life-sim elements)
I just didnt want to mention it because it would seem "edgy" or possibly too niche.
but what i like about smt is that it has basically everything pokemon lacked for me.
-theres a sense of both difficulty in the gameplay and Stakes in the story (and the bad guys arnt these incompetent crooks)
-the battle system isnt generic and requires you to think about passing turns, using criticals/weaknesses, buffs and debuffs etc (meanwhile in pokemon you can just use your starter and exp share for most of the game.)
-its one of the only creature collection games that hasnt fallen to the wayside and is a darker take on the genre.
And many other things. Including the fact that the games and the other spinoffs are more varied than pokemon and the fact that atlus cares about the end product because unlike pokemon they arn't seemingly to big to fail. (Smt4:Apocalypse and Tms:FE are the exeptions.)
Thanks though!
@@theluminousone5883 Agreed with everything here. Excellent series and can't wait for SMT V
Omg, Pokémon Adventures is _WILD!!!_ I honestly like it better than the official media....
You stopped caring when they started putting actual dragons on the cover lol.

I would suggest playing Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. The story is so amazing, and beautiful!
Though as a fellow fan you either love the repetitive dungeon crawler, or hate it.
@@theluminousone5883 Personally im in a Middle Ground, Love the Story, Soundtrack and Characters, But i hate the Dungeon Crawling aspect
@@superlombax1561 Yeah, I saved scummed for my entire playthrough of explorers of time, and even then most of the time I was only saved by starting as treecko and having absorb/Mega drain alongside tons of reviver and blast seeds.
Though the partner is extremely suicidal and always wastes through reviver seeds.

Diamond and Pearl was a falling away point for a lot of fans, honestly. But you can be a Pokemon fan without playing the main games. My nieces started out with the TCG and plushies, but have since moved up to the core games.
As for you, if playing the main games is really something you want to do, I suggest you do as follows:
1: When possible, play the region's 3rd game or a remake to better enjoy the new region.

Only OGs remember when this video was called “confessions of a Pokémon fan”
Petition for fotafoferret to bring back a brief history
I feel you FoaF, I too have never been able to finish a pokemon game. Though in my defence, I did make it to the pokemon league in pokemon emerald, but for the life of me I could never beat the champion. That guy's grass and water types straight up nuked my team with their poison attacks, even when I had the big legendary Rayuquaza on my team! (I'm really sad they never did a remake of the middle of the road games like emerald or crystal because those are the ones with legendaries I actually want.)
I think one reason I'm so off and on with these monster catching/battle games myself is the character designs.

It was realy weird rediscovering this thing that I know i super loved as a kid, but somehow completely forgot about.
