    Thanks for the video. Along with the alcohol, I use wooden shaft Q-tips for clean-up in tight places. Helps to get rid of flux, dirt, and oils from my grubby hands.

      Good Idea. And I discovered, that I forgot the toothbrush to clean PCBs from Flux

  • @PapasDino
    @PapasDino 7 лет назад

    Great ideas...I found that when using a needle applicator bottle even with a tip protector that flux will dry in the tube and can be a pain to clear. So now whenever I'm done applying flux for the day I simply remove the bottle top and clean the tube out with a little IPA. I also keep IPA and flux in three different containers for different applications - a nail polish bottle with brush, the needle bottle and on of the larger bottles like you display; same three containers for IPA. Really like the flip-up bottle for grabbing some IPA on a cleaning cloth or Q-tip.Thanks for sharing Andreas!

    • @AndreasSpiess
      @AndreasSpiess  7 лет назад

      You're welcome. I forgot to say, that the flux will dry out, as you experience. But the same with me, with a little IPA It usually can be cleaned.

    Dear Andreas,
    I agree with you that the old fashioned wire strippers are very handy, but for most of my wire stripping I use the Klein Tools Katapult. It is like the automatic strippers in that it strips the wires for you, but unlike those it grips the wires from all sides. It does this by having many different wire sizes to choose from, like the old fashioned strippers. It works very well for me, and I think it might be worth a try for you.

    • @AndreasSpiess
      @AndreasSpiess  4 года назад +1

      I once even made a video about strippers and I think, other viewers also recommended the Klein tool.

  • @steveobrien43

    Tinning the wire with solder is not recommended when connecting into a screw terminal block. Over time the solder collapses and the connection may become loose and high resistance. Bare wire strands are the best for screw terminals blocks - the wires spread out under pressure and maximise the surface contact area. Of course care is needed to ensure there are no loose strands hanging out that could cause trouble. As you mentioned, ferrules are neat and tidy but it is critical to match the wire size correctly and crimping needs to be done carefully. I have seen instances of bad crimping causing trouble with connections.

      Did you try to use an alternative box configuration for the resistors? I am using it for in my labs and works pretty well for slow-runners values. On top of that, and only for few fast-runners as 47, 100, 220, 1K, 10K and 1M I have in separate boxes 100pcs of each of them in little boxes.
      And example of this configuration could be seen in www.ebay.com/itm/145-Values-Total-10pcs-each-1-1-4W-Metal-Film-Resistor-Assortment-Kit-1024-/272189800972?hash=item3f5fc6c20c

    I know this is an old video, but I wanted to add a comment about the prototype through-hold PCBs. They are really useful as a template when soldering pin headers. I drop the headers through, put the small board on top, and solder. Out comes perfectly straight, perfectly spaced, parallel pins that easily go into a breadboard.

    hey andreas great video I was just wondering you seem to have some expertise in esp projects. Have you ever come across a small solar box/with a small solar panel with an esp attached which does some sun analytics for you,and pushes data to your IOT cloud. so you can get some stats before you invest in lots of solar panels? Is it ever sunny in Switzerland?

    • @AndreasSpiess
      @AndreasSpiess  7 лет назад

      Sometimes we have snow and sun ;-) No, I think, this is a special device which has to be built. And maybe WiFi would not be sufficient, because on the roof, you might not have one. I think also, there are probably more accurate sensors to measure light than just a solar panel. But I am not a specialist in that.
      I have a project plan for me to measure the sunlight and compare it with short term weather forecast. Because it is not so warm here, we need heating. But if we would have a good short-term forecast, we could reduce sometimes the energy.

    I'm curious Mr. Spiess, why do you use SMDs which need soldering to PCBs with headers before being used on your protoboard? What advantage does it offer over using a through-hole component?

    • @AndreasSpiess
      @AndreasSpiess  7 лет назад +2

      I use SMDs if I do a PCB. And for many of my projects I do PCBs at the end. They are easier to mount (no holes), need less space on the PCB (also because you can mount them on two sides).

    Hallo Andreas,
    vielen Dank für den Einblick in deine Werkstatt! Ich glaube so einen Bauteiletester muss ich mir auch mal besorgen...
    Ich wollte noch fragen, was du für Erfahrungen gemacht hast mit Aliexpress und Zoll...
    Alo ich habe kürzlich eine Bestellung bekommen mit einem Warenwert von 88 USD... dafür musste ich dann 41.- bezahlen!!!
    13.- für Besichtigung und Lagerung, 18.65 Verzollung Zone 2 und 9.45 Einfuhrsteuer... ganz schön Happig...
    Mir wurde dann auf der Post gesagt, dass ich besser unter 65.- Bestellungen machen sollte...
    Gruss

    • @AndreasSpiess
      @AndreasSpiess  7 лет назад

      1. Der Bauteiletester ist eines der erstaunlichsten Geräte, das ich je hatte. Und alles für 10 CHF.
      2. Die Zollobergrenze für CH ist 5.- MwSt. Deshalb die 65.- (allerdings zählt das. Porto ebenfalls zum Wert!!!). Grundsätzlich ein guter Tip.
      3. Meine Pakete von Aliexpress werden selten geprüft. Sie sind oft klein, und die Deklaration nicht richtig. Einmal wurde ein Paket geöffnet, und der Wert war offensichtlich falsch deklariert. Da habe ich auch eine gesalzene Rechnung bekommen, weil wir für die Chinesichen Lieferanten bürgen. Das is 1 aus 1000. Du scheinst einfach Pech gehabt zu haben.

I have hundreds to go through. Some bags of 1% mixed resistors and capacitor grab bags, will finally get a proper place.

    • @AndreasSpiess
      @AndreasSpiess  7 лет назад +1

      So far, I buy them "unmixed", but during work, they sometimes become mixed. I just bougth a set of 103 values, because I often did not have the right one. Now, I have the problem of storing them properly

    can those terminals be soldered to through hole holes? i keep running into issues where i end up breaking solid core before im ready to do something like hot glue for stain relief and getting stranded through the hole isnt always pleasant. im sure some of that is wrong gauge wire, and or I should have a nice large pad to solder a stranded to...but life isnt perfect it would be great if this was a solution. It wouldnt be for a final version...more of a rugged prototype. maybe i need to just invest in a non ebay/china bread board. I've heard quality is everything but so far they just piss me off when time is wasted for a loose connection

      Depends on the size of your pad and hole on the PCB. I see no advantage over just wiring the wire into the hole.

      Andreas Spiess I always end up with a situation like only stranded wire and a size too large ...so then I end up with stray strands trying to reach the next hole. With my luck 5hats usually 5v on a 3v tolerant pin

      For that purpose they might be ok

      Andreas Spiess can u recommend a supplier of Chinese thumbs? I've heard the 6 year old model makes very small, precise and efficient twists for almost no cost...just can't seem to find an eBay seller 😂

      Since this is an old video it is possible they changed their products. For example, Bangood does no more sell "brother" labels...

    Tinning wire and then putting them into "block-connectors" is also a BIG no-no as the solder cold flows! - You will have bad connections over time.

    looks like the wire strippers are these:
    www.aliexpress.com/item/20-30-AWG-160mm-SK7-Stainless-Steel-Cable-Decrustation-Plier-Wire-Stripper/32797302290.html
    they have 3 "colors" that really just change wire gauge. the middle one looks exactly like the one in the video. same measurements, same design, same lettering.
    there are a few _very_ similar ones (also on ebay), but these are the only ones where everything is identical.

      Ich habe gehört, dass sich Augerpumpen dafür gut eignen. Ich habe mir eine keine gekauft, um (dickflüssigen) Lötzinn in kleinen Dosen auf der Leiterplatte zu dispensen. Die gibts auch grösser. Einfach googeln. Hab das Prinzip auch schon in Kläranlagen gesehen, und da hat es ja auch dickflüssige Kompenenten...

    Liked the video and wanted to support by buying through the links. But aliexpress has painfully bad and unprofessional e-commerce. After a few unsuccessful tries to give them money I abandoned. Not good enough in today’s world. Try linking to Amazon. It works. I’ll see if I can support you on Patreon. Keep producing for us!

    Aderendhülsen sind im Gegensatz zum Verzinnen in der Industrie auch die erlaubte Methode :-)
    Verzinnte Leitungen drücken sich über die Zeit ein und können aus Schraubklemmen rutschen, Aderendhülsen verformen sich (angeblich) nur einmal beim Einschrauben. Käfigzugklemmen stellen sich quasi nach, bzw. gehen so sanft mit den Leitungen um, dass sich nichts verformt
