I just thank God for these Motown hits and the fact that I was just the right age when they arrived here on planet earth from heaven... Angels the lot of them.
All of these gentlemen was legends. there will never be any other studio players that will come close. ladies and gentlemen i present to you;THE FUNK BROTHERS!!!!!
DAMN, there will never never ever be a sound a kool and smooth as the MOTOWN SOUND!! I'm glad i was apart of history during that era listening to the baddest sound EVER!!!!!!! CAN I GET AN AMEN???
I am 46 and my parents loved motown. I grew up on this music. I am from a small city called Chi-town and here they played the funk brothers music all the time. Even though I was a little boy I could feel the good music in the air and as I got old enough to express myself on the dance floor, when mom and dad would have basement parties, I would dance my butt off. Man I miss those days. Thanks for the post. Peace
The Elgins were no joke either! Their entire album was TOR SHELF from beginning to end and should be listened to in its entirety. As quiet as its kept, they also had a male lead singer who helped them go from the Motown sound to that Southern soul sound with ease and precision!
zodiolestes: I beg to differ. The Andantes were "mixed in" with just about every Motown recording, male or female, solo artist or group. They WERE the "real backup singers". Some of the original Motown acts didn't have the precise intonation and articulation the Andantes did, and they were often double-tracked (and even triple-tracked) to compensate. They were uncredited for decades, like the Funk Brothers, but they were another essential part of the "Sound Of Young America".
One significant exception was Gladys Knight & The Pips who, after hearing The Adantes added to the mix of their first Motown single "Just Walk In My Shoes" insisted there be NO OTHER VOICES but THE PIPS on their records!
There's no doubt the Mighty Funk Brothers were the musicians giving life to the Motown sound. These mostly jazz musicians brought their vast knowledge of rhythm, chord structure and progressions into studio A. But an equally crucial role was played by the magnificently talented Motown composers such as the Holland,Dozier and Holland songwriting team, who cranked out a phenomenal number of songs between '63 - '68. Without this original material, Motown never would've enjoyed the success it had.
Could a tune ever get more 'Motown' in it's make up, arrangement and general sound than this. This is the two major building blocks of so very many songs at the label, The Funk Brother and the Andantes.
That's Joe Messina . Messina was one of the most prolific guitarists in Motown Records' Funk Brothers. James Jamerson Bass Guitar may be the greatest bassist of alltime. Earl Van Dyke (piano); was the leader. They were some of the best musicians ever grouped together. the Funk Brothers have played on more number-one records than The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson and The Beach Boys combined.
TODAY 90 YEARS AGO when BENNY BENJAMIN (July 25, 1925) was born He was an American musician, most notable as the primary drummer for the Motown studio band known as The Funk Brothers.
Most engineers won't let a drummer play in studio without a click track (metronome) anymore .in-ear clicks didn't even exist in those days.emphatically , Benny's beyond indefatigable or incomparable ,the man's downright unassailable
Carol Kaye is an L.A. bassist, who played with the "Wrecking Crew" (another group of studio musicians; producers and songwriters like Sonny Bono, Jim Webb, Phil Spector, Brian Wilson, and Bones Howe took advantage of their expertise). Carol claimed participation in Motown's original recordings, but no documentation or first-hand witnesses have supported her. The DVD "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" has copies of production notes and bank statements proving to the contrary.
Did read that Carol Kaye was the bass player on several motown songs that were recorded in L.A when berry gordy was starting to spread his wings,so as to speak. She reputedly played on love is here and now you're gone by the supremes but there's all sorts of conjecture about her involvement and tracks being over dubbed by the funk bros. later in detroit. We will probably never know for sure.
This song, originally done by The Elgins, by the Funk Brothers, was released on Motown's VIP Records Label as VIP 25037 in either July or August 1966 and is featured in the "Motown Original Artist Karaoke" karaoke CD+G series by the Singing Machine
The guy shown at the 32 second mark was Bob Babbitt. He came to Motown in 1967. He was Stevie Wonder's tour bassist before he was hired to become part of Motown's studio band.
makes you cry happy tears, dance till the soles of your shoes wear out and ask every pretty girl in the room to marry you....all in one go.... oh I love it so
A difficult one that, no one can be that sure because over the years there had been 77 members of the Band. The track was recorded in 1966 so a best guess would be Ivy Jo (Hunter) Band Leader and Piano Earl Van Dyke Keyboards Jack Brokensha Vibes (not sure they are on the track) Benny Benjamin and or Richard Allen Drums James Jamerson Bass Jack Ashford Percussion Robert White Eddie Willis and Joe Messina Guitars. Anyone out there that knows for sure Let me know. Cheers and KTF Dave
Almost all Motown songs sound great to me, but I think Bonnie Pointer did a better version of this one in the disco era. The Funk Brothers really defined the Motown sound.
@MacMic33 Carol Kaye is an extraordinary bassist and she has played on literally hundreds of hits, but let's get things straight...she never played on any of the Jamerson tracks she tries to take credit for. She does herself and her talent a great dis-service by making such outrageous claims. Jamerson is The Man.
@MacMic333 I disagree. Let us QUICKLY forget her input.. as far as Motown is concerned. This woman has done NOTHING short of attempt to disgrace Jamerson's name, legacy and discography by taking credit for performances such as "I Was Made To Love Her" by Stevie Wonder and "Bernadette" by The Four Tops .. as well as others. The producers of those songs have given sworn testimony that Jamerson was the bassist on those songs. Taking shots at a dead man who's not here to defend himself isn't cool.
Without dozier there would never have been northern, poss the beatles stones, they all used mitiwn, thank fk that britain embraced motiwn and if you folliw interviews, artist apprecuated fact that they were seen as equal, 4hats nirthern all no matter where what eff8n wtf we are same, 1973 nirthern race sex religion never came into it we all felt oppressed
Carol Kaye had nothing to do with this song or any great motown hits. She was not part of the funk brothers band. The motown sound was created by the funk brothers. Carol Keys is just bitter that James Jamerson is considered the greatest bassist of all time. James Jamerson was a genius bass player, Carol Kaye is not a genius.
Mighty Mighty Funk Brothers
They deserve to honored
BIG🎉
I just thank God for these Motown hits and the fact that I was just the right age when they arrived here on planet earth from heaven... Angels the lot of them.
Best house band in rock music history
James Jamerson is the Greatest bass player of all time, his Basslines created the motown sound, a real unsung hero.
AMEN!!!
you got it! HAA!
indeed, and Amen.
What a treat to listen to the music they made . GOD bless them.

The Funky Brothers were
incredible, the right talent brought together by God.

Proposed to my wife when this was playing, love the Elgin's record and The Funk Bros were amazing.
The Elgins were no joke either! Their entire album was TOR SHELF from beginning to end and should be listened to in its entirety. As quiet as its kept, they also had a male lead singer who helped them go from the Motown sound to that Southern soul sound with ease and precision!
Lets not forget the wonderful Carol Kaye's bass input into bass playing.
actually Carol Kaye never played with Funk Bros....she was a member of Wrecking Crew

Could a tune ever get more 'Motown' in it's make up, arrangement and general sound than this. This is the two major building blocks of so very many songs at the label, The Funk Brother and the Andantes.
Lucky fella to have grown up in the USA at the right time, Wish I had been there to see it all happen. KTF Dave

Ivo Ponduša very nice thing to say/do...

But unfortunately he died on 4/20/69.
🤓🌻
Another one of the greats gone. RIP Uriel x
Anyone else think the guy 18 secs in looks remarkably like British comic Lenny Hendry? Been loving this music since early 60's ...thanks!
One Motown recording that carol Kaye is said to ahve played Bass on is Do I love You Indeed I do.This track was recorded in La
love this track

Now even I know who Carol Kaye is, big fan of the "Spector Sound", second only to my beloved Motown.

Yes the Andantes were added to the mix BUT DON'T OVERRATE THEM! They were mixed in with THE REAL BACKUP SINGERS!
My pleasure. It's here Just to spread the word, The Funk Brothers are owed Sooo much. Ktf
makes you cry happy tears, dance till the soles of your shoes wear out and ask every pretty girl in the room to marry you....all in one go.... oh I love it so
They of course recorded the Main Vocals for the released single, however the vocals you hear on this version is Andates. Ktf
fantastic real music....does make me feel happy
Is that the angelic Andantes providing vocals?
Hope you had a great wedding. I know your mate was happy!
Glad you enjoyed it. ktf Dave

Almost all Motown songs sound great to me, but I think Bonnie Pointer did a better version of this one in the disco era. The Funk Brothers really defined the Motown sound.

Who is Carol Kaye?
Legendary bassist from the wrecking crew out in Los Angeles.
Sounds like Baby Love
To paraphrase ray Wilkins, my word...
@MacMic333 Negligible, as far as Motown's hits were concerned.
Benny Benjamin was the best Motown drummer
WITH OUT THIS BAND MOWTONW WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPEND

well actually the Funks (or some of them) played with Members of the Wrecking Crew, of whom Carol played for after Motown was shipped to LA.
