💗💗💗 Before anything else in my long comment, I praise Evgeni Plushenko for miraculously maintaining his equanimity at about 2:57 when his right foot crashes against the skating-rink barrier, causing his left foot to stumble momentarily; I have never seen him make that sort of miscalculation before. (The length of my comment is a measure of my longstanding profound admiration of Plushenko.)
Plushenko reminds me of the great actor Laurence Olivier: in this routine, Plushenko completely enters into and inhabits the character of the toreador he is portraying (from the opera "Carmen).
Like Olivier, he seems to have painstakingly trained himself to make it appear that he is enormously focused on the audience during these difficult performances--and I have no doubt that he is spurred on by their reactions throughout--but as in the case of great pianists, I assume that he is largely oblivious of his surroundings and focused split-second by split-second on being utterly isolated within himself to maintain the concentration to carry out precisely what he has rehearsed for thousands upon thousands of hours in order to achieve something similar to the "muscle memory" that pianists must rely upon. Without that muscle memory, there cannot be the sublime fluidity that characterizes Plushenko's performances above all others I have seen. Without that fluidity, his actions would seem utterly deliberate, and the magic would be lost. (He is even MORE miraculous in his performances because, unlike pianists, he is hearing constant cheers throughout his time on the ice, not merely at the end, as a pianist would!).
I don't know how much the choreographer had to do with it, but Plushenko's compelling portrayal of raw sexuality--especially with his emphatic ARM movements (and even MORE pronounced in his 2002 Olympic "Carmen" performance, which aside from his "Sex Bomb" treats, has always been my favorite) in certain earlier moments of THIS performance, e.g. 0:30, 0:37, 1:20-1:25, 1:45, 2:14, 2:17-2:30, 3:17, 4:24--hit their intended mark as much as when Plushenko in "Sex Bomb" ingeniously dons a muscle-man bodysuit and hilariously portrays yet another identity not his own--though I think that especially women have since assumed from that clever combination of well-choreographed and -acted sexual seduction ALONGSIDE an impish macho caricature (which Plushenko pulls off BRILLIANTLY!!!), that that is a true representation of Plushenko's own sexuality. I doubt very, very much that it IS.
But those fake muscles and alluring hip gyrations from "Sex Bomb" are indelibly etched in my own memory; and even though I know that that is not the true Evgeni Plushenko or his body, it is very difficult to remember that. I think it is because it is a convincing characterization so thoroughly at odds with his generally very modest public demeanor: only a truly great actor can achieve that momentary "deception."
But that is Plushenko's genius: like Laurence Olivier, he has us completely believing not ONLY the illusion, but that the illusion is actually who Plushenko IS. I wonder how he has coped all these years with that perception of him.
It is wonderful fate that the song "Sex Bomb"--as ONLY Tom Jones could have written and sung it!--was paired with the INCOMPARABLE persona of Evgeni Plushenko. I have only rarely seen two artists' combined works produce so intense, delightful, and unforgettable a "chemical reaction."
(By the way, to me, Plushenko's ultra-masculine spirit in the "Sex Bomb" videos is not unconnected with his ultra-masculine spirit in the "Carmen" performances: it's just that the bodybuilder is a metaphorical toreador gloriously run amok.)
On a more serious note, today I saw a recent interview with Plushenko that had me WEEPING from beginning to end: the title of it is something like "I Am Happy at 40, I Have Many Plans." (I cannot find it again to link it here.)
I noticed long ago that Plushenko seems to have a very recessive personality, though in the moment many times I have seen him laugh and smile easily in response to those around him, but very rarely at his own initiation.
In the Plushenko interview today that I mentioned above, there is no mistaking that in addition to being an incomparable actor and technician, the greatest acting of his life may be his mastery of hiding a profound, perhaps lifelong, sadness behind his lovely, heavily-lidded eyes with their ever-present steady, quiet gaze. I also sensed a feeling in him of "aloneness," though I hope I am mistaken.
To me, that persistent look is of a man who has wanted to be hugged and safely enfolded all his life, but without having to be an active participant, without having to earn it or initiate it--what every child wants and needs.
This angel Plushenko is supremely generous to the public and certainly enjoys having thrilled them at every performance, almost the way a sweet, innocent child delights in having produced joy for someone.
My thought is that despite his love of skating, that I could have seen him pursuing a career in stage acting after retiring from competitive skating, while perhaps continuing to do skating exhibitions and fundraisers.
His affection for his sons is beautifully charming, warm, and sincere, but I wonder that he himself is training them as skaters, though I fully understand why that desire and dream would have been understandably difficult to resist on his part. I hope with all of my being that neither he nor his children will ever suffer heartbreak because he is their instructor, trainer, and coach as well as their wonderful father; that sort of highly-complex relationship requires a very, very delicate balance.
I hope that Evgeni Plushenko understands that his rare gift as an infinitely talented actor is perhaps even more notable at times than his technical skill as a skater: I hope that he himself realizes how extraordinarily gifted he is as an actor, and that he does not underestimate that aspect of himself.
To me, that acting comes from his soul whereas the skating is the physical means of expressing his soul to the world.
I can only hope that Plushenko has truly felt even one ten-thousandth of the pure joy in his skating career that we around the world have always felt because of his humanness and generosity. I hope that our worldwide symbolic hug has sustained him greatly.

I'm liking the plush velvet, but his Olympic Carmen costume is actually one of my favourites of all his costumes. That cute little red tie flapping about... Boyish but masculine with a faint solute to the femininity of Carmen. It ticked all the boxes, lol.

Without a doubt, I believe this is his finest, most compelling Carmen, an extremely powerful characterization with many very dramatic head, arm, and hand movements absent in his other performances. Spectacular!
