I met Barry at Frensham Trout Fishery in Surrey on Sunday 1st September 2019. He had been talking to the owner and my wife who mentioned I had just started fly fishing, and without prompting Barry came over and gave me some kindly advice on casting and retrieving and also set me up with some free flies. What a lovely man and so very helpful. I can't tell you how big his plums are but the way he walked off suggests he could be right...
Nice session. If you're paying 25 - 30 quid and you've genuinely tried 'proper' flies but it's just really tough going then why not reach for something that's gonna give you a chance... You still have to go find it, play it and land it. A lure is a lure is a lure...
The main thing with booby fishing is to not leave the Bobby static when doing catch and release fishing.....if the booby is static you more than likely will have to kill the fish
The other way I like to fish boobies is on a fast glass or di5 with a six foot leader and a loop knot.....I steady figure of 8 on the fast glass and go a bit quicker on the di5.......this is ok for catch and release as the trout tend to not have a chance to deep swallow the booby
a real purist would only catch wild trout, with a natural, stockies are bred to be caught they are fed pellets, if the fisheries want us to use only natural looking flies they should only feed the trout natural food, there in lies the conundrum!!!! i like to use imitaters but if i am blanking, out come the blobs and the candy,

If your fishing for stocked fish i would leave the "proper flies" in the box
Nice tutorial as always.
Thank you! Cheers!

John Welander glad you enjoyed the vid 👍
Hi misses had bought 5to7 weight reel and my rod and fly line is 6 would it still work
Should be totally fine I reckon
Hiya Barry. Is it sinking line or inter you are using? Have you gone for a 5wt or a weight heavier? Cheers Mike
Mahi Mike I was using a di4 sinking line from memory....it took some time but it hit the bottom after waiting some time
Ah interesting, is the short leader the reason for not getting a deep hook?
