Honestly, as bad as classic collection is as a way to play the original 3 games, the fact they got a genesis emulator able to play most of the classics working on the ds on its own is pretty impressive

It's a damn fantastic game. Back in the day of cassette tapes, I used the cheat code to put on the sound test, and put the tape player up against the TV to record my own playable soundtrack. It was worth the trouble.
I said the same thing, Hydro -> water, and its in a city/ruins of a city. I ruled out velocity since you are in or outside the water for the entire stage for the most part, not skimming its surface

Man, I was lucky enough to get Sonic And Knuckles first (till this day I still think my buddy stole it from his cousins) and then Sonic 3 after. One summer I got grounded and all I had was these games, by the end of that summer, I had mastered everything there was to master in these games. Of course the replay was there, I had other great games, but I was a Sonic fanatic, and I refused to stop playing till I got everything for every character. My cousin who got me into Sonic many years prior got jealous and dubbed me the Sonic God. Only cause before 3 & Knuckles I had an unhealthy addiction to the previous Sonic games. Every once in awhile I'll dust off the old Sega and have a run through.
After you told me to play it, I loved it! And 100% completed it! (Sonic story) and I am still playing it now completing it as tails and knuckles. Thanks!
Honestly, I'd say there are many factors that have helped lead to 20 years of Sonic being confused and seemingly un-pleasable: 1. It had one of the most iconic, intriguing game styles of the 2D era, based around heft and momentum. 2. 3D Game Development is hard to begin with, and early 3D games led to a lot of franchises becoming husks of their former selves. 3. They keep hammering in the idea of raw speed as a concept of the franchise, and that led to Sonic Team floundering, on their own, trying to create a mechanically palatable and satisfying version of playing The Flash. Heft and Momentum aren't really factors when Sonic, at his fastest, is supposed to be "so fast, he's his own DeLorean", and they want you to really feel that. 4. It is the, no joke, fourth most fan-ficced video game franchise of all time, and the most fan-ficced franchise if you're only counting franchises that started before the 3D era. (Mario, by comparison, is 14th all time and 4th if you're talking strictly pre 3D.) 5. It also had a massive, long running, American comic book series. So: The level of narrative accomplishment AND mechanical polish being asked for is...insane. To solve the mechanics issue: #1. Unless you want to make another boost game, Sonic and Shadow should be OUT. Allow them to be stupid fast. To address the narrative issue: #2. Get Ian Flynn to write the thing from the start. Not translate it, just...write it, and other people can translate it. That paid off huge for the Batman: Arkham series at the beginning.
New game plus is honestly the best shows you are making, being so reflective in-nature shows how much you have grown as a creator and how you have elevated your competionist game, great vid Jirard and team
I was always waiting for the re-completion of Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It's really just one of the greatest 2D platformers, and maybe my personal favorite. Great review as always.
I liked the throwback on Mania, but it was a bit too much. I really hope they'll release another game with 100% new stages. If I have to choose between 3&K or Mania, I'll go with 3&K, but I have faith that a new all original game will be even better than Mania (wich was amazing, don't get me wrong)
My only regret is that I can't like the video more than once. I have been waiting for this one and I still loved it. I can agree with 95% of what you said with the exception of one thing. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 will always be my favorite Sonic game, it was my first game I beat 100% (and beat in general without cheats) and it'll always no matter what game comes out today will always be my number 1 because it takes me back to those carefree kid days. Mania is amazing though!

He was renamed Robotnik in the USA to make him seem more dangerous because 90s and I dunno, residual Cold War feelings? Adventure 1 they eased back in the Eggman name to unify the canon and make it so scripts are easier for translation? -shrug?-

Finally a game I actually truly completed just as you did, and back in the 90s as a kid as well! Discovering Hyper Sonic for the first time and obliterating everything onscreen with that white flash was so hype! 11th favorite game ever for me. Also, so many tense memories of those bonus stages as the speed would ramp up and take my heart rate with it haha
The music is best of any sonic game. I love how you read us your completion journal and told the story about hanging out with that kid “nick” because he had the game. I can totally relate!
I'd still say Sonic 3 & Knuckles is better than Mania because it just manages to edge Mania out by having more story transitions letting it tell it's story better than Mania, otherwise both games are great. As for what game I would like to see next, please do Maximum Carnage again but please do the superior SNES version this time. The Genesis version does not do the game justice. On a side note I disagree that your newer videos are more comprehensive than your old ones as you used to really get into the story, characters, and final boss.
Mania has story transitions, just that the story jumps all over the place, paying homage to previous games and levels. It's not as engaging as S3&K's straight forward adventure story.
I'm never going to get over how good you are at this game to this day I have never collected all the chaos emerald in this game it is just to hard for me but it is always a pleasure to watch you do it hope you do Secret of Mana at some point in the future it was the second game you covered on the show and the episode I feel where you really established your style even if you hadn't perfected it yet
You forgot how if you beat the entire game with just the chaos emeralds and never go into a big ring in mushroom hills or beyond you get a special graphic over your save file. (Like so he sees this)
Side note, there's a different graphic for all 3 characters so you'll need to beat the game 3 more times while never running into a hyper emerald ring.

I have an extreme bias towards this game. As much as I loved Mania, I love this game even more. It’s defined my childhood, it was the first game I got that was solely mine, and it was the first game I completely beat. It’s my favorite game of all time for a reason.

I actually just found this game in great condition at a local game shop for a few bucks. I was really happy to get it back in my collection and then had to do a double take when I saw that New Game+ was doing the episode about the game I just got my hands on. So much fun to see this again.

I'd just get the steam version so you can have all the mods/hacks and stuff while supporting an official release... That said, they probably should have a PSN version too, if they don't... Haven't checked for a while... Not sure which it would emulate better on... The steam one probably doesn't have the best ever emulation, but it's serviceable for the most part... I dunno...
Get a genesis emulator and get sonic 3 complete with a lot of customization making s3k even better also I agree with you on the mania things I will always prefer s3k also you forgot you can use debug mode in save files which is really amazing if you for example already done a playthrough as sonic alone and is gonna do one with sonic and tails as it speeds things up
I'm going to say Mania is better than 3 and Knuckles People complain that Mania doesn't have enough originality or is too short, but it fixes those problems in plain site, especially with the crossover zones (Flying battery act 2 with wing fortress, stardust speedway act 1 with marble garden, mirage saloon act 1 with sky chase zone, etc.) Also, in Mania every single Act 1 and 2 variant in the game are drastically different levels. The largest contrast in 3 & K was seeing Angel Island Zone Act 2 get engulfed in flames, but in Mania, every single level transition in the game surprises you in the same way. And finally, levels like Chemical Plant Act 2 are NOT classic levels. There are so many brand spanking new mechanics everywhere that the only thing resembling a classic level are the visuals. If you were to replace the visuals and give the zone a new name like "nuclear factory zone" anybody would say it's a new zone
superWTF64lol While I agree that It's amazing how much room for improvement they sniffed out in flying battery or green hill, there are notable regressions in design which range from the most subjective(music in stardust speedway changing completely without changing the aesthetic or the new chemical plant synth sounding like a fart in a tin can) to things like an unpolished set of boss counters, pretending there was a story (you might say they didn't have the resources but 3 pulled it off and Mania wasted one of its animations on a trailer when CD used both of them). Worse bosses Poor narrative Weird pacing Incomplete Hydro city act 1 cmon guys just because they're all water levels doesn't mean they'll work together. 2 much automation (basically the same thing as having to stand still in sonic 3. I see right through you mania).
I still remember owning Sonic 3 as a kid and then my friend’s brother gave me his copy, where he had Super Sonic unlocked. I was amazed, since I was too young to unlock him on my own.
Getting all of the Emeralds is hard on its own and requires lots of practice so mastering the special stages and going super/hyper is an amazing reward.

I'd still say Sonic 3 & Knuckles is better than Mania because it just manages to edge Mania out by having more story transitions letting it tell it's story better than Mania, otherwise both games are great. As for what game I would like to see next, please do Maximum Carnage again but please do the superior SNES version this time. The Genesis version does not do the game justice. On a side note I disagree that your newer videos are more comprehensive than your old ones as you used to really get into the story, characters, and final boss.
Mania has story transitions, just that the story jumps all over the place, paying homage to previous games and levels. It's not as engaging as S3&K's straight forward adventure story.
I'm never going to get over how good you are at this game to this day I have never collected all the chaos emerald in this game it is just to hard for me but it is always a pleasure to watch you do it hope you do Secret of Mana at some point in the future it was the second game you covered on the show and the episode I feel where you really established your style even if you hadn't perfected it yet
You forgot how if you beat the entire game with just the chaos emeralds and never go into a big ring in mushroom hills or beyond you get a special graphic over your save file. (Like so he sees this)
Side note, there's a different graphic for all 3 characters so you'll need to beat the game 3 more times while never running into a hyper emerald ring.

I have an extreme bias towards this game. As much as I loved Mania, I love this game even more. It’s defined my childhood, it was the first game I got that was solely mine, and it was the first game I completely beat. It’s my favorite game of all time for a reason.

I actually just found this game in great condition at a local game shop for a few bucks. I was really happy to get it back in my collection and then had to do a double take when I saw that New Game+ was doing the episode about the game I just got my hands on. So much fun to see this again.

This game will allways be my number 1 classic sonic game. Sorry Mania, you are quiet good, but you clearly missing such great moments like Angel island getting on fire, Defeating a golem by tricking him into a quicksand pit, the thrill of the growing pyramid ghost, the cool as heck looking snowboard section, every moment with Knuckles as your nemesis, including the part where he finally realize that Eggman is the real bad guy AND of course the epicness that where hypersonic and Mecha Sonic. Whatcha sayin, Mania? You have Metal Sonic? Yeah that is nice if you enjoy a freakin fan with metal toothpics as limbs. Sorry, I prefer the more badass looking robot who btw. can TURN FREAKIN SUPER!

I'd just get the steam version so you can have all the mods/hacks and stuff while supporting an official release... That said, they probably should have a PSN version too, if they don't... Haven't checked for a while... Not sure which it would emulate better on... The steam one probably doesn't have the best ever emulation, but it's serviceable for the most part... I dunno...

Get a genesis emulator and get sonic 3 complete with a lot of customization making s3k even better also I agree with you on the mania things I will always prefer s3k also you forgot you can use debug mode in save files which is really amazing if you for example already done a playthrough as sonic alone and is gonna do one with sonic and tails as it speeds things up

I'm going to say Mania is better than 3 and Knuckles
People complain that Mania doesn't have enough originality or is too short, but it fixes those problems in plain site, especially with the crossover zones (Flying battery act 2 with wing fortress, stardust speedway act 1 with marble garden, mirage saloon act 1 with sky chase zone, etc.)
Also, in Mania every single Act 1 and 2 variant in the game are drastically different levels. The largest contrast in 3 & K was seeing Angel Island Zone Act 2 get engulfed in flames, but in Mania, every single level transition in the game surprises you in the same way.
And finally, levels like Chemical Plant Act 2 are NOT classic levels. There are so many brand spanking new mechanics everywhere that the only thing resembling a classic level are the visuals. If you were to replace the visuals and give the zone a new name like "nuclear factory zone" anybody would say it's a new zone
superWTF64lol While I agree that It's amazing how much room for improvement they sniffed out in flying battery or green hill, there are notable regressions in design which range from the most subjective(music in stardust speedway changing completely without changing the aesthetic or the new chemical plant synth sounding like a fart in a tin can) to things like an unpolished set of boss counters, pretending there was a story (you might say they didn't have the resources but 3 pulled it off and Mania wasted one of its animations on a trailer when CD used both of them).

Getting all of the Emeralds is hard on its own and requires lots of practice so mastering the special stages and going super/hyper is an amazing reward.

I fucking loved that show, I wanted to be IN the game so badly I remember! I was only like 7 in 1992 though, and I think I was too young to have even qualified to be on the show. Same deal with Legends of the Hidden Temple which EVERYONE our age wanted to be on back in the mid 90's lol...
