    I just watched Beyond the Black Rainbow. Amazing. I definitely need to pick up a physical copy. What a great suggestion, Culturedog. And yes I did watch it at 2AM.

    Fantastic collection. I knew it would be as soon as you busted out Beyond the Black Rainbow. I agree about the 2 AM recommendation, but for even greater effect play the film while hopped on cold medication like I was when I first saw it...

      +Astro Chicken Thanks! Oh, man, the NyQuil Factor must enhance that movie so much! Haha!

    I saw the Space Odyssey once the DVD went back to the store the same day.

      +ilcool90 Haha! It's definitely a "love it or hate it" kinda flick. Just heard that it's coming to theaters again as part of the syndicated "Cinema Classics" series. Not I get to threaten my wife with a repeat viewing! Haha!

    Alot of people give me flak for it, but I really enjoyed Dune. Just a visually stunning, and great sounding film. Have it on HD-DVD and its fantastic. I think they actually just ported the HD-DVD to Blu Ray when Universal conceded to the demise of HD-DVD.
    The official restored version of Metropolis is gorgeous. The amount of work and dedication that went to restoring and preserving the film is mind boggling.But the additional footage they found in Argentina was from a heavily degraded 16mm copy, and it looks extremely rough against the restored original 35mm material. A testament to the mistreat of films in the early years of cinema. :(
    Have you ever seen the sequel to 2001? "2010: The Year We made Contact". Fantastic film that was unfairly judged because it did not try to outdo its predecessor, but actually told its story much straighter and managed to answer the questions raised in 2001. Its a adaption of the original novel "2010: Odyssey Two", and Arthur C Clarke, the author, helped with the screenplay too! Available on Blu Ray for quite cheap.

      +Vanguard Yeah, I can understand the complaints about Dune on a mental level, but in my gut I know I love it and can watch it over and over again. I'll have to do a Dune collection vid someday. I need to finally pick up the Japanese LD boxed set first though. That's been on my 'to get list' for too long!
      Can't wait to check out the restored Metropolis. Too bad about the Argentina footage, but at least they did locate it. I was pretty impressed with Kino's Nosferatu release. Couldn't believe the amount of detail it had for a 90+ year old movie!
      I was all about 2010 when it came out - saw it in the theater, bought the souvenir booklet and the soundtrack LP (and had picked up the Odyssey Two novel beforehand of course). That's the movie that convinced me I'd most likely have a dolphin pool in my living room once I was old enough. Haha! Kubrick die-hards love to dismiss it because it wasn't made by "the Master", but I love it. I should definitely track down a Blu-ray copy.

    Great bluray update Sam...I love this version of Dune too...as you say, warts and all....like where it rains at the end...are you f'ing kidding me???....still, an interesting film, and it had a really fantastic cast...Dredd kicked serious ass, and if they never do another, at least we have one perfect gem of a real Judge Dredd flick!

      +Garth Tiffen Thanks man! I need to do a Dune collection video for sure - I've even got the old promo glossary sheets they gave out in theaters and video stores to help people understand all of the terminology. The studio really had zero confidence in that movie! Haha!
      And yup - Dredd Rules OK!

    I meet Spike Spiegel himself, Steve Blum. Nice sci-fi blu-rays.

      +John “The Justified Ancient” Jenkins That's awesome! I thought he did a great job with Spike - really nailed that world-weary vibe.

      +ilcool90 Oh yeah! They just changed the direction of the Statue of Liberty's head.
      Maybe they should have sent Snake Plissken in there to take care of the monster!

    So I guess you didn't see the 3-D version of Dredd in the theatre. I can attest that the 3-D (which is native 3-D) is amazing (Anthony Dod Mantle handles 3-D much better than most cinematographers). I saw it in a theatre with only two other people (who talked throughout) watching. The endless chatter somehow didn't distract.

    • @Culturedog
      @Culturedog  9 лет назад

      +Sir Stewart Wallace Yeah, I missed the 3-D boat on that one theatrically. I just remember people buzzing about how trippy it was. Native 3-D does go a long way - it's pretty rare that I see a converted film and don't forget about the 3-D within the first 10 minutes.
      Gotta love considerate theatergoers! I guess it's a testament to the film that it overpowered their discussion though.

      +Egon Spengler Hey man! Good to see you! Would definitely dig seeing some collection vids - bring 'em on!
      I wonder who owns the rights to Dune now? After the success of the Sci-Fi Channel miniseries and the Jodorowsky's Dune documentary, I think people would be ready to see a different version/interpretation. I was just watching the Blade Runner documentary on the Final Cut set the other night and Ridley Scott was talking about how he was actively chasing Dune after making Alien. That would have been interesting for sure. Still, warts and all, I do love the Lynch version!

    Nice collection! I was looking for 2001 on bluray for ages before finding it, not a bad price. I'll have to search for Metropolis, have a basic copy I got ages ago on DVD for a couple of bucks (now that same version is on archive.org!), but I want a better copy of it now.
    How is the Cowboy Bebop movie on bluray? picked it up on DVD when it first came out here but wonder if there's a reason to 'upgrade'.

    • @Culturedog
      @Culturedog  8 лет назад

      +Nishikintoki Thanks! I used to have one of those public domain Metropolis DVDs too - the one I had was basically a VHS copy transferred onto DVD. It even had visible tape glitches from time to time.
      The Cowboy Bebop movie is a mixed bag - it's a budget title (which is cool considering how expensive the Japanese import is here in the US), but there are no extras at all. The image quality is definitely better than the DVD, but... they cheaped out and didn't include the 5.1 mix, only 2.0 Japanese and English tracks. On the plus side, at least it's LPCM audio and not Dolby Digital 2.0.

    Does Dredd (2012) have an audio commentary?

    • @Culturedog
      @Culturedog  9 лет назад

      +tph2010 Unfortunately not. There are a couple of decent featurettes (mostly around 15 minutes each), but it's pretty light on extras.

      Culturedog
      Have you ever considered doing your own audio commentaries and putting them on RUclips?

    • @Culturedog
      @Culturedog  9 лет назад

      +tph2010 Yeah, I might get back into that. I used to make them occasionally and post them on Archive.org way back when. Would definitely be fun to start that up again!
