  • Joan Littlewood was a renowned 1960s theatre director but made only one feature film, Sparrows Can’t Sing (1962). Actors Barbara Windsor and Murray Melvin recall auditioning for and working with Littlewood, while the former explains how East End gangsters Ronnie and Reggie Kray were involved in the film’s London premiere.
Q&A chaired by BFI Fiction Curator Jo Botting.

I dont want to remember Barbara Windsor in Eastenders although she showed her acting craft superbly but i want to remember Barabara Windsor as the bubbly vivacious effervescent London Queen of the Carry on comedy films. She was a lovely and entertaining actress and will be missed.

It's immensely sad that Barbara has fallen ill when, in this interesting interview, she seemed so on top. The theme to the film _Sparrows Can't Sing_ is also on YT, a touching song from Lionel Bart (as she mentioned here). I recommend you seek it out to hear how beautifully Barbara carries the tune while interpreting the lyric with great feeling.

Such a shame that BFI isn't available in New Zealand. Murray and Barbara are a hoot together. I'd love to see the film. Thanks for this brilliant 50 minutes in the company of two wonderful actors.

Murray Melvin was great with Rita Tushingham in the movie A Taste Of Honey. He was also in the film Alfie with Michael Caine. Barbara Windsor has sadly been diagnosed with Altsizors (excuse the spelling) disease.

Interesting from Babs but why the continuous references to the Krays? They were convicted criminals who terrified the east end.

Having watched this film, I feel it could have been so much better if Joan had bothered about the craft of film making. Ken Loach manages to still respect the conventions of cinema.
