    I love fan casting characters when i write screenplays. It's easier to imagine it in your head that way.

      I love doing that too!!! It's so great for dialogue especially! If I can imagine them saying it I feel like I've won lol!!

    I wasn't even considering writing a pilot or screenplay, but you are such an inspiration, Becca! I especially love how you research. I'm a huge fan of Psych--I hadn't considered the genre, tho. THANKS!!!

      Hali!! Thank you so much!!! And heck yes to Psych!! I freaking love that show and it's such a good example of combining both character and mystery! (And Gus is one of my favorite characters of all time!!! Dule Hill is brilliant lol!)

    Thank you, really awesome approach! 🙌 It's so easy to get overwhelmed by the entire process. Or distracted by plot beats, character arcs and world building; almost missing out on what actually engages and gives the audience (and us some needed) clarity 🍀

      And yes, this makes me want to write a pilot too... 😇

      Thank you!!! And I totally agree, especially with TV. There's just so much to consider when writing the pilot. This way I can see how the masters do it and it makes it a little easier in my head (format-wise at least lol!)

    This is so useful! I’m currently writing a screenplay plot now (only writing the idea of it and haven’t started to write the script of it) and this made me think of comparisons for it. It was hard to think tho since my story is set in modern day but is fantasy. I’ll have to really think on what shows may fit slightly into the genre I’m looking at 🤔

      Sometimes it's really hard for me too to think of a show or feature that fits the same genre of vibe of what I'm working on! Usually in those cases I just try to find something as close as possible. But sometimes it feel like nothing fits lol!!

      Thank you, Abi!! And yess!!! I totally do with books too! Phoebe Wood and I were just talking about that on her stream the other day, how we use books the same way. It's always helpful for my brain to see how someone else does something successfully, then try to apply it to my own work.

    Thank you for the useful tips! My genre is fantasy, so I've seen/watched Shadow and bone and The Witcher, so that just leaves the GOT pilot to check out.

    Cool videos. What advice would you give to someone who starts a lot of scripts but can't finish one.
    This video got me to start watching Shadow and Bones and The Witcher. Thanks.

    For a series (whether mini or full) do you think it would be a good idea to have a list of characters to be introduced later or an overarc of the season/series?

    • @BeccaCSmith
      @BeccaCSmith  2 года назад

      I think it might. I probably would. Because even thinking of the example of The Witcher, Yennefer is such a huge character and the fact that they didn't introduce her until the second episode is really fascinating. It makes me wonder how many series have done that before with a lead character and I just didn't notice or remember because it felt so organic to the storytelling!
