I think there’s always something to be said about pure and simple clean layering style and how good it looks. I think these paints are made well for that, as the video shows. Good job!
Agree completely - I feel loads more satisfaction from layering up from a primer and taking my time - results to be proud of and I find it more relaxing too
I also bought the full paint range to support Duncan. I like the philosophy behind the triad system & I think it’s a real boon for folks getting into miniatures. Knowing which paints work together in a progression from dark to light really helps. I also like the formulation of the various paints. I hope Duncan can scale up production & get on store shelves with these at some point.
I like this series of paint range testing videos, but honestly my favorite part is watching you use techniques outside your comfort zone and being so pleased with the results.
I've been very curious about these paints ever since the announcement. Duncan got me started in mini painting with his tutorials from his Games Workshop days. Those videos are still the gold standard for painting videos as far as I'm concerned. The coverage on them seems really good and you are right, yellow is a great thing to judge a range on. That is the colour that many manufacturers will struggle with getting right.
I backed the Kickstarter. I haven't used the majority of them yet, but the ones that I have used have been very nice. I loved the black and the reds especially and also the brown wash. I've seen some people have had trouble with certain colors being really thick when they got them, but I haven't encountered that yet either. I'm glad you tried the yellow triad in the video. I think it turned out really good.
I was interested in these paints when the kickstarter launched but didn't have the funds to take part in it. Glad to hear the reviews of them seem to be consistent with minor differences but they seem to be opinion based while the overall consensus is they are solid paints. I hope my local place stocks them so I can try them out myself Great video as always Andy :)
I had wondered how well these paints would work and your review answered a lot of questions I had. I agree that yellow is a real test of a manufactures paint and the color went on very nicely. Thanks for making this and sharing it.
I think that came out great. I had originally wanted to back this kickstarter but it came at a bad time for me. The paints look good. Once it's widely available I'm sure I'll be picking some up.
while the Duncan paints seem nice I am a bit worried about the price... At the moment they apparently are more expensive than Citadel everywhere I've looked, almost along the lines of Scale 75 and Monument Hobbies but no one who has reviewed the Duncan paints can ever give a good reason for it since the quality of them don't seem to match the more premium miniature paint brands. It just seems weird to make them so expensive when there already are so many paint brands out there doing pretty much the same thing.
I only checked them there after I read shout message. And yes I am now to a little surprise by the price. Seams a bit strange. But maybe it had to do with being manufactured in England. Mite be causing problems.
Based on the reviews I’ve seen so far these seem like really solid paints, I’m planning to pick up the metallics specifically once my GW ones run out, and maybe swapping out more of my paints for the other matching GW colors over time. Since I don’t have to take the time to transfer these to dropper bottles.
Great video! Great to see the results you achieved in contrast without messing around with washes. I just got wave 1 and 2 and cannot wait to pain up some minis this weekend!
You’ve done a great job painting this model. I’m a big fan of painting triads. Love Vallejo paints but a lack of a triad make it more difficult for me as a paint by numbers hobbyists. Hope to see Duncan succeed with this venture and thanks for posting.
Hello, first of all, I'm impressed by the results! About "triad coulour system", I purchased the book Foundry Miniatures Painting & Modeling Guide by Kevin Dallimore which is in depth tutorial of miniatures painting using this principle. The cool stuff about this book is it teaches you by using 1 layer, then 2 layer then 3 layer and the result you should expect. There is one particular minis where he compares the 3 "level" of painting. I recommend you to look for this book as it will apply superbly with Duncan's paint range. Good job!
My game shop just started carrying these. Picked up a bottle of Dragon's Gold, as I was looking for a Retributor replacement, and damn is it a good paint. Went ontop of a black primer with two coats and looks great.
Yes I really thought at first it would just be an average paint brand with an influencer's name but I should have known better from Duncan-it's super good! and yes the metallics are are awesome
they're very nice. much better consistency than GW's and just as good a finish. I use army painter metallics on rank and file troops where I don't care as much about the outcome, and GW metallics on stuff like Heresy marines. I think the AP metallics are fine, but I would happily replace them and the citadel metallics just with the duncan paints. Only issue I've had overall is that the washes are thick and very dark, and quite matt so not what I'm used to, and the paint is thick af in the bottle after a long time in transit, so you need to shake em good.
I think I must have bought the same level of kickstarter that you did, because our boxes have identical contents. I haven't tried the paints yet because my autistic brain is locked on using up some of what I already have before getting stuck into Duncan's paints. I'm glad the triad system is working for you Andy, and I'm hoping to have similar success. I really did get the paints based on Duncan's reputation alone, and so far there's been a lot of good feedback. I know Ninjon was a little "meh" on the subject and pretty much dismissed the triad system altogether, but that's a fine looking rat ogre you've painted up. I for one appreciate the triad idea because I'm not the best at selecting an appropriate shadow, midtone, and highlight.
GW has been using the triad system for a long time now. The problem with how GW sells and DR sells it, is that GW runs interference with their washes, and you forget that you CAN just layer up from Bugman's and etc. Either way, that mini looks SUPER nice!
I note that the box included a pack of steel shakers but I don’t think you mentioned whether you added these to the paint before use, or made any comment on how much shaking they need, which is a topic of concern with some paints. It seems a bit strange that the manufacturer has apparently recognised the importance of thorough mixing to the extent of including steel shakers in the Kickstarter sets, but not put them in the paint as a standard feature, as quite a few other companies do.
I really am down with the triad system. My biggest issue when painting is knowing what colors to use for the base, med, higlight color. I'm bummed I missed the kickstarter on this! I would of backed it for the full set for sure. Do we know when thy will be released and we can purchase them? I'd love to get a few triad sets myself! P.S. your model looked freaking amazing btw!
@@MediocreHobbies And you manage to keep the tip for some time? All the brushes I use tend to basically turn into small flat brushes after a while. They still serve their use for 95% of the models, but smaller details can be problematic to do with those.
I don’t think the triads are wrong it’s slightly exaggerated but I think at the scale you have too I started exaggerating my layer steps and it started looking better.
Now this is a video I will enjoy watching. Let's see what you say and if this changes anything:) Vallejo is such a superb color-manufacter and my go-to :-) Besides it's quite interesting to see you deviate from the contrasts
Yeah for me everything gets compared to Vallejo, great paint for a very accessible price. And the amount of grays and browns is just lovely! The only thing I find Vallejo is lacking is a Mephiston Red equivalent. Unfortunate Duncan’s paints seem to be pretty pricey for Citadel sized bottles. If you try some let me know how they compare 😂
@@sweatilaa5325 hmm i think vallejo's bloody red is very similar to mephiston red, isn't it? i only have vallejo's heavy red, it's a bit darker than mephiston red so i can't say for sure :P

So, I just got kicked from the new Wave 2 kickstarter for criticizing the way they handled Tax. There was a small notice at the very bottom of the campaign.
