      I'd like to see a bit more about crafting in an official sense. I can create up something for my table (to be honest, I'll likely continue to use the rules that we've been using for years; after X sessions it will be complete, scratch off X gold... OR... if there is something they are wanting to craft I'll create a one shot where they go out to find the materials and then at the end of the session we all agree that enough time passes in the downtime between then and the next session so they will have whatever it is they are wanting to make).

    Just FYI, 2014 PHB requires half the cost in materials to craft, not full cost. You even read it right but then misspoke after saying you needed the full cost.
    Has crafting changed? IMO no, the rules in the 2024 PHB are identical to the rule in Xanathar's. Although I'm happy to have it in the PHB now and not in a splat book.

    • @gamemasters
      @gamemasters  2 месяца назад

      this is what it says in the 2014 version: _If something you want to craft has a market value greater than 5 gp, you make progress every day in 5-gp increments until you reach the market value of the item. For example, a suit of plate armor (market value 1,500 gp) takes 300 days to craft by yourself._ Did I misspeak that? I thought that's how I explained it? I can't see anything in it that says it's half the cost in materials?

    • @zug-zug
      @zug-zug 2 месяца назад +3

      @@gamemasters The sentence before is, "For every day of downtime you spend crafting, you can craft one or more items with a total market value not exceeding 5 gp, and you must expend raw materials worth half the total market value."
      Which means each 5 gp increment of the larger item takes one day and costs 2.5gp. I guess one could read it differently and that the "must expend raw materials worth half the total market value," only applies to items worth 5gp or less. But since the greater than 5gp section doesn't state a cost at all IMO, just talks about market value, I have just inferred the cost was the same as for cheap items, you spend 2.5gp per day.
      Otherwise it would get weird with a 5gp item costs 2.5gp to make but a 5gp+1cp item costing 5gp+1cp to make.
      The new PHB explains it much clearer, which is nice. The old wording required some grammatical inference.
      A "funny in how ridiculous it would be" aside... a friend of mine read it as making full plate cost 750gp per day crafted to make. So would cost over 112,000pp. Since it says you. "must expend raw materials worth half the TOTAL MARKET VALUE" (emphasis mine)

    My issue with the new crafting system is that while some things are quicker to craft now but still take time, some things that were craftable over a long rest are now no longer craftable over that time, or are only such if one has the Crafter feat. So for instance, if you want to be that guy who makes alchemist’s fire for your own use, now each one is going to take you 5 days, and before under Xanathar’s you could make them as part of a long rest. Archers used to be able to whittle themselves arrows overnight with woodcarver’s tools. Now a full 8 hour workday is the time floor for making anything. It makes it so that only campaigns with significant downtime can even use most of the crafting rules. They need to have variant rules for different types of campaigns in the DMG

    • @gamemasters
      @gamemasters  Месяц назад

      especially considering someone can make a potion of healing in only 8 hours.. and it's the same cost as alchemist's fire.. However, a pack of 20 arrows costs 1gp, so you could, in theory, make many over the course of an 8 hour long rest. Crafting something doesn't _have_ to be only done in down time.

    Looks like 3rd-level _Spell Scrolls_ are your best bet. They're powerful enough to be useful throughout an adventure, but without taking TOO much time to craft. It piggybacks off of this, but I'd love to know more about the Crafter Origin feat, but more specifically, what the Fast Crafting Table is that the feat talks about, how that works, and what it meant by "lasts until you finish another Long Rest." Basically, if I create a torch, whether I use it or not, it only lasts for 1 day?

    • @gamemasters
      @gamemasters  2 месяца назад +1

      I'll cover the Crafting Feat in a different video (when I cover feats), but how it works is sortav how you described it. If you create a Torch, it will last until you finish another long rest, then it falls apart (I imagine it to be closer to... the wrappings are all burned away or the fuel to keep it lit is consumed). You made it quickly so you just hobbled some materials together to "make it work" for that time frame.
      Where I have a hard time wrapping my head around that concept is in regards to ball bearings or an iron pot. Those are pretty substantial so.. I can't logically figure out how they would wear out once you've taken another long rest.

    Also I don't like that it's still inconsistent, a healing potion costs 50 GP, same as the Heavy Crossbow from the example, yet it costs a single day instead of 5 days. Heck, it should be 50 gp per day instead of 10 gp per day to make sense of it.
    I also appreciate that they reduced significantly the cost of each scroll, but still seems arbitrary. I much prefer the 3.5 rules in which the cost of the scroll is the spell level x caster level x 25 gp

      yeah, I'm not terribly a fan of how crafting works. I'll likely revert back to how we've done it for years: want to make a scroll? You'll need to know the spell and have some parchment and a writing implement. However long it would take to cast it, it takes 4 times as long to write it down. Once done, that spell is spent from your spell slot. This means that a spell that would take 1 minute to cast takes about 4 minutes to write down. 'course, to regain the spell would require rest.. so.. BUT it's something you can do in down time as well.

    I'm curious about how the finished form of Bastions shook out.
    with regard to crafting systems- I'm a little disappointed. As a real life crafter, and somebody who has character concepts like the half orc arcane trickster with a desire to collect broken things use mend and improve the quality of thrown away items, running a side business as a traveling merchant, which opens doors for parties and adds legitimacy to travel and transaction. Or a ranger using foraged materials to make arrows, bow string, slings etc to trade in towns for metal parts for making daggers and hafting spear heads. I'd have liked to see a bit more robust crafting systems, that are more realistic timewise. It should be possible to replace all the arrows lost in a day, with foraged materials during the rest stops and watch at night. Equipping everybody with sling, darts, staves, javelins, etc often, and even selling surplus for trade doesn't break the game, not many players will give up adventuring to do the traveling merchant/crafter life.

    An idea has been floating around that involves thief rogues using spell scrolls of true strike on their bonus actions. Consuming the material component to craft the scroll makes this so janky!
    The spell reads, if my source is right: "you make one attack with the weapon used in the Spell's casting".
    Could I use this to make longbow attacks despite not having two free hands or proficiency, if the crafter is proficient and wants to consume a longbow for every scroll? Wild.
    (common sense would suggest that only COSTLY components should be consumed in the crafting, and that the scroll's user would still need to provide their own material component, the weapon, in this one particular case. But both of these are contrary to the rules as written.)

    • @gamemasters
      @gamemasters  2 месяца назад

      I get what you are say, this is how I would handle it at my table...
      A longbow is a two handed heavy martial ranged weapon. True Strike requires the weapon be of at least 1 copper in worth (a long bow is since it is worth about 50gold), but.. one must also be proficient in it to use true strike. True Strike is available to bards, sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards and they can only be proficient in simple weapons. A longbow is not a simple weapon, therefore they could not scribe trues strike for a long bow.
      Now, let's assume you wanted to still go for a ranged weapon, that is also simple that those classes _could_ be proficient in, you'd be able to use a dagger, handaxe, javelin, light hammer, or a spear. We'll go with Javelin just to make it as silly as we can, because.. like.. a javelin could easily be as tall as a longbow.. plus it also qualifies since it's worth 5 silver. As the scribe to scroll reads, it would indeed consume the javelin, but I don't know too many casters that are going to go with being proficient with a javelin.. I mean.. if they wanted to just so that they could scribe true strike.. okay.. sure? But at a certain point, it's going to become a detriment to the class. Make it a daggr instead and I can see that making sense. BUT.. let's face it.. a good amount of the time players don't do things because it makes sense hahahaha

      that's part of what I was referring to when I talk about wanting to see this portion expanded. I'm fine homebrewing but having something to base it off of would be better. That all said, however, I'd be curious to know how many tables actually do crafting on a session to session basis. I mean.. we've had a few adventures where the players will roll out and seek out some raw materials and perhaps have a random encounter or two, and then in game craft stuff, but aside from that (which doesn't happen all that often) they just don't craft things.
      What I DO use, however, if a basic time table for when they hire someone (a blacksmith for example) so that they know roughly when the item will be completed.

    • @TiberiusX
      @TiberiusX 2 месяца назад

      @gamemasters I also tend to have craftsmen do most of the actual crafting. It's getting the ingredients and having an actual recipe I'd like. Even, at minimum, I would like for a section in the DMG that includes every item that can be crafted after harvesting from a MM monster, like aboleth mucus, or a beholder stomach for bags of holding.
      I want exploration generation, give my herbalist 20-100 plants per region that can be used in potion brewing, and give my barbarian a list of tusks and horns that can imbue magto thier weapon.
      I don't actually think specific rules on how to craft things are so important as knowing what things my players could use in crafting. The way they talked about it, I guess I was too hopeful that they'd expand it to more than just spending money on materials.
      So now I'm going through Ad&d and BG3 crafting to pick and choose what I want for now, I guess.

      Also, thank you for your answer :)

    So most of the time just use fabricate?

      fabricate is only available to the artificer and wizard. If I'm a bard, rogue, barbarian, fighter, cleric, etc, I won't be able to cast it. :(

      @@gamemasters good point but will an average craftsman be able to compete with a local wizard fabricating? I think from a world building perspective it's kind of silly that someone would take 150 days to make something a wizard can whip together in ten minutes. I still love the changes and enjoy having the crafting options especially with the new discount cutting it in half.

    For me crafting is as as bad as before just made faster, and making money is always way faster then spending time crafting it.

      yeah, we rarely used crafting rules. I kindav just did what made sense. You want to craft a dozen or so arrows? Okay, you'd need some flint and some sticks, spend some down time and it's done. I don't think I'll have my table get into this micro-manage system of crafting. It's neat, and it gives me some ideas, but ultimately, I don't like the micro of it.

    New Crafting rules are great. Not only giving the players some basics that they ar eentitled to, but also keeping powerful options under the DMs contorl, THAts a nice balanbce. The New rules ar esimple but thats the beauty of it. There will be 3rd party rules ocming that build off of this, ONe for my table, one for someone elses table, and another for asomeone elses table, and NOOONE is locked into a crafting system that doesnt work at their table. becuz EVERY table is different.

      agreed, every table is different and I think that's one of the things that I appreciate about d&d's approach outside of adventures, it is open enough to allow DMs to craft up whatever they want (not in terms of item crafting but in regards to world building). Given... some would prefer to not have to develop as much (I have certainly seen my fair share of comments "why do I have to do their jobs for them??!") and I will admit that I would love to see more lore driven books released.. but.. I'm still happy with being able to create my own home brew worlds.
