Here i am thinking I'd be in for an hour long summary of someone awesome but, I truly appreciate the thurough explanation on obtaining passwords. Short and sweet is always neat! Thanks Jack!
I’m really bad at making unique, secure passwords. So every time I need a password for something, I use a Python script I wrote specifically for generating passwords. Instant 20 character password with capital, lowercase, and symbols. If you’re learning a programming language and you want a quick project for practice, make a password generator. You’ll use it more than you think.
I can't imagine how difficult it is to choose a job in the battle against these crooks. The history must not be disregarded!!Respect to the Dale Valskov crew for taking up this responsibility and combating scammers.
do you know how to hack a roblox account? (im trying to hack my hacked roblox account back roblox support can't help i tried every year but i don't have an email attached)
One that wasn't mentioned here in the social engineering section is that even if you can't figure out their password, you can almost certainly figure out the answers to their security questions using publicly available information about them. With a very weak security question, you can reset the password on many sites. That's why I generate long and complicated security question answers and treat them as a secondary password.
@@johnsmith4982 and by saying your name is john smith which is brilliant by the way. i really did date a true john smith once when i was young and i was on probation and he threatened to put me in jail i had to go downstairs and get his license and prove it really was his name. his brothers name is jim and his sister is jenn. i asked him once if his parents let the hospital name them? lol i never thought to make the security question nonsense. sometimes i feel really stupid although my iq and gpa would suggest otherwise. i hate that i have to learn some things by suffering first.
Or not even publicly available info. Family members will know your mother's maiden name. But of course, family members could never be 'problematic', could they?
I remember when I accidentally stumbled on the entire user directory at my HS. From there many things you've mentioned got me access into everything, I even got in trouble because of someone who defaced the school website... It was locally hosted
Oh man, that reminds me of a forgotten memory. Where my school created us all accounts but told us our password is our last name. And I went into other peoples accounts this way and left little easter eggs for them to find someday in their files.
@@JackRhysider I did something similar 2 days ago, I saw a pattern in how my HS passwords were created (second, third letter of name followed by second, third and fourth letter of surname and then 123) and I hacked into some friends, ofc I didn't do anything bad but still nice
Mike Sledge, you wouldn't happen to have gone to highschool in PA would you've? A friend gave me a floppy with the WEP key for the wifi, but it was full of other stuff but I copied it all to my laptop anyway. Someone defaced the website and while I was out sick, the school banned all electronic devices. Not knowing this, I came back to school with my laptop and the cops came, and found spreadsheets with every student and faculties PII. There were 4 of us they patsied, and one was a Mike, but the last name's escaping me. If it's you I'm equal parts surprised, but not surprised to find you here haha. But maybe it's not you!

A fun one they didn't mention. If you could get access to email spam service. They usually will scan URLs in the email, this would include the password reset link
Hashing wifi passwords is getting way less practical here in the UK. Ten characters, alphanumeric, case sensitive is getting pretty common now so you need more GPU muscle than Chinese crypto farm to dent those numbers. PS: Never run a TOR exit node on the free WiFi provided by the local police station. They get VERY upset 😉
I am currently retired. In the past I did database applications. Talk about weak passwords, one of the managers used a very weak password. He couldn't remember his password to an employee database. So I opened the db and low and behold, there was his password: 12345. After a reprimand, I had the manager change his password to something more secure. Btw, one of the methods that was used in the past were screen scrappers for green screens running on pc's. Another was the use of the fact that older monitors could be read at a distance via radio waves. That was a favorite of our beloved government.
@@JackRhysider It is sad that so many IT Managers don't take security more seriously. Even when we were setting up our first access points and repeaters, I had to argue with the manager over internet security; this was back in the late 90s. He opted to not put passwords on the units. I argued that this would open our intranet to being hacked. I just don't understand this mentality.
A few years ago I was living in a house that had no internet...I noticed a strong wifi signal with a random name and assumed it was from my nearest neighbour so entered their address as a password, viola! I was in...6 months later the wifi disappeared but there was another strong signal with the name "try and guess our password now" haha

However, watching this video have answered to all the questions. Thanks for taking your time to put this together for people like me *usespy online.*
So many people have their passwords saved in their web browser. They are always very easy to access. Some browsers ask the user to authenticate before viewing the full list of passwords, but one can easily see individual saved passwords by going into the login page of a website and viewing inspect element once it’s auto filled. This is really easy to do, and doesn’t actually take much time. People may walk away from a computer that’s logged in.

At first, I hated web security. Usually, in software engineering, you don't have to get it right the first time because you can always improve it later. Iterative development is the basis of software engineering. However, in web security, you MUST get it right the first time. It is a pretty daunting task. However, by watching videos like these and learning how exactly hackers hack, I can understand exactly how to beat them. Videos like this make web security seem more manageable.
It’s so funny hearing about key logger usbs, back in Highschool me and some of the smart kids put some money together to buy one and we ended up getting our Spanish teachers password. First we changed grades then they reset it so we got it again and just viewed stuffed and made minor tweaks(removing phone numbers from student files, opting out of emails to parents for no attendance, then we got an admins login and all hell broke loose. The school covered up a semester because the grades were changed in mass and the site they used didn’t a rollback feature. Some got fixed but most ended up with As and Bs that year
@@Lunatic5306 we were freshman, don’t fret it wasn’t more than $15 it was just shipping it, we had to decide who it would go to and it ended up being me so I had to cover the fast shipping, so in all 20-25 for the little thing. Thankfully it was enough of us pitching in that we really only paid 3-4 each for the actual keylogger. I’ll admit I learned after that I could’ve done it with a simple usb laying around and a GitHub repo but either way we sent a message to our school that they need to take us more serious, there were multiple meanings behind it but the main message was to give us respect like young adults.
Honestly, Dale Valskov I'm amazed by your consistent ability to deliver exceptional work every single time. Your willingness to lend a helping hand during my time of need is deeply appreciated. I like this Jack. Taking something that can string into a list worksbwith your great storytelling and interview skills. As I listen to past works, you often express great interest, hinting at deeper thoughts, in a particularly notable insight gleaned along the way through working a story. A recent example I heard was the seemingly strong and consistent code of honor seen among darkness vendors for example. Selling "safe" rec drugs while refusing to allow the same for clearly harmful ones, the likes of krokadil comes to mind. Maybe expanding on one of those is another path you can take to compelling content. That all said, I have learned a lot and have really enjoyed your work. The stories of these people are super compelling! Live well Jack, and thank you.

Great video, Jack. Very informative, clear, and concise. You provided a ton of information and methods on this topic. I feel sort of bad for heckling you a bit on one of your interviews where you got a bit chatty in the editing. It might've not came across as constructive criticism, but that's how I meant it. This was a very good video. Probably the best one I've seen on cyber security that relates to this aspect of it. Nice job.
I don't mind a heckler. You'll never be a bigger heckler than me about my show. I brutally tear my own show apart ripping pieces out, redoing things, and throwing out whole episodes sometimes. It's just part of the craft and for you to have opinions about it is fine with me. Keep em coming.
@@JackRhysider I appreciate that outlook. Still, I wanted to mention anyway since it was a video that came across my feed through the algorithm and the only one I watched prior to this one which came via the algorithm too. I subbed after watching this one. Good work. Very informative.

Twenty or so years ago I made a fake hotmail log in screen for my friends at my house. It would capture credentials and then forward the browser to the real hotmail. I’d observe their actions and they would think it was a glitch and type their info again. Then I’d show them what I’d done telling them to be more careful. Lol
An employee left their password on their desk and I was responsible for security lockup. I tried it on their computer and it worked. I reported it. I got in trouble and they did not. A year later, someone else did a similar thing. Knowing that I got into so much trouble for reporting insider problems, I just left a note for them not to leave such stuff lying around. They reported me for "rifling around their desk". Wrong, the info was obvious without touching their desk. I got in trouble again. But I knew I was right and they were not. I was severely retaliated against by upper management I reported to the IG office. After the investigation, I was right and everyone else was wrong. I got a little respect for having the balls to hang upper level management. A few years later, I had to work with the first person again. They STILL did not care about network and workplace security. They were retaliating against me by deleting my actual work from the network. My supervisor was so astonished I suggested that was happening he could not believe it. And did not. Yeah, by far, insider flaws are the worst security of all. Especially when no one cares. I took an early retirement. I could see the writing on the wall. I have dozens of more serious examples, but they dealt with security issues, not insider personnel problems. Worse of all? My assigned job was not a security or computer job. If I could find these problems when I was not looking for them every day, wow! One certain company is in serious jeopardy.
I remember doing some of these things before. I used to get the library's password and it gave me access to everything but I wasn't doing anything to cause anything until other people started doing it and they were making a mess of things and I had to remember how everything was set up so I could fix it for them until they caught on to what was going on that was when they had some IT people that they hired that's when it became known how and what was happening so they started blocking us from seeing what they were typing. I was using shoulder surfing and recalling where their hands were

So your saying if I call python random a few times I'll get your password?

One that wasn't mentioned here in the social engineering section is that even if you can't figure out their password, you can almost certainly figure out the answers to their security questions using publicly available information about them. With a very weak security question, you can reset the password on many sites. That's why I generate long and complicated security question answers and treat them as a secondary password.

The email 'hint' is circular: you'd need the password to their email to receive any password (reset link) via their email!
A fun one they didn't mention. If you could get access to email spam service. They usually will scan URLs in the email, this would include the password reset link
you can access email with browser cookie files
Hashing wifi passwords is getting way less practical here in the UK. Ten characters, alphanumeric, case sensitive is getting pretty common now so you need more GPU muscle than Chinese crypto farm to dent those numbers.
PS: Never run a TOR exit node on the free WiFi provided by the local police station. They get VERY upset 😉
I’m curious how upset..

13:41 you see 12345 is the 8th most common password.

Some browsers ask the user to authenticate before viewing the full list of passwords, but one can easily see individual saved passwords by going into the login page of a website and viewing inspect element once it’s auto filled.

At first, I hated web security. Usually, in software engineering, you don't have to get it right the first time because you can always improve it later. Iterative development is the basis of software engineering. However, in web security, you MUST get it right the first time. It is a pretty daunting task. Some got fixed but most ended up with As and Bs that year
Not so smart considering you can get a key logger for free. How much money did y’all get ripped off? I mean put together?

Thankfully it was enough of us pitching in that we really only paid 3-4 each for the actual keylogger. I’ll admit I learned after that I could’ve done it with a simple usb laying around and a GitHub repo but either way we sent a message to our school that they need to take us more serious, there were multiple meanings behind it but the main message was to give us respect like young adults.
