I think in a way, it helps those who can’t speak out about their anxiety feel relatable. I know many guys who kind of bottle their emotions and hide away with smiles. I think in a way this feels real everyone overlooks him because he looks put together on the outside vs breaking down on the inside
some people sometimes say heartstopper is too happy and there’s no realism in it. but the show also recognizes things like anxiety, depression, self harm and anorexia.
@@TheyluvvHaley actually not SA, but mostly toxic relationships. like ben and charlie and how people like ben see people like charlie as their possessions.
Not unsupported, tbf. Sarah and Charlie have always been there for him, and the friend group to a lesser degree. The problem is, Nick feels that his issues aren't as important or as urgent as others, particularly Charlie's. They're very alike in that way, they both would do anything for the people they care about even as they ignore their own needs. Charlie's are just more... blatant, and more dangerous. 😭💔 Our boys deserve to be happy, both of them. Everyone who's ever made them feel bad needs to take a long walk off a short pier.
Charlie is literally ride or die for Nick. Even though he’s the one getting bullied and has all the serious mental health problems, he constantly throws himself on grenades to protect Nick, to make sure he doesn’t go through with what Charlie has had to endure. He’s also incredibly forgiving and patient when Nick is unable to protect Charlie when he needs to. Nick’s fear and anxiety often means that Charlie needs to divert the bullies’ attention away from Nick, lie to his friends about their relationship, which almost jeopardizes the few friendships Charlie has, and accept that he can’t be open about a relationship he’s proud of, making him feel, as Tao says ‘a little bit crap about himself’. Nick’s position is totally understandable, and we see that he tries hard and feels guilty about making Charlie go through similar feelings that he had with Ben, but his fears and anxiety mean that he is repeatedly letting Charlie down, which is frustrating because he’s older, stronger and more popular than Charlie. In theory, he should be the one who’s able to protect Charlie, but more often than not, it’s the other way around.
@@graphiquejack They're human. It happens, unfortunately. Nick already gets enough flak for not being "realistic" enough, for being this perfect dream boyfriend and all that. Shouldn't drag him for _not_ being that. He can't always be the one to protect Charlie in any case, as that's a disservice to Charlie and how strong and resilient _he_ is. These two protect _each other,_ and that's how it should be.
@@mycatwhiskers I agree that people really don't see Nick's mental health issues. Possibly because Nick is in his head so much, or looking off into space... BTW, season 3 will cover books 4 and 5. In one of those books, Nick says that he feels weaker than Charlie, because (as he said in 1x5), he felt that his entire personality had been buried for 16 years -- not just his sexuality, but all aspects of it. In one of the other books, he says that he worries about going away to UNI and trying to be 'long distance' -- because he does not know who he is without Charlie. I hope season 3 delves more into those ideas.
I’m watching season 3 and I love seeing how far they both have come in their relationship and the communication still needs some work but for teenagers the are surprisingly more mature than most adults
Having watched s3 we really got the proof that Charlie’s mental health problems weren’t Nick’s fault. I think he did the best he could in s1 and I was always so proud of him for realising things so fast
They were never at fault, it's just that Charlie needed that someone who understood him and Nick needed that someone who wanted to understand him which is why Charlie says that is what made their love special, they both felt understood
Heartstopper is literally the best series ... Like it just is soooo much more than just a love story .. the way it includes soo soo soo many topics like From various types of Sexuality to family problems, ED ,mental and emotional health ,family, friends, society , education ,and many more ... Heartstopper is just a masterpiece and everyone must watch it
Nick was ready to talk to Tao even if he knew Tao hated him. He had no one else to talk to. Also, Tao understood. Nick handled that like such a man, as did Tao.
Charlie wanted to set Nick free in this episode just because he thought he's going to ruin Nick's life. But so many people still have a thought that there was no one to support Nick in his situation. They are absolutely perfect and support each other. It's sad people keep invalidating Charlie's character.
people always crap on toa for being mean to nick and yes he is harsh but that’s his thing. toa is the straight up character hes brutally honest! and it’s really nicks anxiety that’s makes toas brutal advice unhelpful
I think everyone who has seen Heartstopper knows that it's mostly about Charlie's eating disorder, Ben's bullying, how nice it is to love someone, a little bit of Nick's anxiety. And his daddy issues, some more things, right?, like self-discovery, etc., but I would like them to also focus a little more on the anxiety and panic attack that Nick had, I think it's something important for them to show, but in itself it's my opinion, which is fine, I love Heartstopper.
I like how this show explored a little bit the issue of being out and dating someone who’s still in the closet (and vice-versa). It can be really really tough and even damaging.
My favorite scene was at the end of episode 8 during the school ending rugby match and he was about to make the game ending shot and didn't see Charlie cheering for him or waving, and how he basically threw the game, went over to him and grabbed him off the field and went into the school corridor, in tears confessed his feelings for him and the Charlie grabbing him and kissing him and then the romantic date on the beach!
As someone who is in no way ready to be out to my dad this absolute soul crushing anxiety is real. My dad’s a good guy, I k ow he would abuse or disown me and he’s not homophobic but I get a lot of my own issues from him. But m more scared of what he could say then of what he would actually do
Can y’all see Nick’s face/eyes shift in the moment when Tao says “he probably wants to be something more than secret guy you kiss sometimes on the down low” when he’s thinking that’s exactly what Ben did to Charlie… or is it just me that notices that?
Nick's anxiety needs to be more recognized.
Fr
Yeah because we know that Nick is not ready for come out not because he's ashamed of Charlie but his anxiety hit hard
