    I just moved into a new apartment and a donkey who lives behind me in a very small grazing area and nowhere for him to retreat in the weather. I have been feeding him some type of molasses feed that the chow me to give him he is hungry every day. I give him a note every morning in addition to a couple carrots and celery, I have had some hay sent to his owner. I pray, h his owner will give it to him. I gave him some bedding hey to put in a little stable I see out there and I also gave him some Timothy grass. I guess it’s Timothy grass it might be alfalfa is this OK anyway just wanted to let you guys know to be praying for me because I love this donkey already. The only donkey I had ever seen was on a RUclips video and I loved it. He has birds all over him and I went to the owner once and suggested he get them off and he did but they just come back. I have heard that you can’t cut the bar bush down because it just gets bigger, any advice you can give me I would really appreciate it and what kind of mineral lake does he need? Don’t think he’s a here though. I think he’s a nothing as far as his sex but he’s real cute.

    I've got horses, donkey and mini mule all on scrub pasture. I feed soaked Timothy pellets to them all, no grain. I will add oats and alfalfa pellets to the Timothy if needed to keep or add weight if needed.
    I have different ages and breeds and most days up to 6-8 hours on one horse. My oldest horse is 28 and hard keeper and does well on this diet. She doesn't get ridden hard or daily.
    I feed big sky minerals in the pellets instead of cal trace. Imo just as good and more economical. They get Redmond's loose salt free choice and a white salt block because they like it.

      In the summer not often.. since there is so much forage here. But in the winter every day.

    I think it should be law to make sure EVERY animal in captivity have adequate shelter or the owner must be fined daily until they get off their inconsiderate butts and do it.

    Hi, I planning on getting a couple of donkeys as just pets for my 40 acre farm in the high country, Half the farm is a walnut planation, how will the donkeys go roaming the plantation, can they eat them or will it make them sick

    • @DonkeyListener
      @DonkeyListener  4 года назад

      black walnut is toxic to all equine. It can even give them laminitis if they stand on the hauls or wood..Not sure about english walnut

      @@timtelford1189 I have a 6 acre pasture with walnuts and oak as well as apples and california native brush and crappy grass and weeds. The mules would nibble on the walnut and the oak and despite what people say, never got sick. I figure with free access to shitty grass and other browse they can figure out what will make them sick. I never saw the horse eat it. I just got a donkey and he hasn't gotten sick either.

    Hello, I just received two mini donkeys form a friend that can no longer care for. One is a Jack he is a little under weight and the female who is pregnant. My question for you is will miniature horse and pony feed be good for them because that’s what I picked up. I also picked up a mineral block made for cows and horses. Is that ok?

    • @DonkeyListener
      @DonkeyListener  2 года назад +1

      No.. if you feed them any kind of pony or horse food they will get fat. Donkeys and especially minis shouldn’t have bagged food.
      Mineral blocks from local feed stores are usually made with molasses .. not good either! Watch my video on which mineral I give and I have an article on my website about feeding donkeys

      @@DonkeyListener I did take your advice on the pink salt lick because I was able to find that at my local feed store. I feed my other animals Timothy hay, so I think that will work for the donkeys instead of buying the pellets. Right now I have a very stocked pasture full of grass, so they have been grazing in their half acre area and getting nothing extra. I’m having a hard time finding a mineral for them at our feed store. I’ll keep an eye out for the apple cider vinegar and kale. 🙂
      Thank you for all your help!!! Iv noticed there really isn’t a lot of information that I can find on line about donkeys. Iv owned horses and I currently own Boer goats and cows, but never donkeys. Lol

    When you say free choice hay, does that mean they have full access 24/7 to hay in winter?

    What do you feed an overweight donkey? My donkey is 11.3 hands tall, and he weight approximately 490-510 lbs. He carries most of his weight in his mid-section. It is difficult for me to restrict his hay intake as we have other animals in the same pasture, he cannot be put in a stall all the time, as he gets depressed by himself. I have a grazing muzzle for him, but after a few days of wearing it, it rubs sores on his nose, so I have to leave it off till it heals. I used to feed him Teff grass pellets, because they are high fiber, low sugar and starch, but I stopped because he got picky and prefered our good fermented hay. I know he is not in very good shape, he doesn’t have a lot of muscle, and I just want him to be healthy. Any tips you can give me would be very much appreciated! Thank you!

      I feed overweight donkeys low sugar hay in a slow feeder. No grass. If you can’t restrict hay try feeding a lower sugar hay.. like crap grass or tuff hay.
      If you’re Feeding unlimited good hay he’ll likely just keep getting bigger and will eventually have really bad health problems

      Try a thin line grazing muzzle attached to a breakaway halter so if he gets hung up, the crown piece breaks and is replaceable. They don't seem to rub.
      Spring, summer and fall until after frost are seasons for muzzle. Summertime if you live in hot area leave muzzle off during day if outside. They spend most of day in shade so limit their own grass intake. Put muzzle back on about 5 and leave overnight because that's when they gorge.
      You can also buy elastikon tape and wrap it around area of muzzle that's rubbing. Same stuff hikers use to prevent blisters.
      Even if the sores are on the nose where pushing down to eat, the tape works just don't cover holes up.
      Hope this helps you.
