With all the things they could be doing...drunken parties, trashing the land, mercilessly killing wildlife, dumping chemicals, having junk cars, burning trash....but instead fixing up the cabin, planting a garden & fruit trees, building a wood shed, taking pics of foliage and chopping wood...seems pretty shady to me...🙄

Just coming here to say that. Those busy bodies have no right to be on your land without permission. I would definitely talk to a lawyer about that! Also, don't wait until they get all their "legal stuff" in order so they can just dump it on you after not contacting you at all. Be ready with your own legal defense. If they were shady about coming on your property unannounced, I would expect more of the same shady behavior moving forward.

I hope everything works out well. However, I would like to tell you one thing you should consider. Your problem may not be with the building itself, but with the aspect of being next to running water. As you may already know, in Massachusetts you cannot do anything other than pile firewood within 200 feet of flowing water, and even if you want to place a stepping stone, you need permission from the town. If an enforcement order is received, the situation becomes very serious. In that case, you may need to hire a very expensive environmental expert and spend a lot of money and time. It doesn't have to be negative, but I think you need to know this information. Once again I pray that everything goes well.
I would wonder whether this cottage/house that surely existed BEFORE such a law was passed would give it grandfather rights new development wouldn't receive. Surely such a law did not exist in bygone years. Sadly, when you say someone would need permission to place a stepping stone points to the anger many feel at the intrusiveness of regulations. A stepping stone? Wow! And I'm a fan of environmental regulations.
At one time I remember thinking “Man, there is a lot of work to do on that cabin. It is going to take forever to finish it!” Yet, it is basically done and you have made it beautiful. Hi Kyle: I live in a neighboring Hilltown, and I used to serve on the town Board of Heath. There was a Board of Health regulation which stated that cabins ( such as the ones on Windsor Pond) had to have a source of potable water in order to obtain a certificate of occupancy. Thought May want to check out your town’s Board of Health regulations. There may also be some kind of town regulation stating what size structures require a septic system. I do not think your town is out to get or, nor are they trying to ruin your dream. They are enforcing health and safety regulations for the town. My advice is to take out a loan and install a well and a septic tank. You and Allie have put in so much time into that cabin that it would be a shame to lose it
If this is the case, they went about it horribly. Marching onto someone's property without a warrant and accosting the owners about an unknown issue is illegal and dangerous for all involved. In a lot of states, you might end up getting shot for doing something like that.
The property is off grid, purchased fair and square. The towns people have been brewing their accusations for some time. They have no right to trespass on private property. They acted like dicks and if they show up again, the sheriff should be called to remove them for trespassing. There is a way to handle this and a way not to handle this. The towns people chose the wrong way. Kyle and Ally are within their rights. There is no water or power source available so they cannot make those demands. And yes, this is more than likely tied to taxes - isn’t everything?

I don’t share many of the opinions expressed here about building codes and actions of the municipality, but I’m glad that you’re staying and trying to work it out. There are plenty of ways to comply with local laws and remain off grid. Septic systems; well water, and solar power are just the most obvious.

I feel like there's still a lot of missing information. Were they actually "town officials" or were they grumpy neighbors with a grudge? What is the land zoned for? Does "cabin" fall under the "camp" zoning or does it fall into housing? They seem to be going for the "you're living here full time" angle, which you obviously aren't. And you definitely can't put in a septic (and probably not a well) that close to the river for sure.
Just do your thing. I am sure by now you know how people in random places vicariously live through you. As a born and bred Californian I loved New England before i came across your videos a few years back. You literally make me want to sell everything off and move there. You have seemed to bring it to life through your videos and made most of us day dream about living in a place like that. Now, presently, I could only hope to live in a place like that. I may not ever have a chance to get out of California, so for that, don't let them push you around. We know how the heavy hand feels around here. Keep doing what you are doing, these are just more than "videos" to some of us.

Great decision. Hope it all works out for you. We are only seeing your side of the story, but the land and all the work you've done has been such an admirable pleasure to watch. Thank you for sharing it. I also live in the northern part of the country, but on the opposite side. We have beautiful woods and natural settings similar to your area. Sounds like our laws for building also apply there. We must include building permits to include a well and septic system for a structural home. Imagine if everyone who wanted to, built a beautiful cabin in the woods. What would they do with their human and environmental waste? Where would they be harvesting water and dumping their grey water? Risking the local environment with these impacts may be the reason for the disapproval of your neighbors and town. However, if they are really harassing you in the manner you describe, there is no excuse for their nasty behavior. Your videos have been peace for me when I’ve needed it. But peace is rarely appreciated without struggle. Wishing your struggle is just enough to appreciate the peace.
Even if you “off the grid” you are still considered within a town jurisdiction. You have to abide by that town’s laws. I would make sure you have your ducks in a row in knowing what is required. Work with the town. Know the laws. And if necessary have a lawyer.
Find out the name of the complainant to the city. Then look into the backgrounds of all the city employees and determine if there is a nepotism/political agenda to take this action. You also have a right to confront the accuser of the complaint. There can often be a “good ole boys” network in play. Get the best legal advice you can and depose all of the city workers and submit FOIA requests of the city workers on all of their communication, everything connected, internet searches related to the complaint, emails, texts, documents, etc… Glad to see you are not being a sheep. Stand your ground because some will take advantage of their position and feed their authority egos and not follow the true rules/laws and they will try and push you around and make up their own rules to get their way. Put a wolf mentality lawyer in play and educate yourself on your rights - don’t depend on the gov’t for any advice or direction. Put a locked solid sturdy gate up on the property and no trespassing sign and some trail cameras up. Don’t let them fool you with it was an anonymous complaint either and film and record every encounter you have with these people. Best of luck and know these lessons will make you stronger and smarter. On the surface it looks like typical code enforcement bullies throwing their weight around for a puppet master.
Get a lawyer. It’s easy for you to prove that you don’t live there full time. The laws/regs are very clear. They don’t have a case as longs you’re in compliance.

My guess is the board is gonna try n pass ordinances to push you out. They trespassed caused trauma n harm to the two of you and they should be held accountable... Pay attention for board meeting go to them or read the minutes online if available or get hard copies talk to the law and file a complaint... So it is documented, granted you both video taped the incident after it happened, but it's not documented by law enforcement... Just put in the septic and well or an engineered rainwater catchment system and move on with your life. Every municipality in the lower 48 requires those two systems for a structure with a permanent foundation, regardless of you living there full time or not. I have an off-grid home in WA state and went through the same thing you’re dealing with. It sucks, but it’s the reality of building in the US. They will leave you alone once those systems are in place. Best of luck to you.

I hope everything works out well. However, I would like to tell you one thing you should consider. Your problem may not be with the building itself, but with the aspect of being next to running water. As you may already know, in Massachusetts you cannot do anything other than pile firewood within 200 feet of flowing water, and even if you want to place a stepping stone, you need permission from the town. If an enforcement order is received, the situation becomes very serious. In that case, you may need to hire a very expensive environmental expert and spend a lot of money and time. It doesn't have to be negative, but I think you need to know this information. Once again I pray that everything goes well.

I would wonder whether this cottage/house that surely existed BEFORE such a law was passed would give it grandfather rights new development wouldn't receive. Surely such a law did not exist in bygone years. Sadly, when you say someone would need permission to place a stepping stone points to the anger many feel at the intrusiveness of regulations. A stepping stone? Wow! And I'm a fan of environmental regulations.

At one time I remember thinking “Man, there is a lot of work to do on that cabin. It is going to take forever to finish it!” Yet, it is basically done and you have made it beautiful. Hi Kyle: I live in a neighboring Hilltown, and I used to serve on the town Board of Heath. There was a Board of Health regulation which stated that cabins ( such as the ones on Windsor Pond) had to have a source of potable water in order to obtain a certificate of occupancy. Thought May want to check out your town’s Board of Health regulations. There may also be some kind of town regulation stating what size structures require a septic system. I do not think your town is out to get or, nor are they trying to ruin your dream. They are enforcing health and safety regulations for the town. My advice is to take out a loan and install a well and a septic tank. You and Allie have put in so much time into that cabin that it would be a shame to lose it
If this is the case, they went about it horribly. Marching onto someone's property without a warrant and accosting the owners about an unknown issue is illegal and dangerous for all involved. In a lot of states, you might end up getting shot for doing something like that.
The property is off grid, purchased fair and square. The towns people have been brewing their accusations for some time. They have no right to trespass on private property. They acted like dicks and if they show up again, the sheriff should be called to remove them for trespassing. There is a way to handle this and a way not to handle this. The towns people chose the wrong way. Kyle and Ally are within their rights. There is no water or power source available so they cannot make those demands. And yes, this is more than likely tied to taxes - isn’t everything?

I don’t share many of the opinions expressed here about building codes and actions of the municipality, but I’m glad that you’re staying and trying to work it out. There are plenty of ways to comply with local laws and remain off grid. Septic systems; well water, and solar power are just the most obvious.

I feel like there's still a lot of missing information. Were they actually "town officials" or were they grumpy neighbors with a grudge? What is the land zoned for? Does "cabin" fall under the "camp" zoning or does it fall into housing? They seem to be going for the "you're living here full time" angle, which you obviously aren't. And you definitely can't put in a septic (and probably not a well) that close to the river for sure.
Just do your thing. I am sure by now you know how people in random places vicariously live through you. As a born and bred Californian I loved New England before i came across your videos a few years back. You literally make me want to sell everything off and move there. You have seemed to bring it to life through your videos and made most of us day dream about living in a place like that. Now, presently, I could only hope to live in a place like that. I may not ever have a chance to get out of California, so for that, don't let them push you around. We know how the heavy hand feels around here. Keep doing what you are doing, these are just more than "videos" to some of us.
The government’s “heavy hand” these last few years has destroyed our 38-year family business. California is a sinking ship. We’re getting outa here this spring. Get out while you still can - before they build a wall or something and you can’t get out like east Germany.

Great decision. Hope it all works out for you. We are only seeing your side of the story, but the land and all the work you've done has been such an admirable pleasure to watch. Thank you for sharing it. I also live in the northern part of the country, but on the opposite side. We have beautiful woods and natural settings similar to your area. Sounds like our laws for building also apply there. We must include building permits to include a well and septic system for a structural home. Imagine if everyone who wanted to, built a beautiful cabin in the woods. What would they do with their human and environmental waste? Where would they be harvesting water and dumping their grey water? Risking the local environment with these impacts may be the reason for the disapproval of your neighbors and town. However, if they are really harassing you in the manner you describe, there is no excuse for their nasty behavior. Surely, they can act like adults and be open to working out some sort of agreement or compromise in your situation. Best wishes and Happy Holidays!

Even if you “off the grid” you are still considered within a town jurisdiction. You have to abide by that town’s laws. I would make sure you have your ducks in a row in knowing what is required. Work with the town. Know the laws. And if necessary have a lawyer.

Find out the name of the complainant to the city. Then look into the backgrounds of all the city employees and determine if there is a nepotism/political agenda to take this action. You also have a right to confront the accuser of the complaint. There can often be a “good ole boys” network in play. Get the best legal advice you can and depose all of the city workers and submit FOIA requests of the city workers on all of their communication, everything connected, internet searches related to the complaint, emails, texts, documents, etc… Glad to see you are not being a sheep. Stand your ground because some will take advantage of their position and feed their authority egos and not follow the true rules/laws and they will try and push you around and make up their own rules to get their way. Put a wolf mentality lawyer in play and educate yourself on your rights - don’t depend on the gov’t for any advice or direction. Put a locked solid sturdy gate up on the property and no trespassing sign and some trail cameras up. Don’t let them fool you with it was an anonymous complaint either and film and record every encounter you have with these people. Best of luck and know these lessons will make you stronger and smarter. On the surface it looks like typical code enforcement bullies throwing their weight around for a puppet master.
Get a lawyer. It’s easy for you to prove that you don’t live there full time. The laws/regs are very clear. They don’t have a case as longs you’re in compliance.

I'm glad you're going to strive to stay.... The board that trespassed should be held accountable.... If they pursue what they claim.... Fight it, you have a shot... My guess is the board is gonna try n pass ordinances to push you out. They trespassed caused trauma n harm to the two of you and they should be held accountable... Pay attention for board meeting go to them or read the minutes online if available or get hard copies talk to the law and file a complaint... So it is documented, granted you both video taped the incident after it happened, but it's not documented by law enforcement... Just put in the septic and well or an engineered rainwater catchment system and move on with your life. Every municipality in the lower 48 requires those two systems for a structure with a permanent foundation, regardless of you living there full time or not.
I have an off-grid home in WA state and went through the same thing you’re dealing with. It sucks, but it’s the reality of building in the US. They will leave you alone once those systems are in place.
