When I trained at my current job all I did was tig weld coupons for 6-8 hours a day for 6 months. That was about 30 years ago. It made me fast and pretty confident. I wasn’t allowed to weld a real part for that training period. Still welding at the same major airline today after 33 years. Welding part is easy and less time compared to the prep. Very helpful video for getting started into mig or maybe fcaw.
Amazing skill ! My father was a welder and millwright at US Steel. I was worked the summer months and he taught me welding. And went on to trade school in PLUMBING AND Pipefitters Local 91 prior to my father’s relocating he previously worked as a welder ion off shore rigs for Shell Oil. This trade has been very rewarding for a lifetime. Now retired I would highly recommend any young person man or woman to pursue a bright future in this highly demanding profession! Loved watching your skillset!
This was EXTREMELY helpful for a 61-year old neophyte welder. Appreciate you taking the time to tackle some of the fundamental aspects of MIG welding. As always, thanks for sharing. Steve
When I was teaching welding, I couldn't stress enough how clean material will yield a clean(er) weld. That would be a good video for beginners. Teach them right from the beginning and they'll carry that throughout their life.
Thanks for you patience in teaching. I recently purchased a cheapy mig 200 amp welder and even though I am not a certified welder, I thought I should remember how to lay down a fairly decent bead but no matter what I did my weld beads wouldn't lay down, they were always high. I then saw you do a video on using straight Argon and I said that's what my weld beads look like. I had bought a bottle of what I was told was 75/25% Argon/Co2 off of Craigslist. It was a great price for a full bottle and the gentleman may have not know or the gas may have goofed. Anyways I exchanged the bottle and my welds are laying out like they should but, I'm basically re-learning after so many years. Thanks again
Great video Bob, Nice to know I am not alone in the belief of cleaning the metal. Actually worked with people who never believed in cleaning. Even for a 7018 weld. I think of it as taking pride in your work if you take time to clean it.
Thanks Bob! A rookie here that does have trouble seeing where I'm at from time to time. That tip on using soapstone at the toe of the weld is very helpful. Your demo showed the line easily.
Hi Bob, Just about to embark on my first welding course at the age of 76.Really enjoying your tuition. wish you were a bit nearer my neck of the woods.Scotland UK
Thank you Sir. I am a mech eng student trying to learn welding and stuff about welding. I am looking forward for the video you mentioned about cleaning stuff. Thank you again :)
Your doing it right. When you get the bubble going i heard side to side or back and forth. If im not making a thin bead I'll swirll my bubble on my path. 5:40
I'm no student. I'm just checking out videos out of personal curiosity just watching your videos I feel I could at least make the attempt to learn on my own. After a little text book reading of course.
Really enjoy vids, learn so much, watch this vid over and over. I got one straight bead out of ten and it looked good. Your relaxed teaching style is great. Many thanks, keep up the good work.
Awesome vid I’m Learning to weld properly 15 years ago I use to weld but more just repairing temporary until a professional could weld now I’m on a different farm and we send stuff away to get fixed and it’s a few hundred $ for like a hours work so I’m going to take over as much as I fell I can
Alec Steele's latest video has the dulcet tones of Bob Moffat in the background as Alec continued to bog up a silver solder joint. You could make a response video showing how to do it right. It could get good hits.
Bob the video of the weld pool and seeing thru almost your eyes teaches us a lot. What cameras could we use to film our welds and replay them so we can learn from our own errors and successful welds. Would your camera guy be able to give us some direction?
We use some pretty expensive camera equipment, however, you can get very good images with nothing more than an iPhone. Go check out @rollingbombfab and @smfabweld on instagram. All they use is their iPhone.
Practice till you can`t get it wrong .. TOTAL life lesson with everything we do Bob .. After that .. we won`t go wrong as often ... Just John... AUST...
Question! 19:11 to 19:47. Behind your puddle was a dark spot following your bead! Whats that? I know it was happening in your other passes but, it seemed more pronounced going uphill.
Thanks for the video. I like the little sway you do. I have notice everyone seems to weld how it’s comfortable for them. I seen a e shape weld, circle type shape as well.
Seen decent welds others have done that they said they didn't do any prep first, but whether they did or not, I can never get MIG to weld worth a crap unless the metal has been cleaned down to the white and shiny first.
John Ratko I read it depends on the type of wire you're using. ER70-6s I could be wrong on the name but I'm close. That's the wire we use in my welding course. It can run on dirty or clean metal.
bob can yoy make a video explaining how we read the suggested settings on the door of the welder?that most welders have....i cant understand it so it takes me a lot to set up the welder....i would prefer to read the suggested settings to know approximately and then make them better for me,,thank you.
New subscriber here. Just wanted to say thanks for the tips. I'm looking to start a new career and wanted to do a little research on the topic before hand.
Hi, I am brand new at welding, and even the beads that you don't like look perfect to me!!! It seems that most people "push", and you seem to "pull"; is this correct, and does it make a difference? Also, one of my biggest problems is that I can't see to keep a straight line. Where are you looking when you weld? Thank you, and your videos are great, and appreciated!!!
Hi I’m Freddy. I’m starting a 1 inch plate horizontal mig welding test tomorrow. Can you help me with some advice on what is most important to pass this test?
Can you do a series of videos where you teach beginners like me, on all the different types of welds eg. 1g, lap weld, fillet weld vertical up and down ext. But with all the types of welding, MIG, TIG, stick and gas welding. And all of this on mild steel. Please!! Ive gone through most of the videos and its not easy to spot those videos and I can't find all im looking for. Thank you
Hey, do you know where here in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Where you can go and touch up on your Welding, this will help out a lot. Thanks for the lesson please keep it going thank you!
Thank you for this upload! Quick feedback: The volume of your welding noise is high when watching this with headphones. Remember that impulse sounds (like the sparking sound of a MIG) are amplified in headphones.m
I agree material needs to be clean but in the field and in many shops time is of the essence and one is not going to be able to clean material down to a shine. You just have to learn to work with what’s in front of you. My thoughts
Thank you. As you weld about how far is your tip from the pool? Or put another way how long is the wire. I read you clip the wire at a 1/4 inch, but that certainly doesn’t seem to be the length of wire as you weld. So when you start the weld are you pushing the trigger while holding the tip steady waiting for the wire to lengthen and start arching?
It was interesting to see how settings won't change between flat position, downhill and uphill. All that mattered was angle of travel, gun tip movement and travel speed 😱
Bob; Another good video. I enjoy the tips and tricks that you provide. I'm a weekend/garage warrior getting back into MIG welding after many years away from it. I just bought a Hobart 140, 14" cold saw, and all the many accessories that go along with setting-up again. I was hoping that you could suggest a book for us anal people that like that type of resource. I used to have a very nice reference book, until I loaned it out. Your assistance would be appreciated.
I love the videos. Watch all the time. You did a video on welding stainless with flux core. Can you weld unlike stainless to each other using the wire you used? Stainless to unfinished steel?

Can't weld rust.

You're a great teacher Bob, another awesome video.
Mr. Bob is a metal surgeon. Great videos sir.
"you practice till you get good ... and THEN ... you start practicing. That's a quote that can be applied to anything.
“Practice doesn’t make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect”. Is the quote my instructor had on his wall
Sweet arc shots so easy to see the puddle and the weld bead trailing behind being laid down. Really really nice.
Great video Bob, Nice to know I am not alone in the belief of cleaning the metal. Actually worked with people who never believed in cleaning. Even for a 7018 weld. I think of it as taking pride in your work if you take time to clean it.

I really appreciate your tutorials; I too am a south paw, so I am able to see how you are holding and running!! Thank you!
Thanks Bob, I picked up a couple of points and ideas I think will help this old man that can hardly see any more.
I'm not a welder, but I did a bit of welding to help myself on the job. I can tell you, this is awesome stuff here.
Wow!!! When you welded between the lines you made you welded perfectly straight!!! I am a beginner so you know where I'm coming from.
Hi Bob, Just about to embark on my first welding course at the age of 76.Really enjoying your tuition. wish you were a bit nearer my neck of the woods.Scotland UK
Great video for us beginners!!! You kept it authentic and real world. Thanks for sharing your experience and skills!
Wonderful video!! I weld just like you in my welding class. Zig Zags on out positions welds. And whip and pause for flat positions
Thank you Sir. I am a mech eng student trying to learn welding and stuff about welding. I am looking forward for the video you mentioned about cleaning stuff. Thank you again :)
Baran Arslan iu
Thank you. As a beginner I really enjoy your videos
Your doing it right. When you get the bubble going i heard side to side or back and forth. If im not making a thin bead I'll swirll my bubble on my path. 5:40
Dont pop a bubble trying this you gota let the bubble keep up but not dip the wire in the full bubble on the comeback.
Does anyone else feel the instinct to glance away or put your hood down when hes about to start a bead lol.
Nope, cause I know I'm watching a video.
Look away yes
No, because I’m a newb. I can’t even remember to switch from grind to weld yet...
“He starts the weld” me “head bob”
No
Nice clean nozzle too!helps alot
Great tip on the soap stone!! Hopefully my beads will straighten out
I'm no student. I'm just checking out videos out of personal curiosity just watching your videos I feel I could at least make the attempt to learn on my own. After a little text book reading of course.
Id love a video on how you all clean material.
Easy wire wheel or grinder.
Really enjoy vids, learn so much, watch this vid over and over.
I got one straight bead out of ten and it looked good. Your relaxed teaching style is great.
Many thanks, keep up the good work.
I did a "T" joint with MIG applying multiple beads came out perfect.
Awesome vid I’m Learning to weld properly 15 years ago I use to weld but more just repairing temporary until a professional could weld now I’m on a different farm and we send stuff away to get fixed and it’s a few hundred $ for like a hours work so I’m going to take over as much as I fell I can
I learn something every time I tune in, now get to practicing jim
Great video, Bob. Thank you and Camera Guy!
Alec Steele's latest video has the dulcet tones of Bob Moffat in the background as Alec continued to bog up a silver solder joint.
You could make a response video showing how to do it right.
It could get good hits.
I applaud your wisdom. Thanks
Thanks Bob, you make it human to make mistakes while giving your best to improve, practice, practice, practice…. Only way to get better, thanks bud….
Great video, starts off right - Stella Artois beer! Well, now we can get down to learning welding.
A welding instructor used to say "If I can see it, I can weld it."
you are the real deal man... thanks for keepin it real
Thanks Bob you make it look easy
I’ve never welded anything. But after your video I’ve practiced the motions with a pencil. And it all makes perfect sense, thanks
you are very good, my father must have taught you, he was the best welder that ever came out of Ohio
Glad I stumbled across your channel. Great MIG welding video for beginners. Thank you!!
"practice till you get good, then practice till you cant get it wrong!" wiser men have not said it better!
Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge.
Working for Global marine and Brown and Root international both out of my home town in Houston, Texas We worked on pipe laying boats in the Ocean
As another left handed person it sure is nice to see it with a left hand swoop.... I used to watch Bob Ross videos in a mirror next to the TV
Great arc shots.
“Ugh... god that looks good.” 🤣🤣🤣
Bob the video of the weld pool and seeing thru almost your eyes teaches us a lot. What cameras could we use to film our welds and replay them so we can learn from our own errors and successful welds. Would your camera guy be able to give us some direction?
mark leder There are a variety of cameras. Some are expensive. Camera guy can advise you.
We use some pretty expensive camera equipment, however, you can get very good images with nothing more than an iPhone. Go check out @rollingbombfab and @smfabweld on instagram. All they use is their iPhone.
Your a great teacher Bob, keep up the great work and videos.
Thankyou for your Instructional Videos . . . Chris . . . Norwich England
Practice till you can`t get it wrong .. TOTAL life lesson with everything we do Bob .. After that .. we won`t go wrong as often ... Just John... AUST...
Bob thanks for your videos it has helped me quite a lot.
Boy I remember when we was welding in Tonkawa Oklahoma at
E & M welding making parts for John Deere company what Year was that Bobby oh my gosh
Question! 19:11 to 19:47. Behind your puddle was a dark spot following your bead! Whats that? I know it was happening in your other passes but, it seemed more pronounced going uphill.
Never mind, I just watched the rest of the video!
Thanks for the video. I like the little sway you do. I have notice everyone seems to weld how it’s comfortable for them. I seen a e shape weld, circle type shape as well.
Any hints on welding rebar, mostly for yard art use
Bob you rock!
I'm in high school and my instructor told me to do little "e's" for my movement. Works just about as good for me.
Riley Rogers I was taught to go foward, then going back a little and making a 'C' then forward a little more, then another 'C'.
I learn some things very in important in this video just keep on good jobs
Thanks, I can only dream of welding like that.
Using Flux core or gas
Thanks, Bob, this was a very helpful video...
Great information. I feel like my beads are too fat and a little tubular looking. What direction should I look first?
Dirty vs clean example was most helpful.
Excellent video thank you
Picked up a Lincoln weld pak 100 with cart and C25 bottle for $100
Such a helpful video - thanks for offering such a great service to us newbies here on RUclips!
Better than anything I could do
Is there a way to keep the lenses clean after they get toasty?? Or should i replace them like i have before?
Awesome lessons. Very good channel
I will be' watching this every day till I be come good
bob can yoy make a video explaining how we read the suggested settings on the door of the welder?that most welders have....i cant understand it so it takes me a lot to set up the welder....i would prefer to read the suggested settings to know approximately and then make them better for me,,thank you.
Beautiful bead, looks like tig so perfect.
New subscriber here. Just wanted to say thanks for the tips. I'm looking to start a new career and wanted to do a little research on the topic before hand.
Welding is a great career. Be sure to check out some of the material that AWS.org has available as well.

I hope you're doing well Bob!
You nailed it nicely Bob at last! What is the white pen you used? John from Oz
Hey, do you know where here in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Where you can go and touch up on your Welding, this will help out a lot. Thanks for the lesson please keep it going thank you!
Please do one with mig 3f with 035 wire. Would appreciate it.
Wow, really nice training video!
I’ve never actually looked at my beads and knew how good they were till I was watching this
Hey was wondering do you use the c’s technique
A video o cleaning would be great as you suggested.
What is the current limit for WIG say with 0.8mm welding wire? What‘s the upper limit?
Thank you for this upload!
Quick feedback:
The volume of your welding noise is high when watching this with headphones.

noticed you weld downhill for vert. any reason why or just personal prefrence

I was wondering why you pushing it instead of pulling it which also makes it easier for you to see while you are doing it.
So the welder ejects metal while melting the piece to be adhered to... thus creating a metal pool that is the bead?
Ótima regulagem!!

Jefferson's Welding Encyclopedia - AWS is a good one for general knowledge stuff and technical terms.
nice weld
where do you get those cool gloves?
I love the videos. Watch all the time. You did a video on welding stainless with flux core. Can you weld unlike stainless to each other using the wire you used? Stainless to unfinished steel?
