  • A man takes his daughter out for her birthday.
BUD is used with permission from Zach Woods. Learn more at imdb.com/name/....
A father is taking his daughter Maddie out for her birthday, enjoying dinner at a local restaurant. They're enjoying their time together and playing a sweet game of "rose, thorn, bud" when their celebration is interrupted by a woman taking their photo of the pair on their phone.
But that's not the only way their dinner is disrupted. As much as her father wants to ignore the interruptions, they keep escalating, hinting at a larger controversy embroiling him. And as try as he might, the father can't shield his young daughter from what's he done, or the fallout that's emerged from it.
Directed by SILICON VALLEY and THE OFFICE star Zach Woods from a script co-written with Brandon Gardner, this thoughtful short dramedy is a portrait of a family at a moment of a hidden crisis coming out into the open. Weaving together familial sweetness with almost satirical absurdity, it balances dark comedy with moments of quiet devastation, achieving an improbable grace and resonance.
Visually and emotionally, there's a fundamental warmth in the portrayal of the father-daughter relationship, shot with seemingly cozy intimacy and economy. But there's also a dark somberness in the cinematography that hints at a darker, more grown-up narrative current, one that seeps into what should be a carefree, happy moment in a young girl's life.
Actor Michael Pena (from NARCOS: MEXICO and the ANT-MAN movies) plays the father with genuine love and affection, but young performer Everly Carganilla (recently from Netflix's YES DAY) is the heart of the film, playing Maddie with innate intelligence and a winning openness. The storytelling limits the narrative to her point-of-view, and she slowly discovers her father possesses more dimensions than she's aware of at the same time as the audience does. The dialogue carefully lays its trail of information, escalating knowledge and intensity as the stakes for the parent-child pair increase and Maddie begins to realize the enormity of the situation around her.
The climax of BUD explodes into a confusing, heated swirl of chaos and emotional violence, and the sensitive, perceptive camerawork and editing devolve into a flurry of fractured tension. Father and daughter find themselves in a torrent of outrage, captured right down to the keen, eager onlookers capturing it all on their phones and a seemingly well-meaning grown-up whose intervention only adds to the young girl's confusion and fear. Within the visual and emotional turmoil, the scene remains anchored in the perspectives of the young children caught in the middle of it all. As the adults around them scream and shout in both defensiveness and self-righteousness, they've lost all awareness of the kids watching them -- the very children who are learning from their words and actions.
The final scene of BUD is, by contrast, quiet and focused. But it's not at all peaceful, with a little girl who can't quite make sense of it all, but who knows that something is troubling enough to roil her emotions and her sense of safety and security. She -- and the audience -- never quite learns what her father has specifically done. But we know some fundamental innocence is lost, made all the more heartbreaking for the quiet subtlety of its passing amid the tumult.

    So here's my approach:
I don't think it matters what the father did or did not do. It's not about him nor that. They may be right by disliking or judging him, they may be wrong. But it doesn't give them the right to harass him, especially while he is with his daughter on her birthday. It shows how ignorant people can be. Thinking they have the right to harass them, take videos, come up to their table and finally verbally attack them. And it's not just him that they do it to, it's also his 7 year old daughter who is with him. All that while thinking they're in the absolute right. That shows us how ignorant and self-righteous people can be.
Coming to the father-daughter relationship, a woman accuses him of being a terrible father, that he doesn't deserve to raise a child. But listening to their father-daughter conversation earlier, it becomes pretty clear that they love each other. Mentioning that the daughter likes pranking her father, shows that she's comfortable around him. If the woman knew this, would she still have said that?
Coming to the big-guitar-guy, i think the father said he is dead only because he thaught that he either wouldn't have showed up and she would be dissapointed or he would have showed up and the attention would be drown to them, potentielly ending up like it eventually ended up anyway.
The people at the restaurant represent the self-righteous and ignorant behaviour of people. They put all their attention on the dad not thinking that their behaviour affects everyone around them. You can see that in the brief moment when the two children look at each other, not knowing what's going on.
In opposite to that is the big guitar guy. I think him coming at the end is like saying to the girl and also to us, that there are also mindful people out there. We don't know what he thinks about the man as it is complety irrelevant to the message. He could be judging him as well, it doesnt matter, its his behaviour that matters. He is seeing the girl and putting his attention to her, notice how he doesnt even once look at the dad?
What i really like about this approach is, that at the end when the girl says to the guitar guy "My dad said you were dead" he answers with "Not yet" showing to not just both of them, but also to us, that people like him also exist, giving us the message and opportunity to reflect on our own behaviour.

Edit: Actually i'm glad i didn't read the description first, otherwise i wouldn't have seen it like i did. But that is kind of the beauty of a short storie isn't it? There is so much that you could take away from it, even things the writers didn't intend on telling, so that in the end there is only one short movie, but so many stories to it.

His latest, “Bud,” stars Peña as a father who takes his daughter out to dinner for her 7th birthday and is quickly ambushed by angry diners offended by something he did off-camera.
“When I see public shaming, automatically my mind starts to do sort of moral algebra,” Woods told the Daily News. “‘OK, what did they do? Does that warrant this? Is this not a sufficient reaction? Should there be less?’ I get sucked into the equation of what someone deserves or doesn’t deserve.”
“Part of why I wanted to tell this story is I thought it would be interesting to see one of those experiences from the perspective of someone who doesn’t even have the information to engage with the ideological ramifications, who can’t make a moral judgment, who’s just having an experience of seeing a loved one caught in the jaws of public outrage,” he said.

All people have to do is pick the child of a public figure, imagine Chelsea clinton at 10 years old or Michael Jackson's kids growing up. The point of view was evident by the camera angle, mainly at the little girls level. Ironically, most of the comments were about confusion, fear and some anger, which is what the creators where trying to evoke as what we were to empathize with children in these situations.

I watched this video twice just to make sure I could absorb the details, and read the comments to see what people gained from this.
I think a narrative like this is thought provoking precisely because in trying to discern what is happening we project our own sensibilities onto it, thereby giving it a meaning far beyond what was originally intended.
Now, what I think the movie is about
    - The father and daughter are having a dinner, by themselves, after an ordeal. Since they both mentioned the mother I think the ordeal had something to do with her. Perhaps the father was responsible for her demise somehow - but got acquitted, or got his daughter in custody by doing something unforgivable because of which mother is now not here (the last month being chaotic, finally getting to have a quiet dinner with his daughter, indicate something major happened, he couldn't be with his daughter, and mom isn't here but her absence seems recent and related)
    - the community is still riled up from the verdict, his presence makes them feel angry, especially a mother with a small child
    - the lady at the fountain is the only one the little girl tells about her birthday (the father says the guitar guy is dead because he didn't want to draw more attention to themselves with a birthday song, the staff at the establishment themselves are feeling awkward)
    - after the commotion, the father and daughter flee, I think the lady at the fountain tells guitar guy that its the girls birthday
    - when she says my father said you were dead, and he replies not yet, I saw it as a metaphor of people'ss compassion and empathy being dead, to which he fittingly replies, not yet.
I rest my case. Let m know if this makes sense ?

They are so mad that they are blinded for the situation and behave very badly in a context that has nothing to do with the reason why they are mad. This was such a wonderful short & really got to me & made me tear up while watching on break at work. Seeing the little girl & how she is heartbroken but doesn’t understand what’s going on. It amazes me how people can be so intertwined with their anger that they don’t stop & think about who’s around or who they may really be hurting. Sadly I had a similar situation happen but I had just pulled into my drive with my daughter in the car, & thank God she was asleep. Because I had my husband aunt pull in behind me, & start yelling at me about how my daughter would be better off is I was dead, & just on & on. And this all started because I asked her very nicely if she could please not overstep into our life. She would go to my daughters school to find out her school stuff n would purchase the stuff for my daughter before I could. She bought my daughter her first day of school outfit. I mean her actual first day ever of school. She would butt in to all kinds of things. I told her I was thankful but it did bother me some when it felt like she was trying to push me out. There’s so much more to this, like how my husbands mom was pushed outta of the pic to be raised by his grandparents and this aunt.
Anyhow, it was a horrible situation & I’m so grateful my daughter was asleep. But the aunt yelling at me didn’t know she was. So here she was cursing me up and down about things & how she’d be a better mom while my daughter is just a few feet away. She didn’t care how her words would affect my daughter because she was so engulfed in her own anger. So people letting the anger get the best of them while their children watch & learn from thus behavior. It’s taking away that child’s wonder & fulfilling them instead with fear. It just really hurt my heart for that little girl. She shouldn’t have to suffer for her fathers sins.

Throughout the film I wanted to know what transgression did he actually commit. Why was he so hated? At the end it appeared obvious that it was immaterial. It wasn't about what he did. Rather how he acted in spite of it all. Perhaps if the writer spelled it out to us and let us know what he did, our ability to focus on the actual theme could have been compromised. Great acting and excellent writing and direction.

Perhaps -- but I think creating that kind of dissonance is also an art. It must also plague the man's daughter to know why all of these things are happening, and we are watching this almost from her perspective. We want the answer, we feel owed the answer, and we are often spoiled by media that gives us all of the answers. But this isn't about the answer, it's about the girl and how she sees things. Remember how strange and fearful the adult world felt to us when we were young? By depriving us of an explanation, we share that disjointed dissonance with the characters until we meet one man who is more concerned with granting her wish than ignoring her to chastize her father.

Whenever I see on TV or in the movies, a bond between a father and his daughter, I always wonder what that would have felt like. My dad was never like that, he was a father who only knew how to give verbal abuse mentally, emotionally and physically. He was plain and simple, a %$&$ing jerk. He passed away when I was about 14yrs old and I know if he was still around, that most likely I would not be. The ending was a perfect touch, with the guitar player coming out to find the little girl and sing Happy Birthday to her. Great job!!!!

Beautiful film. I imagine it holds a different meaning for every viewer. To me, it's a reminder that we're all complex characters in our own story. Through the eyes of a child, we may be only a loving, doting father. Through the eyes of our critics, we may be only a villain, undeserving of empathy. In our own minds, we know the truth. We are complicated, flawed and multi-faceted. Hyper-focusing on our good traits is naive. Hyper-focusing on the bad is a recipe for depression or worse. We can choose the good over the bad, but we have to be realistic and honest about all the facets of who we are and the choices we've made. From the outside looking in, the lesson is one of empathy and restraint. People in real life are not like fictional characters. And treating them as such reveals more of the ugliness within us than it does the ugliness within them. The guy on your side of the political aisle is not a saint. The one on the other is not a monster.

This is so powerful. The circumstance remains unknown, but it has nothing to do with the past. It's about the girl and her perspective of the situation. Many people don't realize how their behavior effects the children around them. The last thing a kid needs is to recieve the message that they have bad parents because they are the ones they should feel comfortable turning to for moral support. The father may not have been a good man, but he's a good dad and its obvious that he wants to do better and perhapse lead his daughter down a better path than his own. The woman at the fountain and the man at the end were the only people besides her dad that considered the daughter's feelings, whether they respected the dad or not.

Okay,. After watching the film twice and reading the comments, I have some thoughts. This is a memory that the girl is working through in a therapy session. The woman at the wishing well is the therapist. Everyone in the restaurant is dead because of her father, including her mother. He survived and raised her. She is being guided through the memory in a way that makes sense to the little girl in her-her age when the accident happened. It happened on her birthday, the day she turned seven. The man with the guitar died later than the rest. I'm guessing it was some kind of accident, which is why the man said get home safe and the dad told the bellhop they were in a hurry. I think he was in a hurry and did not pay attention and cause some kind of horrific accident.

For those who don’t understand this film its the girls last memory with her father for her birthday as her father is deceased his cup is mostly full and he never takes a drink or a bite the girl has a navy suit on because we’re in her memory but in reality she’s older. When the dad tells his buds he says 2 of them the first one he says he gets to finally have a quiet dinner, now tht the guitar guy is dead(Which I believe was him) On the second bud he says he looks forward to tomorrow because he gets to see his daughter, The people are interrupting because she is sitting by herself in a full table which is why they tell her to listen to their story but she ignores. When she steps outside the Guitar guy comes out the dad doesn’t say a word the girl tears up because her dad used to sing it to her, she only went to hear the song. After the song the guitar guy tells her “you go home safe now” as she is alone

He, the guitar, is only speaking to her implying that her dad at the beginning is Not existing in this Scene. The only use He has is to Show that she ist a little Girl with the height comparison of their shoulders as you cannot See the ground in the Perspective the camera has on the Girl.
She is wearing a navy Suit for two reasons: 1. It is clothes for grown Ups, implying she is in fact grown Up. 2. Navies travel the ocean and Bring people from one place to another. May it be time, memories.

I think here are some details to decipher this movie: Do people usually dress up as Navy officers on their birthday? What's the purpose of the woman at the fountain, I mean, she could just have been left out, wouldn't have changed the plot at all, would it? Do 7 year olds typically play rose-thorn-bud, which is a typical therapy thing? Why is the child book Madeline not only mentioned twice but also quoted by the woman at the fountain? What is this book all about and why that book an no other book? He mentions the woman at the other table might know him from the news, so how do you get into the news? He also mentions that people are probably just mad at him, so why would people be mad at someone being shown in the news? His thorn is that it hasn't been a great month, probably referring to the fact that this is not the first time people reacted this month. The woman arguing with him says "You don't deserve to be here and make all these people think the way you hurt other people or how they've been hurt"; she also says "You don't deserve to raise a daughter". Why is that one woman not just introducing herself but also her son, I mean, how's her son important, unless the reason everybody is mad would affect her son as well? What's up withe the hat? The hat was never mentioned before and was only briefly shown, why is it even mentioned in the end as a detail? Why does the guitar dude replies "Not yet man"? Oh and why isn't mommy with them and would she really have to be dead, since no clue is given for that to be the case and the girl is rather disappointed than terribly sad it seems.

I think the movie is simpler than the comment section is making it out to be. I feel like maybe the father did something that the public didn't like and he was getting canceled and like in reality nobody cared about who canceled culture effects which in this scenario was the little girl, his daughter.

I'd be interested in the dads deal.. he seemingly did something so bad (?) the town are against him but not bad enough that he has to be kept away from his daughter or serve jail time (that we know of)
I felt bad for the daughter, the adults were behaving terribly .. It made me think, I am ever this same way, in my heart? Would I act out this way, as they did? I hope not.. with the judgement we pass on others it will be returned, pressed down and dealt back 7 times..

    • @ufodeath
      @ufodeath 2 года назад +3

"he obviously did something so bad the town are against him"
Here's the thing, we don't know that. in fact, it's probably that very same assumption that led to a build up of a mob. Here's a perfectly viable alternative explanation to how the Dad was treated so terribly: The first lady treated him horribly from a distance, even as her friend tried to get her to stop. While the camera was not focused on the lady, she likely spread rumors against he Dad, that other people bought at face value, and as it became increasingly obvious that a bunch of people were furious at the dad based on a completely baseless rumor, other people joined in to bandwagon in on it... quite literally resulting in a mob anger out of a completely made up rumor.

I see it as a testiment to the human ego, and the demented psychotic obsession of making sure everyone else knows what we think and what we have to say and think about them. They were in a frenzy to tell them what they thought of him. They did not care about the kids or who they may hurt. This guy had to hear what they had to say because they are all that goddamn important. A testiment to the fact that most of us are utterly obsessed with ourselves and have an almost immeasurable sense of self importance.

Absolutely incredible..no other words to describe..from the plot, to the acting.. I'm convinced this had something to do with the mother either missing without a trace or getting killed in an accident or the father taking the custody of the little girl because the mother has mental issues or even drug abuse..We will never know and as hard as it's been on the girl, the bond she has with her dad is simply unbreakable and strong enough to withstand any form of harassment from the outside world, and the judgment coming from others opinions (which we cant really change ) !
I've lived through a very similar situation, with my daughter..no matter what people say, she and I will never fall apart because of our unconditional love for one another and it's all that matters, especially, when you're a parent! What a great story..I'm tearing up 🥺👌

I feel like her hat was kind of symbolic of her childhood. Like, she was dressed in a costume as little kids like to, and then her hat got left behind, like it was a piece of her childhood. Because that little girl is always going to remember this moment, where people where so angry at her father and she is going to question why that is, and realise that maybe her father isn't the hero she thinks he is. And its clearly something, as the father mentioned being recognised from the news. She will find out eventually what it is that has happened. Also then, the guitar dude, bless him, comes out to sing happy birthday and the little girl cries maybe because she has realised this is the last time he will sing that song for her. It's not likely they will come back to the restaurant now, and she will probably forever associate the birthday song with the bad thing that has happened.

This is a terrific and thought provoking story that is portrayed wonderfully.
It made me think about how some people have done terrible things. Some people are so self-important that rules don't apply to them, and that their actions are justified by their own rage. Some people are determined to be an anchor of kindness in an often chaotic and violent world. I could go on moralizing about what people do and who they "are", but then I'm afraid I would miss out on what a beautiful story this is. I love the contrast between the anger and the calm, judgement and forgiveness, fear and courage, the joy and the misery.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this because I didn't read all 236 comments but I think this is a mix of her memories with her present. The angry people are in the past and here's why I think that: if those people were so angry some of them would have followed them out of the restaurant. The only one to follow was the Guitar Guy, not seen through the whole sequence and supposedly dead, with a Happy Birthday song. As someone else mentioned he only told the little girl to get home safe. Was dad killed on the way home making this her last memory of him? Just some thoughts. I love a mystery and there's plenty here. Good Job!!! Loved it!!!

I adored my dad beacuse i barely saw him and thought the whole world was against him. Then I grew up and at the age of 21 I can barely be in the same room as him as I witnessed what type of man he is. That's nothing to the video just stories with father's and daughters really get me especially how she's witnessed unacceptable behaviour

So it was the little girls birthday. She was celebrating it with her father who is in the Navy and accidently got people killed one way or another, the people in the restaurant were the loved ones of those who had fallen. Her father was one of the people that survived the incident.
She was unable to have a dinner with her father and have that be peaceful because the people of the loved ones who have died are harassing him because of 'what he did'. As the guy was singing her the song she was sad and crying because everyone blamed and hated her father for the incident. Not to mention that the day wasn't about her and her birthday because of this news, everyone didn't care and forgot about it and her. When she said "my dad said you were dead", it means her father told her what happened. He said "not yet man" showing that it is the memory of people that keep them alive, even if you didn't know them personally.
Or I'm completely wrong? I didn't pay a lot of attention when watching it, and only watched it once.

    MOTHER AND SON
What were the scriptwriters thinking when they wrote the following lines? In what way is the mother and her son relevant to the story line?
[6:49 -- 6:56] Amidst the chaos, one woman confronts the Dad and says: "Excuse me. My name is Carol Muldowney. This is my son. I just need to tell you something. We weren't just sleeping."

Possible that the daughter was in father's custody (relating to what he said that his bud is that he will wake up tomorrow knowing that she's there); and the reason why his thorn is about not having a good month possibly because of husband-wife problem prior to their dinner (they were separated and the daughter is now in father's custody).
It is also possible that majority of people in the resto knew about what happened but their symphathy is on the mother (not realising that the father-daughter relationship are actually in good shape). They were always coming to that resto, maybe it's just near to their home or a village-type diner, knowing that the father knew the waitress' name and the daughter is expecting the man with the guitar.
Just putting into words what's in my mind. A very good short movie tho. 👋

It was a good representation of the uncertainty for a kid surrounding adult anger and tragedies.

In addition to the existing comments, my take is: children should *not* be the casualties of war, nor collateral damage to what their parents did. And if you as a bystander feel the need to express your disgust towards the parent, do so when you're alone - not when the innocent child is around, for it affects them too.
