Remember that sp3 was installing and it does a temp copy to c: root and windows\servicepackfiles plus a system restore. installing sp3 should consume some hdd space. that's why there are slipstreamed cds with sp3.
I had the Inspiron E1405, which came out a year after the 6000, but looks very similar to the two in this video. I used it as a Hackintosh with Mac OS X Tiger installed on it. OS X only worked with one core however (:
I had one of those Dell laptops and I remember it giving me such a nightmare of a time. Especially the loud fan that would overheat and cause the laptop to turn off randomly and the CD drive that would randomly disappear.
12:56 You could of just installed unofficial SP4. They say, and i quote It can be applied to a live Windows XP system which has SP1, at the minimum, installed or it can be slipstreamed (integrated) in any Windows XP installation media.
3.1 doesn’t surprise me because it came out in 1992 and they usually give about 10 years of support. The others definitely especially since they weren’t in use AT ALL long before 2001. I think they should support windows for minimum 15 years now due to people using older systems longer due to longevity and future-proof specs getting better over time
I had an inspiron with this design that came with Vista, can't remember the model number but it had nearly the exact same design as these two, just the white part on the edge was silver. It's interesting how long they used the design for but I always thought it was cool.
I installed a hacked free Windows xp Professional SP3 Student Edition one of my laptops to see what it would do and they removed some of the features, but they added other features that made its size larger than the original xp SP3 Professional. It ran very well and I installed it from a flash drive. My laptop has low specifications and it installed in around 50 minutes. (It's an Inspiron 5150 that I've been running Lubuntu from a flash drive on) We're in the middle of switching internet providers so I had to download my laptop's drivers on my phone, copy them to a flash drive with another computer and install them on my laptop. The Student Edition even had SD card reader drivers that allowed me to use my USB card reader and I can't even get our Windows 10 laptop to read from a USB card reader. Its built in card reader has never worked since we bought the laptop.
I'd love to see how well Kubuntu 18.04 runs on these. P.s. Service Pack 3 is outdated as well, Service Pack 4 is where its at : www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/windows_xp_service_pack_4_unofficial.html This version includes every update released for XP along with some usual upgrades like RDP , XPS Viewer and BitlockerToGo.
The press any key thing was a good thing because sometimes when windows finishes the 1st part it loads again because is set to 1st boot instead if you don't press any key you can continue setup, there is a way to put this on windows 10 usb isos?
I remember installing Windows XP on my Dell Inspiron 2650 and it had all the drivers for it. I should never recommend installing unofficial versions of Windows. The installation was smooth as butter.
The OEM CD just has Windows on it, but Dell did package like 4 or 5 CDs with their computers back then. At least, with the Dimention 8400 they did which is where that disc came from. They had a separate disc with all of the drivers on it that you would have to manually reinstall if you formatted your hard drive.
you can still get on the internet with xp on the opera and i think internet explorer just if you go on youtube a bunch of videos are only in 360p because it doesn't support html5 video
Still watching, but did you notice yesterday that per the Windows properties screen, one of 'em was running at half the CPU speed of the other? Also: www.guimods.com/vienna-xp-windowblinds-theme/
I'm very curious about that DS game in the top right corner of the screen 🤔 what game could it be? Also, amazing video as always! Trying to watch em all :3
Hey, I have Windows XP service pack 3 for Dell. I own a Latitude e6510 I downgraded Windows 7 pro on back in the day. I am sure I could reimage it and send it somehow. At least then you have the image.
The "Drivers and Utilities" CD for most recent Dell models includes a utility to create a Dell Utility partition. This utility is mkup.bat, a DOS batch file in the \upc32\uptools folder on the CD. It will only run from DOS, not Windows. The "Drivers and Utilities" CD is bootable, but does not include the option on any of its menus. You must boot from the CD, exit to the DOS prompt, and run the mkup.bat script from the command line. Run the utility with the command: "x:\upc32\uptools\mkup XXXX", where x: is the drive letter assigned to the CD drive and XXXX is the appropriate version number of the Dell Diagnostics utility for your system. Warning: This utility will destroy all existing data on the hard disk, including the Windows partition! This utility should only be used on a new hard disk, or a hard disk that you are willing to wipe and start over with a completely new installation. Note this utility requires a Diagnostics version number, and it will look for that version in the \diags folder on the CD.
They run 64Bit 7 and 10 fine. I was actually able to run 11 on mine and it ran totally fine and was fully usable speed wise. 7/8.1 is the optimal OS for these machines though.
Hey Michael! Im a big fan of your videos and your community and I want to ask you for a r/techsupport question. 2 Days ago my hard-drive broke after I installed Windows 7 on it (clean install on USB) Then i got a new SSD and i decided to upgrade my pc. I installed the same Windows 7 from the same USB and after 2 days, the SSD broke again. By broke I mean, when I boot the PC with the SSD In it the bios hangs up after detecting the ssd, nothing else is plugged in, No DVD drives, no usb drives nothing, not even a keyboard. I tried removing the SSD and there the pc boots up! I would be very, very happy if you could help me resolve the issue :) Bye!
Oh no! You destroyed the media direct partition! That was Dells Hallmark for XP computers going back to the mid to thousands. That software is a nightmare to try to reinstall. They did so much crazy stuff to the hard drives while putting those together at the factory to install that. I have never been able to successfully reinstall dell media direct on any media direct equipped PC that I have rebuilt and reformatted.

can you take a look at windows shorthorn ?
7:48 How come on the boot screen they removed the "professional" and "home edition" front from later service pack boot screens?
IDK. Probably to clear the original RTM stuff or whatever it is.
I had one of those Dell laptops and I remember it giving me such a nightmare of a time. Especially the loud fan that would overheat and cause the laptop to turn off randomly and the CD drive that would randomly disappear.

It amazes me that Windows 1.X, 2.X, 3.X were actually officially supported by MS up until 2001, when XP came out
And now they don't even bother supporting 8.1 hahaha 😂

Ah yes, the video we all been waiting for.
I'm your subscriber, only because it is all about Windows. And most importantly Windows XP. Love you man (you as an elder brother) for this content!
Michael, ever consider starting a Discord server to talk about these? -I'm really psyched that you've reformatted these. Dell puts out great laptops.
Fuck Discord.

Win 7 will work just fine on these machines! I've tried. :)
Those Dell inspirons looks so cool to be honest
Literally needed this video
Is the one on the right blowing its exhaust right onto the side of the left?
Does linux work here?
Yeah!

Fun fact: Dell reused this chassis for the Precision M90 and M6300, only there's a dock port on the Precision line.
Laptop on the right has an older bios revision than the one on the left!
Yep! That’s another update I’ll have to get
Is the OEM CD just the activated Windows or with the specific laptop that you said it came with and included drivers on the disk?

@CSP's Random huh the chrome on my machine locks up my system. i wonder if it's an extension that's causing it.
@CSP's Random i have extensions but i don't know how to go about disabling them or some of them with out freezing the computer
@CSP's Random i'll give it a shot later today and see if i can get it to work again

I find windows 7 or 8.1 is the optimal OS for the Inspiron e1505. They can run up to windows 11 just fine though.
I’m years and years late but the laptop on the right at least is in want of a BIOS update, it has A14 while the left has A17.
We have one of these with Vista on it and we are locked out of it due to there only being one user, and no guest.

I saw this while installing sp4 in a VM!
Windows 2000 Service Pack 4? I don't think XP had a Service Pack 4.
@@DoctorKosher1978
Is a fuckin user made shit
Sorry, I mean the unofficial one.
Lefteris the builder Ah, I've heard about it, but never used it.
user I know that Windows XP Service Pack 4 was unofficial.
that DS cardridge give me nostalgia.
My dad had the dell inspiration 6400 but sadly i cant use it anymore because it's destroyed
Try installing all the new Windows versions

bro can i have XP cd installer 🙏
Had one of these machines back in the day. They were super fast with XP (sucked with Vista), but they were super bulky.
I have an inspiron 9400 (basically the same laptop, but the 17" variant... And it runs Windows 10 pretty well.
I have the Inspiron 6400, equivalent to the E1505. With the right upgrades, these machines run Windows 7 32-bit very fast.
They run 64Bit 7 and 10 fine. I was actually able to run 11 on mine and it ran totally fine and was fully usable speed wise. 7/8.1 is the optimal OS for these machines though.
please try vista on them
Windows 7 is better
Make a IBM Thinkpad factory restoration video :)
If you upgrade the RAM to 2gb 7 or 10 will run quite nicely on those Core 2 duo machines. Also DDR2 ram is quite cheap now.
It can be upgraded to 4GB
Those laptops will boot with 4GB, but they’ll only see 3GB of ram
I'm watching this on windows XP and guess what it is service pack 3
Install win7 one one of them

I remember having one of these years ago. I think it had about 750 mb of RAM which was plenty for XP
13:50 lol thanks autofocus
Arch Linux or PuppyLinux would run quite nice on these PCs.
Windows XP SP1 is terrible. I found this site where they were saying "Windows XP, just say no" 😆
I have an inspiron myself.

For some reason, I wish my old laptop is compatible with IDE hard drives so I can install Windows XP lol
Avery Baker, service pack 3, right?
I rather have the sp2 because it’s 64-bit and it’s the meme version of Windows xp
