I never knew CSX freight trains go that fast. They sure have alot of faith in those tracks. Most of the ones I see in my neck of the woods sway, and the tracks sag as the freight car passes over them. I stay a car (auto) 1/2 length from the signal arms just in case, ha ha.

This is FRA Class 5 track, good for 90 mph passenger and 70 mph freight (although passenger trains where this was shot are limited to 79 mph). The higher the track class, the higher the standards for track condition and geometry.

Class five is 80 mph for freight trains but they go to 70 mph and passengers train can go 90 mph but there no PTC install for most of the East Coast Virginia has PTC from Richmond to Ashland like 10 miles. so passenger in Georgia go 79 mph but really you don’t need PTC for 90 mph you need PTC for 110 mph

Ups high priority train. Always has more locomotives on than needed. This is called for if one breaks down on the trip. They usually drop it on a siding or haul it offline the rest of the trip. If this train is late, the penalties($) are very high for the tailroad.

ok this one is tough to calculate because the piggyback cars (trailer haulers) look smaller than the 53' container stackers. So overall I estimate the train as 18 stackers + 53 trailerbacks 40' each, plus 3 60' locomotives. All that adds up to 4275' going by in 46 seconds. That works out to be 63 mph. Usually when I calc these I get 50-58 mph. This is the first one over 60 I have seen. So maybe the intermodals can exceed 60mph after all. Ive heard they can go 70, but all the posts ive seen claiming 70 or 70+ never work out to more than 58 mph or so.

It's actually no faster than 49MPH for Freight without block signals. However, where this is, there is block signals on this line. So 70MPH is allowed here. It's Class 5 track,
