I am a brand new user of a T-8. I have used manual Japanese water stones for a long time, but I wanted to improve my productivity. Most of my sharpening work is culinary knives. I cannot thank you enough for the content in these videos. I read the booklet that came with the machine, but the additional information and rich context of the videos are educational and extremely helpful.
Great episode, I watched the one on flat blades recently and subsequently sharpened all my chisels and planer blades very successfully, now I have about a dozen scissors to sharpen, I feel confident having watched this episode that I shall be able to sharpen them all very nicely tomorrow.
Great work. I have many brand tools at my workshop but never experienced after sales support like tormek. These videos very educational and gives me peace of mind that there very clearly instructions that I can go back as reference.
I just bought a new Tomak T8. Went ahead and pulled the trigger on a rotating tray and a Japanese Waterstone. Looking forward to having very sharp knives and scissors and whatever else I decide I want to sharpen LOL. Tormek, Frontal Vertical Base would be great to have for honing on the leather wheel. Also sharpening other things using the front for large cleavers etc.
Hi, We have the US-430 for sharping large cleavers. Honing can both be done by free hand and with a support. Whatever you feel most comfortable with and you feel gives you the best result. Stay sharp!
I enjoyed the 2nd demonstration very much. I think that with questions each topic could of easily been an hour video. Personally I would have like to have various scissors and scissor like garden tools actually demonstrated as I am sure there are subtle differences in the process. Sometimes experts when they do a demonstration will find that what seems like second nature to them is a revelation to the attendee. I also think the axe portion warrants an hour actually showing us how to do all the various configurations. I am sure I can figure these things out when presented with a differently shaped tool but I would feel better if I had seen it done. One thing I found when I sharpened a number of scissors is that they cut poorly partially because the blades were contaminated with adhesive and tape that had accumulated over the years and that a through cleaning before sharpening went a long way. I also disassemble scissors when I can to clean them and apply a tiny drop of oil where they rub near the screw. Thanks

Can you demonstrate how to sharpen multi bladed folding pocket knives where the blades are not centered in the handle? Case XX Trapper knives have given me troubles to sharpen on a Tormek T8. I avoid sharpening them for the level of difficulty. Love the videos, keep them coming!

Hello I’m just getting into pen turning and my dad had a Tormek and all the jigs necessary... I’ve been trying to sharpen the gouges but I can’t seem to get a consistent edge, will you be doing turning tools soon? Are there any videos that demonstrate these, I haven’t found any. Also kein fixer Winkel wie bei einer Schnitzaxt mit scandi, sondern schön konvex zulaufend. Wie würde ich sowas an einer Tormek T7 machen? Gibt es da ein Jig, oder müsste man das freihand machen? Hej Scotty, depends what finish you what or speed up the process. When using the SP-650 Stonegrader you use the edge of the Stonegrader on the stones surface to get a more rough surface for more material removal and when you use the fine side with the surface on the surface of the sharpening stone you'll get a finer bevel surface that equals a 1000 grid. The stone has originally 220 grid. //Wolfgang
You probably could if you had some practice, but the stones in general, are a bit low for hair scissors in my opinion. As an alternative, I would just get some high-quality whetstones. I recommend Naniwa or Shapton as some good Japanese brand names to start off.

If you are not holing an edge is there a way to check the hardness? Some of the axes I get have been sharpend with a grinder and have been overheated. Is there a go no go method economically?
Hej Steven, I am not sure what you want to know? If the axe was overheated you might need to take away a little bit more steel to get the edge really sharp and even again. The choice of your grinding wheel can depend on the hardness of the steel. Most tools can be sharpened with our SG-250 Original Grind Stone. For harder stones do we recommend the SB-250 Blackstone Silicone or the Diamond Wheels. Hope that helps! Stay sharp!
I tied sharpening my gransfors carving axe but i cant get the bevel to be even with the edge. Do i need to do something special for these type of axes?
It's just training a analyse your movement, take it slow and easy. I try to find the center of the rotation and hold it steady in the jig. Sometimes you have to lift maybe the shaft too. This depends on the shape due the Axes are handmade and not every ax is exact the same.
Hi Aear, No unfortunately you can't change the place of the stone and the honing wheel. Stay sharp! If you mean lefthand scissors, you can take them apart, then you don´t have the problem to shift the wheels.

Hi, I am from Australia and our supply voltage is 240V 50Hz. These machines work perfectly with this supply. Make sure you buy a machine that does specify 220-240V and not a 120V motor.
Informative video. Thank you. I have a question after sharpening a few scissors on my T-4. Why do it get so messy when sharpening scissors? I get them sharp, but there is water all over the place when sharpening. Am I doing something wrong?
Hi Laskatore, It can get a bit messy sometime due to the form of the scissor and the sharpening angle. Try not putting to much pressure can make it a bit less messy sometimes. In using the gauge on the axe, you seem to be measuring the bevel which is NOT touching the wheel. Surely, having measured it thus, you need to reverse the axe blade so that you sharpen the bevel you have just measured? You can’t assume the bevels are the same..especially when sharpening for first time.
Hej David, as you said most axes aren't symetrical, not even the head of the axe. The axe jig gives you a better grip and control but due the fact of a not symetrial and even axe you'll never get a precise angel. The shape of the axe itself will guide the splitt in either direction not the bevels angels.
I have posted in a couple other of your videos about this way to measure bevel angle . I have eyed up the actual cutting edge bevel since I bought my Tormek in 2005 ( SuperGrind 2000 👍) . You set the angle at 20 degrees on the second bevel , then measured the actual cutting edge and said about 37 degrees ( minute 37 ) ??? 🤔🤔🤔 Which is the correct bevel to measure ?
Can I ask if you could attempt sharpening bonsai tools on the t8? I would be happy to provide the tools. I have a tormek t8 and many of the accessories and I believe this would be a great way to break into another industry which neglects sharpening.

Can you sharpen hairdressing scissors on the T8?
Hi Cliff, We don't recommend it since they are a complex tool to sharpen. Please see after 24.30 in the clip above were we discuss it more in detail.

My new axe jig binds on tool rest and doesn't slide. Jig and tool rest are new. Tried silicone lube, doesn't help.

So for scissors, unlike the chisels, you don’t need to sharpen the backs ?
We sharpen only the inside of scissors, yes. But you can hone the outside on the honing wheel to get rid of the bevel.
