- I spent last weekend at Jackson Celtic Festival in Jackson, MS and while I was there I figured I could carve out a few minutes to talk about low whistles, something that a lot of folks have been asking about over the years.
The festival was a blast - if you're in the area next year, definitely check it out. And I hope this little discussion on the larger whistles was of some use!
As an aside, I happened to turn 40 while I was there and I can't think of a better way to get older than with a bunch of friends playing tunes till the odd hours of the morning.

Whistles are made by Gary Humphrey: web.blomand.net/~ghumphrey/

Production quality went through the roof! That's the kind of thing that attracts subs. Something something, "if you build it"
Thanks a bunch, it's been fun doing more stuff like this!
I really love the Humphrey whistles, they are something special. Thanks for introducing us to that flute maker.
Your shirt in the beginning is SICK. Love it, and great playing as always.
Hahahah thanks, birthday present from a friend taking the piss - genuinely thought about rolling up to the festival wearing it but I just couldn't.
Great video, great shirt...
I constantly play my Goldie F man, my favourite key as well, after I was lucky enough to try McGoldrick’s I knew I had to get one 😂
Yeah it's such a great range - I don't know why but it's just so much fun to play.
Well, this is a new low.
Great video! Nice shirt ! 😁
hahahahah thanks!
❤️💕
God bless you for fasting during Lent. May your Easter joy be complete!
Cheers, same to you - and God bless the good people of McDonald's for the Fillet-O-Fish. I'd be lost without them this time of year.
I like the shirt 😂
Expertly edited!
Great stuff, thanks. Cillian O'Brien is still very much making his fab' whistles, and I was actually looking at one here in England on Friday last. He is making some really great tweaked high D whistles which are very popular over here. Try: Big Whistle Music.com.
Can a whistle with a tuning slide be tuned lower than its intended key? Such as could a Bb be tuned a half step lower and be made an A?
It depends on the whistle - but often, even if the bottom note can be dropped a half step, the rest of the instrument's intonation will be off.
@@whistletutorMeh. This is just a theory.
How do you mean that notes become chords? I always thought that an F# is an F# not major or minor until you add other ‘simultaneous’ notes.
Angus Robins sorry should have been more specific - not chords but keys (or scales.) So on a D whistle the Em scale starts on the second hole from the bottom - on the A whistle that same position would be B, thus the scale would be the Bm scale.
whistletutor Still not sure I get it,because as I see it the D whistle (or flute) has 2 #’s F & C whereas the Em scale has only 1 - F#. No matter where you start you’ll still get F# and C#. Can you explain please? I’m trying not to get hung up on scales or modes as these seem to relate more to jazz music and I’m trying to figure out more and more by ear as I was only taught to play from sheet music as a child, and traditional Irish/Scottish music seems to have a more ‘instinctive’ nature to it.
@@AngusRobins No problem - since Em is the relative minor of G, you'd basically be using G fingering but starting on E - thus you'd be playing C natural, not C#. Here's a video I did about 10 years ago (so the quality is dreadful) but it might explain more: ruclips.net/video/VsvoeAymhq8/видео.html
I'm catholic myself
