I am surprised that it was Ben who quit and had to get five extra wax strips. At first glance, the two sides of this challenge seem equally difficult, painful, and unbearable. But upon closer scrutiny, hot side had a distinct advantage. Hot water tends to cool down faster and more easily than cold water warms up. Even if water in Ben's tub stays quite hot, Ben can still make eating all those hot, spicy foods more bearable by rinsing his mouth with water after each course. Water will dilute spicy elements in hot foods, taking away burning taste. By contrast, rinsing his mouth with cold water will not make eating those cold foods more bearable for Derek. Effects of eating extremely cold foods, especially foods that are literally frozen, include brain freeze, numbness of lips, mouth, and teeth, and severe stomachache. None of these excruciating symptoms can be relieved by diluting elements that cause cold feeling inside mouth. Therefore, Derek should have quit first. Maybe Ben only quit because of the notoriety of the one chip challenge among RUclipsrs.
