Hey, nice vid. You missed out on the Grafton at the bottom of Midland Road, the huge Wetherspoons at the beginning of Midland Road, and a lovely array of bars and a pub just off the high street on St.Cuthburts Street too...
Hiya Jot, thanks for watching, you’re right I missed these places out by accident. On my next visit I will included them after lockdown. Stay safe ...., Andy
Nice video Andrew ,still this Bedford is too modern for me ,i would sill prefer Bedford of the 60's, if you had turned on the right at the traffic lights on the ST Peter square ,you could have mention that Bedford had the nicest Theatre the Granada, where the top 60's groups, played in there, including The Beatles,The Kinks, and so on. but sadly now is Lidl supermarket.,,well done Andrew.
In years to come when shops in the high street have disappeared, people will look back at this video and go “I remember that,” or “I’d forgotten about that place.”
Colin Mumford hiya, what you say is so true. I can even remember the cinema that used to be down the embankment if I remember right and then converted to a club. Thanks for watching
Hardly any night life in Bedford now, In the 70s to 2000 were the best years there were many night clubs all over bedford. Now there's a minimum choice. All high tech & proffessional doormen now, before you knew them all by name & chatted, everyone remembers Hans from around early 80s. No character now just posh drinks & no sweating sticky dance floors. Go out, dance to great music, chat a bird, get sick n pissed stagger home. Perfect.
Interesting nighttime video. I was in the American Air Force, stationed 10 miles from Bedford back in the 70's. Recognized High Street, Great River Ouse embankment. but Midland Road looked different from how I remember. I guess there are bound to be changes in 40+ years. .
Hi pgh4, thanks for watching. I think it probably has changed a lot in 40 years. I guess you were based in Chick sands. Stay safe in America. Cheer Andy
@@andrewwardmedia I was at Chicksands Oct. 72 to Feb. 74. Regular trips into town were either to Shefford nearby or Bedford or Hitchin. Not as frequent to Luton. Many trips to London via British Rail. The US left Chicksands in 1997. Best wishes with the virus vaccine.
I don't think Bedford has ever been renowned for it's night life but has always had enough bars and pubs to cater for it's 150k population. However, I suppose 'the lucky generation' grew up in the early 80s and 90s who had such a choice of the memorable and divine hotspots around at the time such as Phase 3, Winkles, 5s Bar, Chicagos, Charlie Ms, Sweetings, Nitespot, Saracens Head, The Venue, Swifts (Pig and Whistle & Chaplins) and Riviera Lights. plus of course the unforgettabe Castaways for the more 'travelled ravers' We were well and truly blessed and regardless of the era, didn't we have a nice time!
Hi 4737Carlin, so true what you say. I can remember going to these bars/clubs in the early 90s. So much more of a choice. Thanks for watching and your comments, much appreciated. Andy
