The actual aircraft that crashed in that incident was a special modified version, the NF-104A. There were only two made, and they had a hydrogen peroxide rocket motor in the tail for the highest stage of the flight. They were designed purely for breaking the altitude record.

Dad was a F-104 IP in the 1960's. Sadly he passed on 01 Jan 2021. I would like to think this how he "slipped the surly bonds of earth."

I love 104s, but if you've ever seen one you'll realise the unique engine 'howl' is a big part of the blast.

Great video! Add copyright to description, please. It would be a great pity if some company claim you have stolen the footage. You desrve more views.

A couple takeaways: at :26 the pilots closes the canopy, but doesn't Costco it. On several "high speed" scenes, flaps & slats are deployed. Just sayin.

Kelly Johnson and Gerhard Neumann would both have probably found that music offensive.

Sai Mahidhar No, the "G" configuration is the widowmaker. It's the variant that was used by the German Luftwaffe.

Sai Mahidhar That would be the F-104G. Not all models of the plane as a whole.

Germany had a hard time with the F 104 G. Post WW II, Luftwaffe stopped flying. Starting again with the F 104 G and few seasoned pilots, early aircraft and pilot losses were high. Germans nicknamed it "widowmaker" and it was for them. German demands on aircraft and pilots were very high with F 104 G performing roles outside it's design envelope and flying in darkness and bad weather. Other nations had losses but none so severe as Germany.

Well I don't know what kind of music Max W. likes but I'd rather hear the howling roar of that mighty GE J-79 engine than I would that shitty music!

With that in mind, you can go and watch the movie as Lars described above "The Right Stuff. Dir. Philip Kaufman. Warner Bros., 1983. Film. "
