FROZEN Overnight Wall TENTS

- Going out in the brutal cold and working hard is very fulfilling. I have a new campsite that's dilapidated and mice have had their way for too long. Now I'm moving in and I need to get it all cleaned up before I put my new Russian Bear tent on the platform. But before I do all that, I spend a beautiful evening at my main campsite and enjoy a mouth-watering meal cooked over an open fire. Join me as I take a big breath of frozen air and challenge myself in deadly cold conditions.
Here are all of my tiny cabin hot tent videos: www.youtube.co....

How much experience do I have?
That depends. I am pretty good at starting a fire these days and gathering wood. But I don't really have true bushcraft skills and definitely no carpentry or construction skills or training. I could probably make a shelter if I had to, but that would just come from all the RUclips training (watching) over the years.
I love your videos. For the last two years, I have been suffering from spine pain. Recently, I had a reconstruction, and I do mean reconstruction of my entire spine. I had to meet and interview surgeons. The simple way of life you have the strength and love to do is beautiful. I love it. I used to engage in less intense winter camping in VT but no longer can do it. It is wonderful to watch you enjoy the trips so much. And the food! OY Vey
Man!!! Two weeks in a row!!! Woohoo!!
Honestly, when I think about buying land - this is how I'd want to use it. No fancy cabin. Just a tent and wooden structure like this
Welp.... I have to watch it again... What I really like about your videos is, well, here is an example. When you first get in your tent and you are starting up the stove and you're explaining how you didn't have things ready etc, it's like I'm right there in the tent and we're having a chat over that subject. You have this great way of pulling me right there in the tent at that moment. It's really a gift!! The music you chose is absolutely perfect! The peacefulness of the music sooooooo fits with the scenery and sets the whole ambience of your videos. I don't live in northern Minnesota and NW Wisconsin anymore. I live in southern Missouri in the Ozarks, which I love. The older I got the less I enjoyed the cold. But I do reminisce about when I lived there and was in the -20 and -30 F temps. Ice fishing, snowmobiling, hockey, trapping etc. I drive a truck locally and days can get pretty stressful at times. Your videos are a peaceful and enjoyable way to wind down after work in the evenings. I'm glad I "stumbled" across your channel.. Thanks, Jay!! You bring back many great memories.
Blessings,
Bridge
Yea peppermint oil is your friend here.
It is an amazing deterrent for any new residents coming in. Those already there if any usually will need to be trapped. Its usually not enough to make them leave there home but they definitely wont go explore somewhere new with that scent.
I find this works great and lasts longer then drizzling it around. Get a half dozen or so small plastic bottles (pill bottle size). Drill a couple small 1/8" ish holes in the lids. Fill loosely with cotton balls or something similar. 15-30 drops peppermint oil in each bottle. Cap them and disperse them. I'm guessing 3-4 per tent will do. Then top up when you notice they need it should be couple months.
Lastly if you get a decent size bottle 120ml + the cost will drastically go down.
Vids are always a treat. Thanks Jay!
Excellent tips!
Finally! I told somebody that sawdust is always generated, but I don't see anyone retaining it for fires as it should be great kindling, and he said I was wrong. He gave some kind of explanation that made no sense. I didn't want to argue. I know that fire logs are often made from compressed sawdust. It's light, and has lots of space for combustion.
Thank you for your vindication and common sense.
I wish I could remember who it was and send him this video. But it's not worth the time of research.
You should always have a small tool pouch with you with common handyman tools. Might need to fix snowmobile in the middle of nowhere or minor repairs at the tent. Pliers, screwdrivers, wire, electrical tape, adjustable wrench etc. From Toronto Eh.
I find wolves very exciting, too! LOL Grizzly tracks are one thing...
Really enjoy your camps. Seasons Greetings! 👍🇨🇦🎅🎁🧦🔥📷🌲
Thanks, Marian.
Jay, get yourself some peppermint oil and put it all around the floor frame on the new site, this should help keep the mice and other small animals away.
Now that's a great supper, Jay, I use either boneless pork loin chops or chopped pork steaks and add cream of mushroom soup. Simmer until tender, mash taters with gravy, comfort food dude!! Your meal looks mighty tasty too and your cc mini loaves turned out perfectly golden brown, I've always been told to set the temperature on the oven 25* lower than the directions say, always works for me, you learn something new everyday of your life, you're doing great
I don't eat pork but it sounds hella good
Reminds me of the times my father in law before he died and I spend in a canvas 10x20 tent we heated with wood and then oil in the upper lower peninsula of Michigan
Great video.. Was watching the weather network minus 45 coming your way. Take care
Yep! Extreme cold warning here now.
Good afternoon .wow it look's cold .keep safe out .there..
Great preplanning for your return! SO smart!
The file direction is about the perceived longevity of the file, not the result on the chain. And as tested by several youtubers the longevity of the file is not affected, not so much that it matters to most people anyway
Just a note, round wood will last longer when stoking the stove for the night.:)
Hi Jay
Long time viewer. I am a machinist so I know a little bit about files. By dragging a file you wear out the file's cutting edge
Always push away on the file having the tang (or handle ) near you.
Cheers
Steph
Thanks Steph!
Hey Jay. For the first time in my life I had mouse problems in a vehicle. 2010 Rav4. I goggled after catching a couple in traps. I guess they hate peppermint so I put drops of Essential oils on the carpets. Reset traps and none have been back.
Yes, peppermint oil works wonders for deterring all kinds of critters; have used it in the RV for years as well as in my home here in Florida!
Jay, on your fire ring when you're trying to get it going, pay attention to which way the wind is blowing the smoke. Lift the side of the ring opposite that direction and put a 2" or so stub of branch under it to hold it up. That will catch the wind and accelerate the fire!! Just my two cents. 🍻🔥🔥🔥
Excellent tips!
... sure glad that you made this point; every fire needs oxygen! A good fire = a Happy Camper, lol
I love how excited you get!!!!! AWESOME!!!!
Thank you 🙏🏻
You too!
If you don't come up with anything better, the futon frame would be good to stack wood on to keep it up off the ground. Take it apart and get double the length! Happy Holidays and thanks for the great videos!
Excellent idea
The tent coming down was an End of Era but can't wait to see the Russian bear tent!!!!
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND THE FAMILY
You too, Carol!
I have a 60 volt 16 inch Dewalt. We had to clear a 24 inch oak from a trail with it, making 3 cuts + other things we had to cut (branches, brush and small trees that had been brought down when the oak fell, etc.). I wasn't sure it was up to the task, but a friend of mine did it on one battery with power to spare. That is more than I ever expected from the saw . . . I think I'll keep it. Battery powered outdoor equipment has come a long way in the last 10 years. If you had told me as a kid that we would have all of these battery powered tools that work great, I would have told you to go have your head examined.
I agree. The battery powered world has jumped significantly over the last decade. I really like my chainsaw and enjoy using it. Thanks for the comment David!
Jay I just enjoy your videos so much. Thanks for getting me thru these days at home.
👍💯🙏
I wouldn't worry so much about the wolves! A few years ago I went outside for my morning ciggie, and noticed that my cat was staring at something behind me. I looked around and saw nothing. But, when I looked the second time I saw 2 wolfs that had just brought down a deer! I walked right out in the middle of wild nature. But, when the wolfs saw me they ran away. I grabbed my cat and put him back inside. I felt really bad. If I would have gone out a few minutes sooner that deer might have had a different outcome. And my presence scared the wolfs away from their fresh meal. I felt so bad! That experience made me unafraid of wolfs. NO...I would not pet one! But, they fear you just as much as you fear them! They are a good omen!
Russian bear tents look cool, personally i would prefer the setup you have now. lots off room ,place to cook and place to eat... just seems safer and better to me.
I don’t get why people feel the need to critique RUclipsrs for the way they do things or think they know everything about everything. You are obviously passionate about bushcrafting and like to share that passion with your fans. Who cares how you sharpen your chainsaw blade, it cut through the wood didn’t it? Someone felt the need to tell you how to cut trees down, that you were doing it wrong. The tree came down didn’t it? Someone told you that you should have wood ready for you when you get there and not to cut it when you get there. You always have/get a nice warm fire going don’t you? People should just enjoy you enjoying yourself out there. It takes a lot of work to film everything and then edit it and upload it. It just grinds my gears when people nit pick over trivial things that don’t matter. I enjoy watching you be so happy when you’re there, doing something that you’re obviously passionate about. So keep doing your thing Jay, and disregard the ‘experts’. 👍🏻❄️
Edit ~> those oatmeal chocolate chip loaves looked divine!!
Thanks Miffet Blue!!
@@jaylegere you’re welcome! I’m looking forward to the new adventure with the new tent and the new location!
Jay, I remember you saying you didn't like holding a piece of wood when chopping it for fear of hurting yourself...so I have a helpful hint for you just in time for Christmas! I saw another outdoorsman use a smaller piece of wood he had already chopped when making kindling to steady the log he was working on. That kept his hand well away from the axe! If you try it, and it works for you, let us see you using this method in future videos! MERRY CHRISTMAS from the US!
Very cool idea! Thanks Iron Ear!
@@jaylegere To be fair, it wasn't my idea. But I have a wood burning stove at home and have whacked myself before so I understand...and nobody asks to go to the Emergency Room for Christmas! God bless!
@@ironear7748 i believe that was TA Woodsman outdoors.
Yep, he gave a real master class on axe techniques.
An old trick that I used to use, was to bump my bacon far on my kindling so it would quickly light in the morning! I learned to do that in 1968!
If your saw is just throwing dust, its probably the rakers. besides sharpening the teeth, you need to grind down the rakers on occasion. Its easy done, just get a oregon depth guage and flat file, and your good to go.
You know what would be cool!!?? When you have your other site finished, you book weekend Winter vacations in whichever one you weren't using!!!
Beautiful !! Great job .......as a kid I had to help my Dad , cut wood with a 2 handed cross-cut saw .
Another awesome adventure. Great idea bringing your solar power bank, they really come in handy. I have 2 × 500 watt power banks..Jackery 500 and Energizer Arc5 with 2 solar panels. Never out of juice. I have the Russian Bear UP2 hot tent with insulated footprint. I also added the 3×2 vestibule ( 9 feet long ×6 feet wide with stove jack..great for storing wood, gear, ever put your skidoo or ATV to keep them out of the winter elements. If your worried about wildlife around your tent, bring a fire arm, Bear spray and air horn. Your best bet is not to cook in the tent,I never do and never had any issues with wildlife for over 40 years in Northern Ontario. Thanks for the share 👊 💥 Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 🤶 Seasons Greetings 🎊🎉🍻🇨🇦
Hi Iceman! Yep, I'm loving the jackery. I have the UP 5 with the footprint. Exciting times!
Another great one, Jay! Thanks.
For best sharpening your chainsaw the easiest way to remember that is the same temperature freezing is 32°, so if water freezes at 32°, sharpen your chainsaw at 32°. I can tell you're a newbie but I don't know if that battery powered saw will pull that came through the wood at 32° and don't forget to touch up the Lakers which are the curly little nubs that run behind the tooth you'll need a flat file for that and you should use a gauge to file the rakers and you can buy those they're fairly inexpensive if your saw grabs too much take it to 33 and keep going up to 35 if it keeps grabbing too much don't put your face over top of the saw cuz if it does kick back you're not going to look very pretty
Mothballs all around the bear tent Jay!!
Jay your baking literally mage me shout out loud , Yes ! I’m a baker lol . I’d love to see you in one Of the yurts they use in Siberia but I know that would take animal skins but boy they look cosy
Mice hate peppermint essential oils. So sprinkle that around and you shouldn't have a problem. Bonus, it smells great!
That noise was just your battery's fans turning on, good thing. It detected a relatively high amp load and knew things were heating up.
Thank you, Jay, for putting out this video about Overnight wall tent I got to say you host your camp video awesome keep up the work up the good work Merry Christmas
One my favourite outdoors channel
Happy holiday folks
Over the past couple years I've been subscribed to the channel, your skills have definitely improved. Glad you are still enjoying the outdoors.
Merry Christmas my friend from Makedonija..🎄🇲🇰
MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM CANADA!
For mice protection, sprinkle peppermint oil around. Mice hate the smell, but it's natural & won't hurt the environment.
Thanks!
thanks for doing Celsius...making progress with world unity
You should save that sawdust for that little port-a-potty you use, so you can cover up your excrements. It keeps it from smelling while you have it in your tent. Whenever you go to saw some more wood, just lay a tarp down underneath it so it will be easy to collect and placed somewhere dry. BTW, did you cover your propane tank with snow again this year so won't freeze? I want to get a couple of those jackeries as well. They are so handy!!
Jay the Russian bear tent is an amazing thing! Wolves actually get confused by the patterns on it. You won’t regret it!
Enjoyed it Jay, Mississippi Outpost over and out
As a human who lives in the tropics, I really really want to feel the snow :(
Inshallah one day
The file fills with metal when you go back + forth, doesn't hurt the saw blade but wears out the files - + don't forget to file the rakes with a flat file, it can make a huge difference - stay warm
There is a debunking video about back n forth filing somewhere here on RUclips.
@@WhiskeyGulf71 Fireball tools… surprisingly he hasn’t been hunted down and killed by RUclips filing n*zis yet
The one problem when sharpening the chain and filing backwards is it fills up with the steel as a file is designed to be used in one direction. As well it rolls the cutters of which you do not want.Nice video again Jay....have fun and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays..Fred in Thunder Bay,Ontario
Watch fireball tool bust that myth with his file
Don't worry Jay those are just poodles howling
Ha
Brilliant Jay, your tent is in such beautiful surroundings, I'm looking forward to seeing the bear tent go up, and you getting your first nights sleep in it. The videos are nice and relaxing, and I like your chilled out manner, Merry Christmas to you, and see you next time.
Thanks, Alan! Merry Christmas to you too. Video next Monday!
Merry christmas to u
Do I sense a new theme here, new video every Monday!?
do you recharge your Jackery with Solar panels? I use 100 watt set up from Harbor Freight...
Yeah I like the chilled out nature too. And I go electric.
Dinner looks yummy
the main thing is to sharpen them on a regular schedule as used...That sawdust & oil really worked awesome, my new go to.
Yes, I definitely need to keep up with the sharpening! Thanks, Alan.
Merry Christmas from Thunder Bay Ontario Canada from Lawrence (Snowball) Spooner
Canada looks like a beautiful place! Hopefully CANZUK happens so allow free movement from the UK
Never have to worry about wolves …I lived in northwestern Ontario for 38 + years in a cabin ..while they often passed through my yard..or met them while hunting ..never did they show any hostility towards me ..however..you definitely have to worry about wolverines..they are destructive.and would cause you some issues if they wanted to..regardless..keep up the great videos..would love to see you fishing a bit more though 👍👍😀😀
Yes, Wolverines can definitely be scary.
Harry, from my personal experience with 2 wolves I learned that they were more afraid of me then I was of them! And I'm a tiny person! 5'2" 90lbs. So, I am little compared to these wolves! I walked out in the middle of 2 wolves who had JUST brought down a fresh kill deer. Right in my backyard! My backyard is at the base of a mountain. The wolves saw me and ran! They abandoned their kill when they saw me! I felt so bad! But, it goes to show you that wolves should not be feared. They are more afraid of humans then we are of them! All I did was stand up and the wolves ran away! Now I dunno about wolverines. But, people should not be so afraid of wolves! Just don't have any raw meats at your campsite! I love wolves very much! They are magnificent! Wolves rarely attack humans. Same with sharks. Sharks rarely attack humans on purpose! Wildlife is wonderful!
And yes, one of the 2 wolves had a tracking device around it's neck! So, it had been caught before!
@@AsIseeitPattiDail so true ..wolves have had a bad rap going back to the beginning of time ..of course there have been those that were starving or sick I guess ..that may have caused a problem but as far as I know they don’t mean humans any harm ..thank you for your comment Katerina
also you could use your chain saw clipings and use left over cooking oil for your fire starter.
I really enjoy the videos and time spent with a really nice guy. It’s the only way I’ll ever winter camp, but you make a great case for it’s cozyness and beauty. Good job!
It's definitely the best time to camp!
Have a great holiday
Hey I will take some of that bread ! Great video.
setting up 100-400 watts of solar panels will help. you can get 2 small portable panels, that plug right into the power bank... charging up the bank when your not using it... or letting you use 100 watts or so consant without draining. good for lots of little things.
I love using the little oven at my winter camp.It sure works really well.
Looking forward to seeing the new tent.
You're videos are amazing.. thank you
*your
I find your videos enjoyable and educational. Living vicariously through you! Thanks👏👏 Stay safe, be well and see ya next time👋👋
Thanks, Mary.
Love your videos and adventures. Not scared to make mistakes and always willing to adapt. Keep it coming.
Wow Jay that looks amazing .... nothing better then smoked Pork on an open fire ... enjoy my Brother 😁🏆
You should look into getting a solar panel for the jackery to charge it when at camp
Here's a survival tip, Jay... You should at all cost avoid eating anything deadly (23:32).
Never
You need a bar stool to sit on when you are eating or viewing outside of your tent door and using the makeshift transformer table there!
Thanks Jay for a fun video.
You should buy one of those laser tempature gauges! Mechanics use em, hobbiest ect. Just point click and you got your oven temp very accurately. They are not expensive either!
checked in to my hotel room earlier this afternoon. at 29, this is the first Christmas, I'm spending with out family. first Christmas I'm spending alone actually. it was a joy watching the video. can't wait for the next one jay. Merry Christmas
I saw a camper in Squamish this summer that showed a bottle of coyote urine based product that he gets at the hunting store to keep mice out of the engine area of his camper van. That might be of some help with your mouse issue at the tent? Great episode brother, as usual. Merry Christmas to you.
you might try getting a small generator for your snow machine that when your jackory runs low you can take a snow ride and charge it.
You should be able to get a charge cable that comes off your lights.
fun stuff that a new chain for a chainsaw is usually cheaper then a good sharpening tool :)) so i just replace mine with a new one when it goes dull
Another great vid Jay. Looking forward to the next one. Thanks
Thanks Dan. Another one next Monday!
You did a good 👍 on the baking. I would have liked to see you burn some blueberry muffins.😄
Believe you'll be safe... and you will be safe. The new tent sounds interesting!
Would love to spend a few days out in the wilderness like this. Keep posting your videos 👌 merry Christmas from the uk.
Merry Christmas, Sharon!
i feel the same also from uk
Hi Jay, thanks so much for another awesome video. Please keep them coming as you build your new tent. Have a great holiday season!
Thanks Tanya. Always nice to get a comment from you. Happy holidays to you too.
Just got back from a 3 night camp enjoy watching your channel have a great Christmas and New year 2022 👍👏
Awesome. I hope you had a great time, Andrew. Merry Christmas to you too!
Merry Christmas Jay!
You too, Debbie!
Merry Christmas from the base of Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, Colorado, ! Wish we had some snow HERE!!
Merry Christmas to you, Stephanie
Can't wait to see this Russian tent. Stay well- Kurt
Thanks for sharing with us Jay. Looking forward to seeing you have new adventures. Hopefully with your girl ?
Stay safe and healthy, wish you all the best. Have a good Christmas and New Year. Sudbury Ontario Canada.
Hey John. I'm hoping she will do an overnighter with me in the new year!
I feel the situation and the weather so cold,,
Hi Jay: I’m glad I came across your channel. The cold and snow is nice to see as here in Southern California….well you know….surfs up dude 🏄🏼♂️.
I grew up in Ohio by Lake Erie. The lake effect winds coming down from Canada and winters were nothing like where you are. Happy Holidays to you. Be safe , Tom
Thanks Thomas! I'm glad you found the channel. Thanks for taking the time to comment! Jay
As far as sharpening both directions. It's not just that you do not get the best sharpening results but what happens is it ruins the actual file. It doesn't take much to dull a file and it is a bugger to get the chain sharp.
If you know you know and we all learn from experience more than anything.
Thank you Jay for another brilliant video. 😊💫
Thanks, Mandy
its hard to imagine how beautiful it is to be enjoying the vastness of where you are / great video a good fire starter is cotton balls soaked in vasoline
Hey Jay are you going to put plywood around the lower part of the Bear tent like the other one? 12-21-21 gotten about 4 in of white stuff on the ground. Warm up coming in the next couple of days. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Hi Pam. I have no plans to use wood with the Russian tent. It's not designed for that.
Not to be that guy, but, ah hell, those ain't wedges Jay those are halves. lol. I Love the content 👌.
My 10 yr old son and I started winter camping last year. Will be going out again in a week or two.
Ha. Yeah. They were half spuds for sure!
Another great video Jay. The night shot of building the fire was really well done. You have that camera figured out pretty good. Joe would be proud of that cooking over the fire. All the best and Merry Christmas from Newfoundland and Labrador.
Thanks David! Merry Christmas from the NWT.
Nice, can’t wait to see that new tent, thanks for another great video Jay, have a good one!☺️
Just found you.. love your content! Wonderfully positive and a joy to watch when there is soooooo much crap out there. Blessings to you. Rob in Thunder Bay
Hypnotizing content - can´t stop watching your journey!
I didn't know what a pine marten was so I "googled" it, looks like a weasel or meercat, interesting. I sure wouldn't want in the sleeping bag with me. Your meals looks delicious , I enjoy watching.
Yeah pine Martin's can be dangerous and they can destroy a tent if no one around
