I’m a colour blind graphic designer (mild protan), yes i know that sounds dumb. When I applied to my graphic design school they invited me for an interview, they were concerned that I couldn’t be a professional designer with color blindness. I explained that I think there is more to design than just color and I think that my disability is not severe enough to limit my ability to create good looking designs. I also explained that there are solutions to color blindness like screen alterations and special glasses. They decided to let me in. Teacher where often surprised by my work and the use of color. It was exceptional from other students and it looked good anyways since only hue is effected with my color blindness. Today I’m running a profitable graphic design company and I’m designing may creative and good looking assets. Sometimes I struggle with a colorfull design, but this is often resolved by using technology and help from other designers. Moral of the story is that I don’t think a disability should be seen as a disadvantage and in today’s time we can use technology and the internet to our advantage. Keep fighting until the bitter end or until the sweet success!
Ooo did you know that there’s color blind glasses? Maybe you should get them? Not that you necessarily need to of course , just sometimes for when you’re struggling too much with color!
Unfortunately the B&W adjustment layer is not the most accurate B&W transformation. There is another very common method by using a black solid on top of everything and setting that to the blend mode "color", thus removing any color. But that's not perfect either. The best way is to use the sGray color profile. Just go into your Photoshop settings and set your color proofing profile to "sGray" (instead of CMYK). Now you can toggle it via Ctrl + Y, it's more accurate and you don't need an extra layer! :D
@@YVZSTUDIOS wow I loved the b&w tip, and being able to set it to sGray and hit cmd-y (on a Mac) is so easy and awesome -- TY guys! (btw to all those that want to do this, proof setup is in the "View" menu in Photoshop 2019
Life is amazing ! 5 years ago I wasn't even thinking about product design and how to use color. Today I stumbled across this video and I LOVED IT! It made me want to learn more .Sending love and light. Thank you so much
By far THE most helpful breakdown for understanding color I’ve ever had. I’ve heard the terms a million times and just was always confused, but now I feel as though I have a solid understanding of hue, saturation, and value! Thanks guys!
A small tip about using a black and white adjustment layer for checking your relative color values: by default, a black and white adjustment layer changes the value of your colors based on the color's hue and *will not* give you an accurate relative value. The Black & White adjustment layer is meant to emulate black and white film, where different hues would appear to be brighter or darker based on the type of film used and the different processes involved in developing it. To get a value-accurate desaturated image, either use a 50% gray layer set to the "Color" (or saturation) blending mode, or use a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and turn the saturation to -100 in the Master channel.
I don’t know if you a natural or if you struggled a lot and insisted on it, but you have become an outstanding communicator, Greg. Thank you for your videos!
Man, another Greg Gunn classic. Been doing this design thing for a long time now, but never felt like I’ve mastered color. This video breaks things down in a way that helps bring it all home. Sharing with my team.
15 years deep in design and still learning. Thanks for the reminder, sometimes I forget how fun colours are, especially when all your clients are wealth and financial companies
I have seen videos of an hour long about how to use color and they all show the color wheel and how color schemes are made from color wheel or they will tell websites for color schemes which is not helpful at all. This is one of the best videos on how to use color well done.
I would have loved for the timelapse part to be in real time and to have heard your thought process during that part. I feel like that could have been the most valuable part of the video.
OMG thank you very much for sharing this kind of CLEAR EXPLANATION!!!! i think my eyes or color taste has gone bad with my age all the time.. now i know why my coloring is really bad!!! wow!! what a revelation!. thank you!!!
Been following since I saw Jose and Chris explain how to extract brand values and use them in a branding exercise. It helped me become a successful designer. You guys came a long way and the content just keeps getting better and better. Witty, tons of value and cool editing! Nice job guys! Much appreciated!
Designers @ facebook should watch your video, it ll give them perspective to what they r doing, I mean going all in with black and white!!! Color is life.. 👌🏼
Greg should do more videos. I love the care-free style of his videos. Btw great tips for trying to suck less at using colors xD Would love more videos on colors or similar topics :)
You heard me! Our in-house design team has an Illustration Club just starting out and today a lot of us identified selecting colour palettes is a real challenege.

Thank you for this video. Color has always been intimidating but if I want to be a successful Mograph designer, I need to get out of this fear box and experiment. Thank you for this awesome video.

do you have instagram?
I too am colour blind (deuteranomaly) but I don’t let that stop me, even if I do draw a red tree 🙂
That B&W filter was the best. Thanks for the tip.

I can literally feel my eyes cool down when you did that adjustment.
4 years of design school and this one video made me 🤯🤯🤯
Thank you Futur for not blasting loud music during the learning session, really appreciate it!
By far THE most helpful breakdown for understanding color I’ve ever had. I’ve heard the terms a million times and just was always confused, but now I feel as though I have a solid understanding of hue, saturation, and value! Thanks guys!
That is fantastic to hear! And my goal for this video. Glad it helped solidify things.

This sounds like a very useful tip but it confused me way more than it should lol
@@itsalejandroe He's talking about photoshop layers
i tried it and all of them gave the same result

Damn, using the technique of turning the picture b&w to distinguish the contrast is really genious! Will definitely implement it to my workflow!
That black and white filter is pure gold. Thanks mate
It’s a handy one.
Lots of gems in this color tutorial.

I liked your transformations but those bad examples were kinda awesome too.
I'm loving these more illustration focused videos. I'm always struggling with color so I just use existing palettes to use in my work.
Color can be a struggle, but it's a powerful tool when used right.
