Enjoyed your video of Billingshurst I'm looking forward to having a drink in the Six bells pub on my next visit home. which will be 2021 if all goes well with our international Flights Western Australia.
my grandparents live here and i LOVE this village it may not have a large amount of shops but its a very friendly community , and the caramel donuts in truffles the bakery are worth dying for. I have now moved back here 😂
You forgot to mention the Post Office! On the right hand side of St Mary's Church @6:34 we were told as children that this is where they sharpened their swords and spears. Behind you at the end of the video there are some houses that weren't there in the 70's. It was just overgrown along Stane Street with a much older house in the middle of the overgrowth that we explored and thought was haunted!
I grew up here! and went to the infant, junior and secondary schools. I'd go and spend my pocket money in the newsbox as they had a ton of penny sweets on the back wall! My parents bought their first house in cherry tree and later moved to 3 farriers close until 1998?? then we moved to southwater, pulborough and later horsham! My friends and I would ride our bikes down forge way, over into the housing estate and come out past the library, or shoot down the hill from the garage into the town centre. We spent lots of time in the woods by the church building dens too and up roman way climbing trees before they added more houses. So many memories there!! I live in wales now so don't visit much if ever these days.
Thanks for the video, just as good as always. Maybe you could give us a walk around Burwash, home of Kipling, and the location of many happy boyhood holidays for me. Cheers.
Richard Vobes - the Magog (female Morris) and the Broadwood Morris (men) are very active in the horsham area - well worth investigating (any excuse for a pint!)
Dean Cooper The sainsbury’s used to be a Budgens. The garage you’re referring to was further up the road. Now become housing. I used to live in billingshurst, I have seen it change quite a lot
Yes it was a garage, at one point being southern counties British Leyland dealership. My dad bought a rover sd1 from there back in 1982. Malaya was up the road where truffles is, and sold Porsche and Mercedes before moving to portslade.
Now that's a video. Especially the beautiful English woman at the 1:48 mark. Nothing like a well designed English woman. Indeed, Sussex does walk. Eaglegards...
My 2xGreat Grandparents William Merritt & Emily Goacher & their family lived at Billingshurst, primarily at Easelands & Great Daux Farms. He was an Agricultural labourer. Both are buried at St Mary's church.
Another beautiful little village Richard. Loved The Kings Head (especially all their amazing flower baskets💐) & the old church 💒(really liked the beautiful music flowing out!🎶). Btw...Been waiting for you to do something on a proper Saxon village (so was interesting to hear history of the church) cause I don't think I have shared that part of my geneology w/ you yet. Should I look for a certain vid title of yours that would delve more into this?
It depends what you mean by a Saxon village. Many villages have Saxon routes, but there are no saxon buildings left I am afraid. Just the odd church here and there and most of them have been mucked about with since then.
02:46 that building. In its place was a small row of shops included was a barbers and i remember very well an italian restaurant that was owned by a friend of my mums. They demolished it and built that building in its place but has always remained empty! Roomer has it that it was supposed to become a morrison’s but since the supermarket opposite became sainsbury’s (used to be a Budgens) they decided there would be too much competition and they wouldn’t get any business. Also i’ve rung the bells at St. Mary’s!
I know I already watched (& commented) months ago, but had to rewatch when I found out Billinghurst is where my Buckman & Rowland ancestors came from. Such a beautiful village, but looking at the buildings (except maybe parts of the church) sure any of them were there in 1680 when they left w/ William Penn for America.
Nice one Richard. A beautiful, largely unspoiled and highly inspirational A Road. STANE STREET MOMENTS (verse 4 of 4) Criss cross branch tunnels cool chestnut green Rook patrolled hedgerows, spied crop in between Salmon pink, chalky blue lime wash sedate Time immune cottages thatch before slate Lazy hot distance through long solstice days Reminders of bygone yet quaint southern ways A stage play redeemed by one member of cast Yesterday... watches today hurry past...JB08
Billingshurst. Before the late 90's, it was a small village. In the late 90's-early 2000's the housing estate Penfold Grange was built, bringing a lot more population into the village, also introducing the A29 bypass. As I speak more houses are being built, and the countryside around is getting tourn up. Going on Stane Street towards Horsham, there was this wonderful grass field, with the electricity pylons passing through. Well, now it's being turned into an Industrial Estate. The problem is that they are making it a Town, but it doesn't have all the facilietes. Like for example there is only one very small Doctor's Surgery, which when I lived here, before much of the houses, was compact anyway. Good Video and nice to see it again
Sussex Walks: Exploring Billingshurst 2110PM 2.4.23 hello, R, i was watching ever decreasing circles and i thought: this does have the look of Bournemouth Wickford then Kent sprang to mind... then i thought: they could easily splice locations together to create the show.. then i saw richard briars stood outside the railway station and it stated: Billingshurst... or what i took to be the sign of the train station reading: Billingshurst. anyone else with decent eyesight knocking about - as it could pay dividends... sorry, i forgot, none of these can read or write.
The six bells was used for the shots outside the pub in ever decreasing circles. The outside shots of their house was also filmed in the village, one of the cul-de-sacs off silver lane.
@@marknorman1084 Comments on ‘Sussex Walks: Exploring Billingshurst’ 1840pm 31.8.23 ummm... interesting. strange how they flit about from region to region to get a shot of, say, a train station or a pub... same with sorry - that seemed to be filmed in various places. and minder, although allegedly based in the east end or various london gaffs, had a few outside location shots, mainly whilst he drove his jag, in rochdale - driving past st edmonds church for one...
Not really a village anymore, as Horsham District Council, have built on every green space they can, and are now busily building over what was once Greenbelt.
Possibly: The pub name 'King's Head' can refer to whichever King was on the throne when that particular pub/inn/tavern was first opened, or renamed. Some pub names are a bit more obvious: the King George, the Queen Victoria etc. The reason why there are more King's Head's is because there have been more Kings than Queens.
Really enjoyable Richard... thank you so much. 🤗👍🏻😘
Patti Smith Thanks Patti.
Delightful village.
Thanks Ian.
Interesting video! I've passed through Billingshurst on the train a couple of times but not seen the village so it was good to watch this video.
A place I have always bypassed, but will have to stop now and have a drink in The Six Bells.
Graham Mcmullen Well I cannot vouch for the insides but it looks great from without.
Im sure that was Paul driving past in his Ford Capri lol..Ever Decreasing Circles was shot here wasnt it?
Filmed in Dell Lane, just behind the Church path. I used to deliver to the house on my paper round. Over 30 bloody years ago 😂

Hi, I was wondering what the pub, The Six Bells, is like to go to? Friendly? Do they do nice food?
WOW awesome village beautiful place I could live there. Great 🚶 Rich might have to come here take with my 📷.

Mark Webb Oh yes. I shall have to look into that one Mark.
My mother is a Morris dancer and so I’m familiar with many of the pubs around Horsham - the six bells is a great pub!
Oh yes - I am sure she is very familiar! Great to see an English tradition carried out still. :)

One of few churches you have visited where there's actual singing going on
Yes indeed.
the sainsbury local store , used to be a petrol garage , i stopped there on my bicycle on route to chichester.
So much changes - one can't keep up!

Interesting this video has 7k view s yet the others earlier were under 3k so is there something special about billingshurst
That is a baffling question.
My Nan used to live here before she sadly passed. I used to love exploring with the friends I made here.
Lots to explore in the countryside around there! Thanks for watching.

Thanks for that - a shame they knocked down a building and the new one has been empty ever since!
Wasn't there an art shop there at some point?
@@nickclarke847 there were several in the same building I think, now I think it's a pet shop
Love the vid. So lovely... although "taking a wiz" has an entirely different meaning here in the USA!
I have taken that on board and changed the title. We also use have that unfortunate expression. :)

I think the church spire was rebuilt by Canadian soldiers during ww2.... they used maple wood i believe.

Such a shame to see so many houses being built in the rural areas. And there is no going back!
My ancestor Thomas Wadey was born here in 1669.

4:57 "A hurst is a name for a hillock" Not familiar with either of those words?
I found this definition for "hurst": "Sandbank in the sea or a river"
I guess that is a similar thing, a small hillock in a river making a sandbank. See here: en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/hurst
