That sleep in such a small car must have been uncomfortable I feel for you Stuart, but needs must when the devil.... having that stuff delivered would have cost an arm and a leg so it had to be done. Wow Marina look at you, good for you trying out something new, learning a new skill can be scary, but you just jumped straight in there, and did really well if I might add, excellent. Thanks for sharing guys and see you both next week. xx
Good job on the first attempt of TIG welding. As for pointers and tips have a look at the countless videos on TIG welding here on youtube. For me, I'd say ditch those heavy and clumsy MIG/stick welding gloves. For TIG you need just minimal protection against UV and heat, so find some thin leather (gardening?) gloves which will help a lot with feeding in the welding rods. With that also wear a long sleeved shirt against the UV radiation.
Brilliant first attempt Marina! What was really good was seeing you handle the Argon bottle ! It is vital that you keep the transport cap on until the bottle is needed. You also lashed the bottle, this is super important. When a bottle is dropped while moving without the transport cap and the then exposed valve assembly breaks the bottle is like a guided missile and will destroy everything in its path. Something I have seen! so these simple safety steps are always the ones to take.
Impressive, Marina! You're going to be an expert welder soon, no doubt. Thanks for taking us along to Old Blighty, Stu. Seabird is coming along swimmingly (well, not quite yet, but you get my drift) 🙂
Well done on the welding Marina. Do be careful with fire on the boat when welding. A handy fire extinguisher is a good idea. I wish I knew that Stu was near Cambridge as we could have offered a place to sleep. Go well both.
Hello, another week with more interesting work items. Marina your welding work seems to be very good, for first time. Now I have a question about the engine bed & keel. I saw an internet article that a Gulfstar suffered major keel damage and water started coming into the boat rapidly under the engine. I am sure you have checked very thoroughly for any & all cracks around the engine bed in case of keel damage your boat will not flood. Ok, looking forward to next week and a new video. Ciao. geo
Nice start on the welding. IF you will forgive me offering a few tips. Welding in a darker environment help avoid reflection off the inside of the mask making the weld puddle hard to see. Get the helmet setting right so you can see the puddle well. Be carful not to expose your neck when welding or you will get a sunburn. Do whatever you can to shield the weld from wind. There is a type of cup for your welding torch called a "gas lens" They help direct the argon towards the puddle. Helps with wind a bit and lets you turn your gas flow down. Also allows you to stick the electrode out more for better visibility of the puddle. Not too expensive. Keep the tip close to the weld. About the diameter of the electrode. It will help you control the puddle. have fun and practice a lot.
It's important to grind a small bevel on the edges on each workpiece, before you tact your work pieces together before you weld. It you will give you better penetration in your welds when you don't bevel it than afterwards when your clean up the weld it won't have enough weld to hold the two pieces together. If you know what I mean.
Tig welding is the most difficult of the welding techniques if I'm not mistaken. Never done it myself, I actually never got any successful weld together myself. Dad's tick welder was made for heavy duty and I tried to weld thin stuff with it and ended up burning holes into the bits instead of anything else! 😅 So: You did really well! 🤗
Gas is more difficult because of heat management issues with the flame spreading about. With modern tig and a pedal it is not so difficult but it is quite a bit slower than stick or wire feed.
I am super impressed with your first weld - seriously!!! I remember my first attempts and I reckon I had to go back and sharpen my Tungsten tip a dozen times before I got a decent weld, you must have good steady hands and a natural talent for it. There’s money in that skill Marina, even without a qualification: I can see you paying your way around the world doing all of those quick and simple stainless welding jobs and repairs for other yachties that a fabrication yard wouldn’t be really interested in. If I was to go cruising again I’d either take a welder and some materials; a sewing machine and canvas; or some refrigeration gas, tools and parts to repair fridges on other cruising yachts - there’s always a demand for each in marinas wherever you go and when people get to know that you have the gear and skills you’ll never be without work.
Great to see you learning to TIG weld but please cover your arms , i was practicing in a tee shirt and badly burnt my arms ,was like really bad sun burn
There is a welding sleeve you can use that is like an arm gaiter. It will cover that extra distance so you won't burn holes in your shirt. Maybe they have those where she is? They are quite inexpensive here in the U.S.
Well done Marina for your first try at welding stuart when you go back for the p bracket let them know in advance what you want to do then they can arrange for you to film good publicity for them on the whole a good video with good content
so Stu goes on vacation touring all of Yurop in a car and hitting up pubs and all, while Marina learns one of the hardest types of welding techniques and proceeds to start fixing all of the boats in the South of France. I maybe exaggerate a slight bit, but it was entertaining all the same. Very well done.
Marina, It is so cool that you are learning to weld! Honestly It seems like welding round tubes would be difficult, so I think you did a good job! Can you turn your souvenir into something??? a holder for a fishing pole or make it into something else? Pen holder...flower pot? Toothbrush holder?
Congratulations on your first successful welding experience I really appreciate that you take the extra time to document the journey when I’m sure it would be much faster to just tackle learning to weld. Than you so much! Josh in Oregon USA
I love that nothing phases you Marina, keep on trying all of the tasks you need to carry out to accomplish your refit. Many women would step back and let the man do the "technical" jobs, but you seem to really enjoy getting stuck in to laying up composites and and welding. I've never done any welding myself, but I think that you have done really well for your first attempt. I'm sure that with a little practice you will shortly be producing really professional looking welds!
Learning all the jobs that need doing gives you confidence in the finished work! Remember to keep the gas flowing on the weld for 2 to 3 seconds at the end of the weld, it will keep contaminants from entering the weld puddle. For horizontal welds, a small 'figure 8' motion will give a smooth bead. And for the strongest and most leak proof weld, grind the edges to be joined to form a 'V', you can fill the gap with rod as you go...You're having all the fun while poor Stu is stuck in rainy England!
Het is allemaal mogelijk , lassen kan door vrouwen evenzeer gedaan worden . Ik vind het alleen spijtig dat er weinig vooruitgang is . Werken lukt precies niet zo maar ik wens je veel succes en plezier . Groetjes
great tig marina, its all pratice and confidence. i used to weld along time ago and i bet if i tryed now id have to practice alot. love it guys getting closer by the month
Marina done quite well for her first attempt at welding.. ol seabird is steadily coming together.. thanks for sharing your journey with us and keeping us entertained every Friday..
To stick two tubes together that well as a first try at welding has got to be a win. Most people start with much easier staight lines and don't get any better results.
The watermedows in front of the College are world famous .. in times past they grazed animals there to keep them down. You can tell from the volume of water going through that weir sluce the way the weathers been over here.
I really enjoy your attitude at having a go at all the work you're doing. I'm trying to help my girlfriend develop the same confidence and persistence. Thanks for being a good role model!
Marina! Tig welding! Awesome! Beautiful. You should be proud. 😎 Thank you both for taking us to France and Cambridge. (We drive a hybrid.😂) Love you, both! 😎🥰❤️❤️❤️🤗🤗🤗
A good first try. If I may offer two hints that will improve the strenth? consider introucing a small gap between the two parts to insure the weld extends fully into base (inside of the tube in this case). Secondly, consider increse the speed of your feed and keep the heat more localized to the weld area. Just turn up a little more amps to account for this. A little more pratice and your well on your way.
Bilge looks great, especially with the red light shining through. Also: not a bad weld for a first timer. Remember: wind is the absolute enemy of gas welding. Watch a few more videos of how to weld, maybe. Respect the effort!
Stu don't apologize, you and Marina do great work in showing us how life really goes. I thought Marina's weld was really good. Practice makes perfect. The boat is really coming along. Cheers
Marina, you can be REALLY proud of what you have achieved ! At first it's the will of trying, of risking something. Second: the combination of "welding" and "women" is possible, of course, but, to be honest, it is not verry often seen. So: stand out, be proud of what you are trying to carry out. You can be proud of yourself, Stu can do also, so: everything is fine. Keep practicing ! A tipp: try with straight pieces of metal first. A 90° weld is easier to do for a beginner than a round tube. Doin TIG you learn speed, distance and all the adjustments on the machine easier with 90° welds than instantly want to do tube welding. This is the "next step". Good luck and best regards from Berlin, Germany
I live in Cambridge just down the Road I see the college everyday for last 34 years have a good time in Cambridge pal 👍 👍💯💯💯💯 love your channel and seabird
Good job pal if you had time you shod of went to Duxford museum just of the M11 good place to go and there’s a lot of pubs in Cambridge as well we could’ve went to glad you’re home and work commences on seabird and Marina is a good welder. Good job love your channel.👍👍
The first thing I learned was puddle management. Get a scrap and keep the puddle at the same size without effort. After that practice moving the puddle in a line and after that dipping the rod. There are gloves for this kind of welding that are thinner/softer material so you can feed the rod with your fingers a bit at a time instead of by moving your arm. Your first effort was quite good and of course women make excellent welders and did quite a bit of fabrication for ww2. Now my teacher would say oh, nice - now break it to see how good the weld is. So sad when you get your first nice weld and show it off only to have to destroy it! The blobs on the inside mean you likely got good material penetration which also means it is probably an ok weld.
Hey I basically know how to mig weld TIG welding is a lot harder than MIG welding so you're better than I am awesome job try MIG welding first but if you can TIG weld that good you are a going to be a good welder LOL
Try to find some soft leather gloves like Riggers use. Those thick heavy gloves make it so much harder to feel what you are doing. If you are just tacking up gloves are optional. Watch out for wind blowing away your gas
Well DONE 💡👌
I Love to Love these Guys ☝️♥️✌️🌍🙏
Thank you so much.
We are glad you enjoy.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Marina:
Tig or Mig welding are not easy (at all!) It is quite impressive to see the results of your first welding!!
Go Girl!!
💥👊🏻💥
Be proud Marina. TIG welding is difficult to learn. Many people who can Stick or MIG weld struggle with TIG welding.
Cheers Eric
well done guys. rock on toward sailing on the sea tee hee a poet not.
Good job for your first time welding!
Thanks! 👍
Trying to learn something new is fun.
Cheers for watching 🙂
You had to go there really!!!
Well done grasshopper! 😊
Thanks 👍

Brilliant Marina, a welding pro
It's pretty impressive.
Hopefully, we'll have a go together.
I think I'll learn a thing or two.

Fine job for your first go at a TIG I have one tried it a few times you did WAYYYYY BETTER
That is very good for a first try. This metal tubing is the hardest to weld.
I know!
So annoying 🙄
A professional in the making.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Marina next time show us before you grind the weld 😂😂😂😂😂😂
That was mentioned.
Hopefully, next time, the welds are worth showing.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Good looking glass repairs there
TIG welding is not the easiest to start with when trying to learn to weld. but you did ok for your first time. 😎💚💙👍👍🍺🍺🍻🥂

Great job Marina, Stu obviously rightly proud of you. Stu, having a big P bracket isn’t all it’s cracked up to be
well for whats its worth you have tig welded more then me...keep practicing and you might have a new side income welding other boat projects
As long as we can do our little projects, we'll be happy.

Wow Marina! I admire you for just picking up that welder and laying down a weld! Maybe you can teach all of us one day:)
You can do it!
Marina is super handy. She is teaching me so much.
She has a lot of patience and stamina.
Cheers for watching 🙂

That was a fine looking first weld... much better than most... ps. don't weld on wood,, you can easily catch it on fire....
I've always wanted to learn to weld - a very useful skill to have. Well done Marina.
You can do it!
With so many little welds, it's a skill that needs to be learnt.
Cheers for watching 🙂
Watching you doing whatever you are doing is never boring, every little step brings you closer to your goal.
That's a really good weld for your first weld. You'll will get better with practice. Take care, Terry.
Stu you got to avoid prop envy, your little one will still give satisfaction 😂😂😂
Seabird is starting to look very proud again. Your love will save her. love your progress and the videos.
Thank you!
Sometime we feel a bit overwhelmed with so many little projects on the go.
We really need to tie up the loose ends.

When welding two pieces of tube end to end sit them in a lenght of angle profile for perfect alignment.
Marina you have to Learn Sometime if you do it for the first time it is cool pal👍👍
Marina done good with him off site seeing in England. I just got it heard the name Marina before, you must be a little older to get it Stingray.
Impressive first weld.
I do think you put too much of the stick in. But I think for your first TIG weld that was fantastic.
The finger one is definitely the best for getting into the hole Marina 😊
Look at you Marina, welding and sanding away like a pro ♥️

Try to find some soft leather gloves like Riggers use. Those thick heavy gloves make it so much harder to feel what you are doing. If you are just tacking up gloves are optional. Watch out for wind blowing away your gas
