Good story, typical of its era, well-played out by a competent cast. Always nice to see Carroll O'Connor in a non-Archie Bunker role, showing the versatility of the actor. Little could he, or we, know of the great fame awaiting him a few years later. One forgets that George Hamilton actually could act & that he actually appeared in mainstream network programs, not just tabloid fodder, an always perfectly tanned & coiffed playboy, "famous for being famous", as the saying went, an image for which he eventually opted. I've never seen Margaret O'Brien at this stage of her life. She was most attractive, reminding me a little of Elizabeth Taylor here. Jack Weston apparently played more serious roles than I recall, as it seems he usually portrayed weak, simpleton-type characters, though usually likeable, or for light comedy relief. Anyway, this was an enjoyable episode, despite the overall poor film quality, which I know can't be helped. Audio quite good, so that's a point in its favor.
O'Brien was so cute as a girl. I think she was the girl in the Atticus movie. I think she called him Atticus even after the movie was over. She was still alive about 6 years ago.
The child who played Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird film is Mary Badham. She also was in the Natalie Wood, Robt. Redford film, This Property is Condemned (i recommend!). Margaret O'Brien was a child actor, too of course but, not in the "Atticus" film. ✨
I feel bad for the spinster girl. I suppose she was too short to reliably produce tall sons, so was not very desirable to marry. It's a shame that you have to look out for such things. You should be able to have kids of any size and they should have equal chances, but that's not how it works. The very successful guys, 90% of them look like game show hosts. Patrick Bateman. Don Draper. Just walk down Wall st. at lunchtime and see for yourself. Not very many Raj Rajaratnams. But many Patrick Batemans.
