LSU TIGERS DC SEARCH | Why Missouri DC Blake Baker would be a PERFECT fit under Brian Kelly

  • LSU Tigers head coach Brian Kelly announced Wednesday afternoon that defensive coordinator Matt House would not return to LSU in 2024 after two years as the defensive coordinator in Baton Rouge. House led the second-to-worst defense in the SEC that gave up an average of over 460 yards per game. So who will be the next defensive play caller for the purple and gold?
It is widely reported that the leading contender is Missouri Tigers defensive coordinator Blake Baker. Baker helped Missouri's defense improve from the 113th ranked unit in 2021 to the 25th ranked defense in 2023, a key cog in the Tigers' eleven win season including a Cotton Bowl victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes. Plus, Baker has a history in Louisiana. The Houston native played college football at Tulane, started his coaching career at Louisiana Tech, and even found his way to Baton Rouge as the linebackers coach in the 2021 season. Baker was not retained by Kelly when he took over as head coach for the 2022 season.
However, Baker is not the only candidate whose name is connected to LSU. If not Baker, then who? Could LSU's next DC be just a few hours down the road at a divisional opponent? Or could it even be a coach that is currently in house?

Lance Guidry from Miami, makes a lot of sense. He's from Louisiana, coached & recruited in Louisiana.

@@shermanbrown7841 I’m not saying that Baker wouldn’t be a good fit, but at the same time, Guidry is from Louisiana, pointing to the fact that he could relate to the local recruits better. That’s all.

@@jedolivier2688Baker can too. Baker's wife is from here and went to LSU on a sports scholarship. He also played at Tulane for 5 years. He was born in Houston and coached in Texas high school. Was a GA at Texas with with Mac Brown for 4 years. He was a safety coach, LB, coach, and DC at LA Tech for 4 years. Bro has ties in east Texas, North Louisiana and South Louisiana. You can not get any more localized in LSU's recruiting stomping grounds than Houston, Clear Springs, Austin, Ruston, New Orleans, and everything in-between.

I hope they get Baker. He is from Texas and his wife is an LSU alum and LSU will pay him more money. All 3 good reasons to move to Baton Rouge.

Missouri to LSU is undoubtedly an upgrade. Plus consider the personal aspect of it - his wife is from Louisiana and she may want to come back home.

Hopefully Baker takes the high road here and shows good character and class, that he can't be bought. The money may be better, but the idea that he was kicked to the curb by LSU should prove to Baker that LSU is only interested in LSUs best interests and not coach Baker and his family's best interests. Credit Mizzou for being proactive and offering the extension. MIZ!
