The drill designer of this show was Greg Poklacki. He wrote all or part of the Cavaliers drill in 1991,1992, 1995, and 1996. He was Spring's designer for a few years in the early 1990's.
My. Son was in this band, Jeremy Childers, trumpet, it still causes shivers up and down my spine to watch them perform. Well deserved National Championship.
Wow...pulling off Hindemith (no discernible intonation or phrasing problems, too), a DCI-level drill, and doing it 15 years ago. Congratulations, and thanks for posting this...still trying to find my socks.
My mom preformed state finals and won with this show her sophomore year. She has a solo in colorguard. She broke her toe during prelims for state and had a 103 degree fever and mono during the performances
Does Greg Poklacki still write? What do you think of Hebron HS? They seem link where Spring would have matured to if Watson was still at the helm. link ruclips.net/video/bE2-h_cWVhE/видео.html
@@m176-hp4sy I dont know if Greg writes still. I lost touch with him a few years back. I agree that Hebron seems to have a similar approach to Spring updated of course for changes in the activity.
We won with a 96.55, which at the time was the highest score ever given. We also won Outstanding Music and Outstanding General Effect. It'd be great to other shows on here too!
I was one of the drum majors during this show (and did the bass clarinet solo at the beginning of the 2nd movement). This was one of the most challenging shows Spring had ever done and executed well. Yes, not every set hit perfectly, but pretty damn close enough most of the time. The blood, sweat, and tears (not just a cliche, btw), that everyone put into this show and the heart to succeed was epic. Althoug very unorthodox at most times, our directors demanded the higest calibre of us (which i
this was the best show all-time for almost 30 years!!! Still amazing show. Similar design to this show, no? Gavorkna Fanfare: ruclips.net/video/r3HkTSbkeDU/видео.html
@Ipwnatbassforaliving Yeah I marched in the show in Grand Nationals this year (or last year since its 2012) and we got 13th place, a point and a half away from finals. But it was still the best feeling ever after marching that show, and knowing that we're 13th in the nation.
Thanks for watching! The solos were amplified. This video is from the hi-cam version so you can watch the drill the whole time. The multi-cam shows the soloists and pans around to different shots.
I'm a current member of this band, and this upcoming season we're going to Grand Nats and we're playing Symphonic Metamorphosis again. This year we placed 9th at State so I can't wait for this year!
I was skeptical about it being the best Spring High marching show ever...I went to Klein Oak, and I've seen some damn good Spring High marching shows, and that was amazing. In 1993? And putting Hindemith on field? GAHHHHHH
My brother Russell McGuire was in the pit this year, his freshman year. I was in band from 1989 to 1992, marching the bass drum in 1991 and 1992. I would love to find our Grand Nationals performance from 1991 (we totally got screwed in our sixth place finish).
you have to admit that the music wasn't as amazing as it could've been, but oh my god the drill is unmatchable! i wish my marching band could do that...
I love the double helix move that Michael Gaines put in this show. He did it here 2 years before he added it to the famous Cavaliers 1995 'Planets' show. It's right at the 3:00 minute mark.
@Ipwnatbassforaliving It's no guarantee any band will win Grand Nats. In fact, it's no guarantee any band will win any contest at all. Don't worry so much about winning and just enjoy the music and marching and innovation. The competition is fun but don't get too caught up in it because it kills the fun. When I marched, my band never made BOA finals. Best we ever did was 14th but it was my favorite show. We were overjoyed when we made it to state. That was the accomplishment.
Very cool show! Fast-paced drill, a bit dirty, but still awesome. And the music was incredible. Being so huge, the band has a great brass sound without being gross. Looks like they pulled off a very difficult show!
At the time, it was the best score ever. It has since been beaten score-wise. I haven't checked up on my BOA scores lately but if I'm not mistaken, Lassiter still holds the record with 97.55 from back in 1998. I don't have time to check all the regional score records but I think Churchill has that one from 1997 in Waco with a 97.
wow! well done! I'm not familiar with any of the music, or the school, but that was very entertaining and captivating all the way through. I was waiting for a company front, and it came out of nowhere in the last number. Very tight. Wondering if the solos in the beginning of the second number were amplified. Overall, amazing show!
Also, if you're not familiar with the activity of marching bands and drum corps, I highly recommend checking out DCI(Drum Corps International) videos. They have way more amazing drill with company fronts and designs as well as music.
@TheDrumline09: you should have seen the double helix rehearsals for the first couple of months of drill. People crashing into each other and falling with scraped knees and elbows. It was.. Well.. Tragic. Lol.
@jkmj33 Haha. He's it's not be best. They are really, really good though. They're in my region, so we see them every year. Their football team sucks, but the band is one of the best in the state, if the not the nation.
Agreed with a previous post, this drill(especially 1st song) is a mess. None of the sets hit on time or in form. I have to assume the judges gave them a huge amount of credit for a hard show music wise and extremely hard drill for the time. However, I'd much rather see a crisp band with easier drill hitting sets together and in time. Being near perfection is much harder to accomplish than sloppy hard drill.
Nathon Morris To say that anything was "a mess" about this show is just absolutely ridiculous. The individual demand for each performer was insane, and I'm not alone in that thought category. Nothing is ever perfect, but the drill and music was amazing and the execution is why this program has lasted the test of time.
27+ years later and I still get chills watching it. Absolutely loved being a part of this. Some of my best memories.
sick show!

Hey Mitch! You helped my alma mater Westfield with their visual book/execution back in 1990, no?
@@m176-hp4sy Yes. I spent the last two weeks of the season with Westfield and went to Grand Nationals with them.

Perhaps, it's just me, but why does this drill look harder than most high school drills today? Call me crazy.
My mom preformed state finals and won with this show her sophomore year. She has a solo in colorguard. She broke her toe during prelims for state and had a 103 degree fever and mono during the performances
Wow! That’s impressive.
Who's your mom? I was drum major for this show and I would have been just a year older. Tell your mom Corey says hi whoever she is:)
I'm Mitch Rogers and I consulted with Spring that year but the designer was Greg Poklacki.

my god, this has to be one of the best musical performances by a hs MARCHING band.
Yep, that was the year we wore pink. That was the year we did movements from the Gayne ballet, Lezghinka, and Russian Christmas Music.
Hello my fellow bass drum leader :) Corey here. I know we have plenty of other social media platforms but I just came across this old video post.
We won with a 96.55, which at the time was the highest score ever given. We also won Outstanding Music and Outstanding General Effect. It'd be great to other shows on here too!
My dad won this
It's still lurking around. One day you'll hear about it again...

the marching is soooo clean...
@TubaMaverick They won... I remember seeing this live after we performed.. it was UNREAL!
TIGHT!!!! AMAZING especially for high school kids - precision drills and some pretty difficult pieces - did BOTH justice -- very very impressive
Greg Poklacki wrote the 1985 Planets show.
Amazing drill, utterly amazing.
ill give them a 10 amazing
that DNA drill was sooo cool!!!
@Ipwnatbassforaliving Yeah I marched in the show in Grand Nationals this year (or last year since its 2012) and we got 13th place, a point and a half away from finals. But it was still the best feeling ever after marching that show, and knowing that we're 13th in the nation.
6 people dislike??? they must not be in marching band or appreciate music:) amazingness:)
They got 1st place at the Bands of America Grand National Championships.
Nice job, We were the greatest! Great Green Marching Machine '76 - '80
Percussion/Bassoon
Wooo!! Spring Band!! c/o '08!!
Thanks for watching! The solos were amplified. This video is from the hi-cam version so you can watch the drill the whole time. The multi-cam shows the soloists and pans around to different shots.
wow I can't believe the jriada is still around.. lol talk about old school. I havent been on those boards in years.
Great music, and great drill
Classic marching band sound

yes 1995
20yrs ago. Wow
Awesome drill. I loved this show!
As a nitpick item, Avon HS (of IN) now has the GN score record with a 97.75 in 2008.
Best show ever IMHO is Plymouth-Canton 99.
you have to admit that the music wasn't as amazing as it could've been, but oh my god the drill is unmatchable! i wish my marching band could do that...

Greg Poklacki wrote the 93 Spring show AND the 85 Cavaliers show. He wrote the helix drill.
@TheDrumline09 The director at Spring was on the Cavaliers staff. Call this a test run to see how to write the drill and how to execute it.
@Ipwnatbassforaliving It's no guarantee any band will win Grand Nats. In fact, it's no guarantee any band will win any contest at all. Oh the triangles. Steve Brubaker was quite the drill designer :)
Greg Poklacki wrote this drill. Steve had passed away a year before.
wow thats freaking awsome!! i've always wanted to do the DNA move lol
Very cool show! Fast-paced drill, a bit dirty, but still awesome. And the music was incredible. Being so huge, the band has a great brass sound without being gross. Looks like they pulled off a very difficult show!
holy shit did they really do the double helix formation before the cavaliers 3:06
umm yeah tht was the most crazy intense show i have ever seen. the drill was sooooo amazing. who wrote it? gaines?
the drill is so 90s Cavaliers!
Well this certainly looks like Michael Gaines drill.

imho the best show ever is Lassiter '02
dang
this is good
like ridiculous.
I wish marching band as a whole was still like this, without the props and stuff.
Who were the directors for this?
Bill Watson, Diane Burton, and Don Meyers
wow! ive never seen the drill from this before, only heard about the DNA helix thing, but this was legit :D
Is this considered the best high school show ever or are there others that are also legend?
they're really good; however, there is no way this is the BEST SHOW ever. Show is about entertainment.
Unfortunately, its scored out of one hundred.
actually i think ld bell beat that school in semifinals last year so ld bell has the highest school, but i could be wrong
@TheDrumline09: you should have seen the double helix rehearsals for the first couple of months of drill. People crashing into each other and falling with scraped knees and elbows. It was.. Well.. Tragic. Lol.
@TheDrumline09 I was surprised too! I thought the Cavies invented it.
Odd. I guess Gaines took Poklacki's double helix move and used it in his "Planets" show.
Did Mark Sylvester write tis drill?
LD Bell 2001
LD Bell 2002
LD Bell 2005
Westfield 1994
Westfield 1995
Marian Catholic 2002
Marian Catholic 2000
PCEP 1999
Lassiter 1998
etc.
ps im an idiot i meant to say marched
Very nice! This is the first time a Texas band won BOA, right?
Yes. First time a Texas band won grand Nationals. I believe Westfield got second place in the late 80s, but don't quote me on that.
how can you watch this drill and say it's boring? If you knew the piece and composer better you would know this is not boring music
Man, I sure do love turtles.
4:21 Tri-Force FTW!
whatever happened to the drum drill? I'm old! haha!
Hopefully Spring makes BOA finals this year(im in it btw)
You mean the 1995? That's the one I'm talking about and I've been told it was Gaines, but I'll believe you if you tell me otherwise.
what place were they?
Carl Trammel they won. :)
@jkmj33 Haha. He's it's not be best. They are really, really good though. They're in my region, so we see them every year. Their football team sucks, but the band is one of the best in the state, if the not the nation.
I don't know if I would say it is the best, however, for a show that really uses very little props this is amazing, and is certainly one of the best.
@TubaMaverick
1st

this show is amazing but its kind of sad how people who marching in this show 14 years have to come on here and say how great they were
ahh cavies copied!!! the DNA thing was in the cavies show in 95
No, it is not.
Fantastic musical performance. Shame about the visual package. Yuck. :) Westfield 1995 kills this in all categories. (No, I'm not from TX.)
